The General Election is essentially tied no matter who the Democrats nominate.

It’s McCain 45% Obama 44% and McCain 46% Clinton 44% (see recent daily results).

In both match-ups, McCain enjoys more unified support from Republicans than his opponents do from Democrats.

A Rasmussen Reports look at the race suggests that John McCain may be the luckiest man on the planet since Ringo Starr.

Both McCain and Starr were in the right place at the right time and everything broke their way. The question now is will McCain’s luck last until November.

Thanks, Hillary, for your efforts to split the democratic party. Of course, this is JUST the primary, so McCain has far from won ANYthing at the moment....

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Seeing that the Dems are still busy campaigning amongst themselves and seeing that the Clintons don't care who moves into the White House if it isn't them, McCain very well should be ahead in the polls now. It's a long road to November, though. Bit early for the Republicans to break out the champagne.

Yes, at this particular point in time, the polls are running neck and neck between McCain and Clinton or Obama.

But look at the economy. By November, the recession will have deepened and especially if Hillary is the democratic nominee, McCain will be no match to Hillary on the economy issue.

Don't count on it. In a recession the dems solution is to raise taxes. Right now getting into people pockets will not be a popular choice. McCain will talk about lowering taxes or at least making the tax cuts permanent. That will resonate with the voters.

Don't count on that, McCain voted against the tax cuts in the first place.

But if your going to spend goverment money to stimulate the economy, it has to come from somewhere. We pretty much used our credit card up on the Iraq war.

Taking more of what people have less of isn't going to fly. It's true that he didn't like the tax cuts to start with but he has since acknowledged that they worked and were a good idea. At least in the campaign he will call for the continuation of the tax cuts.

I'd say the economy is probably one of McCain's weaknesses - he's not in sync with Republicans on key economic issues, though he does support free trade

I really don't think the economy will be an issue for long. By the time the election comes around I think it will have picked back up. This downturn came about 6 months to early to help the dems.

So do I. The economic downturn is just starting. I don't think it is going to turn around this year.
