And this: "The only real protection against a gun is another gun." is one of the most ridiculous things I have heard.

I agree. On a serious note, I've always been scared to get a gun. First of all because I have small children in the house and would be terrified that they'd get their hands on it somehow.

I was also married to a very abusive man for 10 years so I was always scared he'd end up shooting me with it and even now, I don't think I'd actually be able to pull the trigger on another person anyway (unless they were actively trying to harm one of my kids!) but I'm sure I'd hesitate long enough for them to take it away from me and kill me with it.....

I dont think that it is an option for everyone because not everyone agrees with owning a gun for that purpose......and it is very much a big responsibility........unfortunately we live a long ways from the city and there is so many people that try to steal and break into homes in the country for theft or other reasons they also know how long it takes to get an officer out here.........we have been broken into before while we were in the home and thanks of God all we had to do was tell them to get out and there was not any problem....well there was a problem but not one that a gun was needed for....its is never the first option just to shoot someone .........it is the very last option anyone should use...and they really need to be in danger of loosing their life before they ever think about using it.......and one should be able to tell the difference ........... :)

Unfortunately not everyone is as responsible as you are and so the easy accessibility of guns to complete morons is the problem here.

I detest guns, have never been in the same room as one and I never plan on it.

Just yesterday morning, a guy got shot 5 times right outside my apartment. I was at work, but my wife was pretty terrified. It happened at about 2AM.

I'd like to teach my wife how to handle a gun, but she won't have it. It's scary, really. The only real protection against a gun is another gun.

No the answer is less guns...less availability and NO HANDING OUT FREE FCUKING GUNS WITH CARS!

Enforcement of gun crimes are reactive in nature. I could buy a gun for 30 bucks down the street. But the police won't even flash their lights until that gun is unloaded into someone. Until the cops find an effective way to get the guns away from the meth junkies, then "less guns" is not the answer. Now I'm not talking about the Wild West here, but I think citizens have a right to protect their homes and families. Within reason of course.

Less illegal gun sales however is the answer. Small time drug dealers are always targeted by cops. What about small time gun dealers?

There should be harsher punishments for illegal gun ownership and for dealing illegal guns. The police would also need to devote more manpower to preventing these guns from even making it onto the black market to begin with.

More cops? Please, as if we don't have enough of those undereducated dumb-as-bricks armed-to-the-teeth chip-on-their-shoulders maniacs running around.

We don't need more cops. Their mission just needs to change a bit.

-Get rid of those useless drug task forces. Pot is not killing people.

-Get rid of the those stupid prostitution sting teams. If an adult wants to buy sex from another adult, who gives a sh#t? Seriously.

If the police did half as many gun purchase stings as they did drug/prostitution stings, I think it would be logical to assume that street gun crimes would go down.

I can respect your personal "feelings" about guns but are you really suggesting that there be an intelligence test for gun ownership?

My handgun locked in a quick open combination safe next to my bed isn't a problem. Guns in the hands of complete morons and criminals IS a problem. Far more guns are owned by responsible people than criminals and as long as that is true, we have a chance against those morons with guns.

One of the really nice things about The Constitution of the United States of America is that its citizens are not subject to the emotional reactions of other citizens. Instead, we are subject to the law.

Anybody know the latest statistics on car-jackings in Texas since the declared open season on them by considering automobiles an extension of the citizen's domicile with regard to storing and using firearms? You see the would-be carjacker is now aware the automobile owner might be armed and authorized to shoot them, the same as if they broke into their house.

If there is ever anything that should require a test, I'd say gun ownership fits the bill! You have to take a series of tests to be licensed to drive a car... why not to own a gun?

Eh, just because someone passes a driving test, doesn't mean that they aren't an idiot on the roads.

An intelligence test for gun ownership would be yet another colossal waste of tax money.

You have to take tests to get a diploma, certificate or degree as well.

You wouldn't think it's ridiculous if you had a gun in your face, now would'ya?

If I had a gun in a my face, I'd probably be too scared to move, let alone remember where my gun is and the combination to the safe it would be in.

Maybe if you had a gun, were comfortable and proficient in its use, guns would cease to intimidate you so and you'd actually find that you do, in fact, possess the ability to remember where your gun is and the combination to the safe.....

I am not intimidated by a gun. I refuse to be intimidated enough by "the possibility of coming in contact with a bad guy with a gun" that I need to "protect" myself with one.

Oh, and I've had a stroke, so remembering things during a stressful time usually doesn't work for me, comfortable or not.
