Doesn't look bad, although for not much more you can buy a better quality digital camera that also takes video with sound. My Sony Cybershot takes decent quality video and with a 2GB memory card, I can take something like 2 hrs. of video on it. :)

hmm, I have a fugi fine pix and the video quality is ok but it kind of comes out like the DXG video wideawake posted.... i payed over 200 bucks for the camera...

Sony uses MPEG compression - which is a very good format. I'm not sure what other digital cameras use, but that's the big difference when it comes to video quality.

if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for the flip? the only video camera we have now is on my digital camera but the quality is really bad...

never mind.. just checked out the link you posted.. looks like around $100 bucks for the basic one.. not bad...

I was going to ask you if you actually listened to me! One drawback is the fact that the Flip doesn't have a memory card, so what you buy is what you get. This one has 30 minutes, the 1 hour version was $150. The software is built in and it is YouTube and AOL video friendly. It basically does the uploading for you. I wish I would have had this when I went to Viet Nam. I am trying to grab screen shots from the DXG now for USCIS and it is basically a nightmare. This Flips software allows you to grab pics. So much easier for a poor boy from West Virginia. This fancy technology scares and fascinates me both at the same time!

Yeah, the Sony Cybershot is a very nice alround camera and the videos are coming out pretty good as well.

The DXG is MPEG. I'm not sure about the Flip yet. My memory card may be FUBAR on the DXG. I'll have my brother take a look at it next time I'm home. I feel like they tried to cram to much into the DXG. If I want an MP3 player, or whatever , I'll buy one

Holy cow! Mark, take it back and buy a Sony Cybershot. I just bought a 2GB memory card for it for $40 - and it can store 2 hrs. of video. I'm not sure where you bought it, but most places have a 30 day return policy. I bought my Sony at Circuit City 2 yrs. ago for under $300 and I think they've gone down quite a bit. I'd even consider another brand, just look at the video compression it uses - MPEG is superior to most other compression formats.

Digital Cameras uses CCD lens. Atleast most of them uses it. Video Camera uses CMOS. The difference, CCD lens is higher quality, but slower than CMOS. However, CCD lens are more expensive to make because it needs a new way of manufacturing them versus CMOS. Whereas CMOS is cheaper to make because it uses the same process as a typical semiconductor. CMOS also is faster.

Due to the advance in digital imaging, faster CCD lens, it's making digital cameras cheaper. I think the Canon Rebel XTi uses CMOS. Canon is probably the one with the best CMOS technology. No wonder their SLR is cheap.

CCD - absorbs more color (white light)

CMOS - absorbs less light the faster it responds

I'm sort of on a budget here! I only bought this because while I am Touring I see some pretty cool things. That's how it always starts though! Just like crack.

There's some great websites that sell refurbished digital cameras. I understand being on a budget, but you also want a reliable camera.

Here's just an example:

I was reading up on this one and it says it saves video in AVI format... it also seems to have gotten some not very good reviews....

It's good to check out the reviews...I haven't kept up with them lately. But in any case, more than likely, there are good quality refurbished digital cameras that are considerably cheaper...also places like Circuit City offer some pretty good prices.

Speaking of Circuit City - I went into the same store yesterday where I bought my Toshiba laptop last week and noticed the price had dropped by about $100. I went to their Customer Service Desk, gave them my credit card and they ended up crediting my account $130! :)
