am i missing something? when did english stop being the primary language in this country? i know that sounds harsh but i feel if you live in a country for good.. no matter what country... you need to learn that country's language and adapt.. not make everyone else adapt to you
uh....what happened to being bi-lingual?

Nothing. What does that have to do with anything? I'm bi-lingual. So is my wife. Now, this may come as a shock to you but even though we're both bi-lingual, neither one of us speaks Spanish. But since we both live here, we do both speak English. As should each and every immigrant to this country. I'd propose that nobody is even called an immigrant until one demonstrates a desire to integrate and, thus, speaks English.

Oh, and yes, had we moved to Spain or (most of) Latin America, we'd be speaking Spanish. In a manner that would be reflective of our respect for our host country.

What a novel concept, eh? ;)

aye chico....you're taking this stuff way to seriously. My point was that the post was assuming that this song is done in Spanish because they don't speak English. I know plenty of people from Latin America that are here that speak both and could appreciate both. For the people that come here and don't speak English....or are still learning, then what is the problem with hearing the words of our national anthem in their language?

I swear some people are never happy.

So, you're saying we need the National Anthem in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Swahili, Afrikaans, Portugese, Norwegian and whatnot? I just think that there's no need to mess with any National Anthem. Is Mexico coming up with an English version of theirs? I didn't think so.

I did not say they we needed our national anthem in Spanish.......they came up with one and who cares? Like I said, it's not like they are petitioning the president to have the Spanish version be the official one.....aye. And who cares what Mexico does anyway? That's a different country with a different population makeup.

If some Japanese people wanted to do our national anthem in Japanese, then more power to you! I'd actually be interested to hear what that sounds like.....it could be cool!

I think it sucks big time. These illegals protest waving the Mexican flag and now prevert our anthem. It is really pissing me off. This is America! Not Mexico.

Context, merc. Context.

If someone came up with a translation of a national anthem just for the freaken heck of it, I couldn't care less. Yet, when that is done while mostly Spanish speaking illegals try to portray themselves as victims (which they are not), immigrants (which they are not), parts of the society (which they are not) and as innocents (which they are also not) while demanding not only that our laws be changed to let them do whatever the heck they please but also that any and all services, government and otherwise, in this country of ours be offered in Spanish and while flying Mexican flags over our schools, then I do care. Coming up with a Spanish version of the Star Spangled Banner in this context is quite disturbing as the underlying message is anything but a desire and willingness to integrate.

I don't see the difference between this and Jimi Hendrix's wailing guitar.....

That was considered disrespectful back then as well.

It's a free country. Artistic expression. Don't take it too seriously.

love that Hendrix version too.....

Our freedoms and rights are guaranteed to citizens natural and naturalized. Also, your rights are guaranteed by the constitution as long as they do not infringe on your neighbors rights. So the only way you can change a law is to vote, which is guaranteed only to citizens of the US. The illegal immigrants have no power to change laws except by intimidating those of us who can vote.

Yes, Jimmy Hendrixs' version of the Star Spangled Banner was considered controversial and disrespectful (for some people) but as a US citizen he had the right to express himself. If the illegal immigrants wants these rights then the law states the proper way to do it.

How many of us have been standing in lines at Walmarts, groceries stores behind an immigrant probably illegal (Mexican or others etc etc) sending money home? If they can do this then they could use this money to become legal instead of taking the cheap and easy way by trying to force the government to recognize them. If we could do this and take on the hardship financially and otherwise so can they.

Just my 2 cents. :)

I just couldn't care less. So what? The United States is bigger than its anthem and its flag. It really shouldn't matter, in the same way that it doesn't matter that a whole bunch of those American Flags that people like to hang outside their houses and plaster on their cars are made in....China!!

If a country is that insecure that an anthem sung in another language upsets it well, it's got bigger problems that the language of that anthem.

We have bigger and more important problems in this country to deal with than someones choice to sing the star spangled banner in spanish. It's just a convenient and utterly ridiculous subject upon which people can vent their insecurities.
