Fear is a motivator, but to create fear you have to have at least some remotely plausible link for people to relate to. I really can't see his middle name being such a link. However, you have a point, there are some pretty nutty voters out there!

I do know one person (a registered Republican actually - so they probably wouldn't vote for BO anyway) tell me that the main reason they object to BO was because of that (smear) story from a while back that he wouldn't put his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance.

Its hard to know what to say to that... but it does seem that there are people out there who are prepared to base their voting decision largely on trivial appearances.

Still I can't believe this silly "story" is still being pushed - though within that section of the media its not surprising. Apparently not content with using man's name as an indirect smear (by reminding people of some pretty wild rumours on the internet) - they want to make some spurious free speech argument out of it: "Why is he ashamed of his own name?", "why can't we say his real name? He's playing the race card".

They want to make out that their motives are innocent and genuine, when they are everything but. They're also the one's playing the race/religion card - but will only do so obliquely - because propagating an innuendo is easier and less outrageous than actually saying what they really mean.
