Does he keep his UK passport after receiving a greencard?

My fiance's UK passport expires in 2009. If we are married and he gets his greencard, does he keep the British Passport or would he apply for an American one?

He wants to know if he should renew his passport before he moves here.

Green Card is not US citizenship. He cannot apply for a US passport.

After he spent 3 years as a greencard holder he can apply for US citizenship. Ones he becomes citizen he can apply for US passport. In the meantime he better renew his UK passport if he wants to travel internationally.

He would need to renew his UK passport.... you can only obtain a US passport once you're a US citizen.

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

You should check this out to make sure, but I think you can still renew your UK passport from outside the country. I'm pretty sure about that.

UK citizenship = UK passport

11/2004 - Met in Brazil

09/2006 - Apply for K1

03/2007 - K1 approved

04/2007 - Apply for AOS & EAD

07/2007 - EAD approved

01/2008 - Conditional Residency approved

11/2009 - Apply to remove conditions

02/2010 - Permanent Residency approved

11/2010 - Apply for Citizenship

03/2011 - Citizenship approved

07/2011 - Moved back to Brazil

I am not sure but he should be able to apply for new UK passport once in the US by contacting the UK Embassy / consulate. The best would be for him to contact passport services here in the UK, they should be able to give the info
