I was talking with my coworker about wills, estates and funeral planning. The topic of music at the funeral came up.

What would be your song?

Mine: spirit in the sky.

Mostly because I ain't a JC believer, and my friends and family would get a kick out of the irony of it playing at my funeral. Plus I'd really hope that they'd sing along.

I have to be honest, I really don't care. It's not like I would hear it! Ultimately, a funeral is for the living not the deceased. So I think the family of the deceased should choose whatever is appropriate in their eyes.

Disagree. One should leave a lasting memory in the minds of those that care about you, that is a reflection of you or how you want to be remembered.

If you leave that to others, they could play some disco or something worse....

Ashes to Ashes by Jill Barber.

Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Fauré.

Song for Athene by Sir John Tavener.

And the hymn The King of Love My Shepherd Is.

(I had a major life-threatening event happen in my life, so I tend to think about this stuff sometimes. The music list has changed over time.)

William, I am curious, do you disagree with who picks the music or that a funeral is for the living?

Wow interesting choices. I never really thought that in 20 years my choice would likely change, but you're right. It probably will.

I agree that typically funerals are for the living so the actual event itself is of little consequence to the deceased. However, sometimes the best thing for families and loved ones is knowing what your final wishes are. They can place a great deal of meaning on carrying out your last wishes. Those of course may not be the minutest detail of what songs to play.

My aunt and grandma argued for 2 hours about whether to play Amazing Grace at my grandfathers funeral. Personally, I think he would have liked a little Hank Williams. And maybe, he just didn't care.

I disagree with who picks the music. Clearly, funerals are for the living, yet the music played in memory of the deceased should/could be selected in advance (by the one who will meet that fate).

Personally, I think it's a good idea to choose in advance, but I probably won't do it.

I would hope that if music is played on my behalf, that someone would know my favorites.

No question about it, they're going to have to play "I just dropped in."

Hell...I think I'm gonna put it in my will that they have to watch the whole movie at my funeral. Best. Funeral. EVAR.

As I discover different music, that's when the list changes. ;)

I think this is pretty much "the list" -- it has my favourite hymn, a piece of music from my wedding, an amazing song about letting go (Jill Barber is brilliant), and a choral piece that touched me to the core when I heard it played at Princess Diana's funeral (and the words are beautiful). It represents my faith and my eclectic tastes in music.

But, knowing me, this may change in 6 months!

I can see where it could be a problem for some families, so I could side with you too. It really depends on the family in question.
