Well, it may be because it's of no interest to me, but maybe the passport thread? It seems that thread might be better as a wiki entry. It's some pretty static info, rather than say medical reviews.

Also as the old police certs fade from memory, and the HPV is not a shock, there may come a time it's not needed as a sticky either

Yeah - I must say those are the two in my mind as well - but the passport one has been used recently so maybe not? I was quite happy to let the HPV one go - people coming up for interviews now should have had the info long enough for it to not be a total shock

And the passport one could be a wiki - hadn't thought of that

I'd ditch the passport one. A lot of the info at the beginning is out of date anyway, and you need to hunt to find the up-to-date stuff. A wiki entry would be good -- Poiteen, you're the wiki woman -- I say wiki away!

Well, it looks like Glyn and I will be going with Upakweship. We got a quote for £585 door to door for 55 cubic feet worth of boxes and fishing gear. We got another quote for the same amount of things from the ones that advertise on here for £985.00 . So they are coming next Thursday...I will be so glad when that is done.

This is going to sound really weird, but how much is 55 cubic feet in dimensions? I'm trying to figure mine out!!

Ok I worked mine out so scrap that - it's just over 2ft x 2.5ft x 4ft - so by my reckoning that is just over 20cuft... That's not so bad I feel really happy now!

Barry called for quotes from 3 of the shipping companies listed in this thread...Excess Baggage, Alllied Pickfords, and Upak We Ship....for his 19 boxes appr. 98 cuft, he received quotes of £855 from excess baggage, £750 from Allied and £650 from Upak we ship...that is door to door they are providing packing for some odd sized pieces also....his quote is good for 3 months...

So it's U Pak We Ship for us!

They just picked up our things earlier today. The man was a bit rough looking but he was nice enough. He actually thought our quote was for £500.00 and I was too honest and said...no £585.00. Glyn was ready to kick me. Next to go is the cats and ourselves on Wednesday. I am so excited...but so tired and stressed at the same time.

Our price to supply boxes measuring 64x38x42 cm with a weight limit of 40kilos per carton on a door to door service £190 for the 1st carton and £50 each additional plus collection from Bristol £40.

Yeah - it looks like around £580 for the lot from my guestimation but from what I have seen here it seems a tad on the pricey side... part of me is wishing I had arranged for quotes earlier though... >< Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I reckon I have no more than 30 cubic feet - I've budgeted for £500 but what do you all reckon sounds like a good price for that?

well I'm just shipping boxes, not furniture or anything, but seven seas and all freight were the cheapest for me.

All freight had a great deal, 8 boxes for 250 quid, but I'm packing myself, and picking up at the port. I think the deal was for london only, but even before their deal they were the cheapest for me - door to port. They didn't do door to door in the LA area. The cheapest was seven seas door to door.

Ugh! We have no idea where to start as far as this shipping thing goes. This has turned out to be the most stressful part of the whole K-1 process for us.

Since I am here in the US, I of course can be of little help to him as far as packing and making arrangements go. Neither of us has ever made a big move, and don't know anyone who has, so we really have no clue what to do. It would be nice to have some knowledge here, to 'gently encourage' him in the right direction.

He is so stressed out that he refuses to make any definite plans for when he will arrive. Of course, my employer needs to know SOON when I need to have off for his arrival, the wedding, the so-called honeymoon etc. He has had this whole past week off from work, and as far as I can tell, all he did was sort through and shred one pile of papers. At this rate, our K-1, which will have not even received yet, will expire before he is anywhere near packed (I kid you not).

So at the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, let me clarify... he needs to get his belongings sorted and pre-packed, as to estimate the amount and size to be shipped (in # of boxes and cu. feet?) before contacting a shipping agent for estimates? How far in advance of his move date should he do this?

Should he contact one now, so that he can get boxes from them? Or do you use your own boxes and stuff?

What are some of the things he should look for in a shipping agent?

Since I live very near the NYC airports, is shipping to port a good option to save money, or is it not worth the hassle?

Customs? Shipping dates? Regulations? I have no clue.

If someone could just outline what needs to happen in the shipping process, that would be a HUGE help.

Sometimes we joke that it would be easier if his flat just burned down instead.
