Once you file with a copy of your green card only, they will send you out an NOA1 (usually unless you're TSC!) and this will state you have applied and your gc is extended for another year whilst they process.

If you don't get the NOA1 before your gc expires, you have to make an infopass appt and get an I-151 (#?) stamp in your passport that does the same thing - which could be a problem if you are not in the country - maybe? I guess you could go to the American consulate wherever you are, but not sure on this.

Anyway, I would cross that bridge when you get to it as the NOA1 will probably arrive in time.

By the way - whatever you do don't send in the Removal beofre 90 days, or they will return it to you!

They will not give you the stamp while you have a valid greencard... if your greencard does not expire until Feb 2009 and you are planing on returning to the US in Dec/Jan then you will not have any issues with getting back in... you will still have a valid greencard...

You can mail your removal package at anytime durring the 90 day window so there is nothing to stop you filing it once you return to the US after your trip...

My passport (needed to enter other countries) is in my maiden name, and my tickets are booked in my maiden name to match the passport.

My green card (needed to re-enter the USA) is in my married name.

My copy of my marriage certificate is carried in case I am asked why there is a discrepancy between the two.

going back to us-airline will ask for GC or any other proof-permission to enter us. (at least, I was always asked)

so, valid GC is must (or stamp or NOA-I guess). I understand that you are returning before your GC gets expired-you should be fine. Why don't you prepare package before you leave and ask somebody to mail it on/after Nov28 while you are in Romania (so, you would not loose time)? Or you can always mail it upon return.

Why don't add another " also known name" on your passport, then you don't have to carry your marriage certificate to proof

that the maiden name and the current name are the same person. That is what I have done.
