Hello!

My fiance has his K1 interview scheduled for April 1st and hopefully he'll be coming from England around the middle of April.

I'm just wondering, does anyone have any advice about health insurance or automobile insurance options for him?

Also, I was wondering, does anyone know how he would go about getting a drivers license? When does he have to take a driver's test?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

For car insurance I used Progressive, it cost a fair amount (900 dollars for 6 months insurance for an oldish Isuzu Rodeo 4x4), but at least they insure foreign drivers. I (should, if i pass..) be getting my california license on 2nd April, so i'll call them and see what they say. the next 6 months had better be cheaper or i'll be shopping away.

Health insurance: if you google "immigrant insurance" you'll get loads of hits. Mine cost about 100 bucks a months for three months. I don't know how well it would actually work in practise, i only tend to go to the doctors about once a decade. I only got insurance at all in case something catastrophic happened - like i was in a car crash or something.

As far as driver license, check out the dmv website it should give you the information you need. My auto insurance is with State Farm which is who my husband is with, so I would say you can shop around for that as well as your medical.

My husband had to wait for his green card to get a DL in St. Louis. He had to then take the written and driving parts of the test.

We have only one car, so I added Andre to my state farm insurance as a second driver. It did not cost us any additional.

I added him to my health insurance at work. He was covered retroactive to the date we married.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

You need to call your local DMV office since they all vary from state to state. In Colorado my husband had to have a valid SS# and documentation he was a legal immigrant in the US. Once he had both he got his DL. Then I added him to my GEICO car insurance. And then I added him to my work health insurance.

These are all good things not only because coverage is automatic, but also because it gives you another piece of evidence of you two having a bona fide marrige when it comes time to remove conditions.

If I already have an Ontario driver's licence, can't I just exchange that for a Michigan one? (where I'm moving) - Or do I have to take the tests, etc. all over again? I've had my licence for 11 years...

My guess is that you can just go in and get a new one from Michigan but each DMV office is different. You need to call them to find out.

For us finding insurance has been just as much trouble as getting my visa. My husband's car insurance was about $45 per month with GMAC. I've had a Danish license for years but once I got my NC DL they wanted to carry the rate up to $180 per month!!!!!! Progressive, Statefarm, Nationwide, Geico and State Beaureu all wanted $130-180 per month (and that's the down to the bare minimum coverage). The high rates are because they won't recognize my Danish license so they qualify me as an inexperienced driver!! It's was only Direct Insurance (over the phone - not at the office) who would acknowledge me as exprience.....so we currently pay $60 and some change per month with them.

Health insurance........impossible to get on our income. Thinking about becomming a CNA so I can get it through work.
