I'm crossing the border tomorrow for the first time since applying. I don't expect any problems, though I wonder if they can see the K1 application when they scan my passport.... I don't call him my fiance and I don't have a ring. I will just stick with "visiting my boyfriend" and see what happens.

and Yay!! A visit!!

No, they won't see the K1 application when they scan your passport, hockeygal, so try not to worry. Just be honest and you'll be fine.

I never thought twice about doing the same thing hockeygal....but now, in retrospect, I did a lot of things wrong. I would cross, and overstay... say I was coming back monday, but call in work and go back tuesday or wednesday etc.

I said the same thing...visiting my b/f...had trouble one time, after the visa interview, i accidently referred to his mother as my mother-in-law in reference to a box of tapes i had in the car they were curious about...i was givng them to her. So I got hauled in and questioned and they went through my purse, wallet...every compartment, asked me questions about every scrap of paper in there sheesh. In the end the guy walked me out to the car and searched it, then asked me about my fiance visa ...I explained tht I had just had the interview yesterday, still had the papers in the car to prove it...he asked where the ring was...i told him, my fiance is holding out until I get approved :P He said congrats, you were approved LOL

I was on my way, but I had to do a LOT of talking to explain that I wasnt already married and tht I was not going to be married for few months.

Most times when I crossed they glanced at my license and waved me through, one time, with my kids in the car, the guy didnt even look at my license. I have never used my passport to cross

I am coming up on my first trip back using my AP.....I had a nightmare last nite that I went there andd forgot to bring the papers!!!!!

I never had any stress crossing until I came here and found out about bans and stuff!!!!

I wouldn't be so quick to say that, I do believe it does show up on the screen.....

Funnily enough, the most I have ever gotten questioned at a POE was when I flew to Boston for a weekend trip a month and a half after we filed K-1. Not sure if it had anything to do with it or not.

According to Zyggy who is a USA Customs dude, they do see your application in their system!! But can a trust a guy with a nick "Zyggy?" lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I tried to get a good look at the screen to see what comes up, but it all happened really quickly.

Overall, nothing different from any other crossing. I said I was off to visit my boyfriend, they asked me the usual questions, I told them where I worked and they let me through.

I've crossed the border a gajillion times in my life with no problem, but throw in a K visa and I get nervous!

i was hoping that maybe you guys could answer a few questions for me.

i want to go visit my husband in july for about 2-3 weeks.

i will be driving down with my family (it is only an 8 hour drive) and then my husband will be bringing me back to canada 2-3 weeks after that.

we are currently waiting for my I-129f for my k-3 visa to go through.

the thing is, i don't have a job at the time or a lease to show them that i will be returning to canada.

if i show them my noa receipts will this be enough for them?

it is obvious that i have to come back to canada for my interview anyways.

will this be alright?

or totally illegal?

i will be honest with them.

oh, and how long will they let you visit while a visa is pending?

thanks.

Shanny, I believe Canadians can stay in the US for up to 6 months without a visa.

I don't see why you would have a problem visiting your husband for 2 - 3 weeks, however if you have no job or lease or anything else to prove you will be returning, you MAY have a problem if the agents ask you questions.

The only time I had a problem at the border was when I had a one way ticket to the USA, as my boyfriend was going to be driving me back to Canada. The agent gave me a really hard time about it. Of course, I was crossing by bus, not car. They don't always ask detailed questions to people in cars. It is possible you will all say you are going on holiday for a couple of weeks, and that will be that.

If I were you, I'd bring the NOA slips, to at least show you ARE going through the proper channels if it comes to that. Personally, I'd let someone else do the talking about how you are all going on holiday, and not volunteer the married-to-an-American info.

Maybe someone else has some better advice!
