Quick question. I was wondering if when I activate my visa do I have to travel with ALL of my possessions? The reason why I ask is because my husband and I wanted to fly upon activation will most of my clothing and then maybe July 1st long weekend we can drive back to Canada and pick up the rest of my things. I also may be bringing over my moms car ( a gift from my parents) so I am hoping all of this will not pose as a problem.

what type of visa will you have when you cross?

You don't need to bring everything with you when you first activate your visa, but going back to get it will depend on what type of visa you have and if travel is allowed without getting advance parole (AP) first.

To import the car to the US, check the Customs and Border Patrol website for info on that. They won't let you just drive across with it, there's documentation and stuff you need first.

I belive she has a cr-1, so she should be fine!!

With regards to the car, which sounds like you are keeping it, ensure it meets emission guidelines. You need a certificate from the make of the automobile. Info: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import...anada07032.html

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

no prob!! Nissan faxed me what I required for free. Some do charge $$$. I ended up selling my car prior to leaving! Best of luck

Apparently you don't need to travel with everything. Dave is FINALLY (bout damn time) activating his visa on Sunday. (he has an IR-1). You just need a list of what you will be declaring. he is keeping his car (he wanted to wait till his ride was a year old). Honda is sending him the letter for free

Filled out I-129F 2/22/02

I-130 was approved 10/22/02

Was out of work for 6 months :( Immigration process was at a stand still thanks to this

Got his EAD and SSN in February 2003

Job market sucked, he couldn't get a job in the US so no AOS

9/8/04 :( DH moved back to Canada K-3 expired

End of 2004, now have job and salary to satisfy affadavit of support (YAY!)

in the wee hours of 6/1 Fire was lit under our butts! (Don't ask!) :(

Visa bill mailed on 6/3

Visa bill received on 6/7

I-864 stuff was sent via overnight mail on 6/14!

Information packet and docs generated 6/20/05

I rec'd the DS-230 packet on 7/26

Sent ds-230 via express mail 8/13

9/15/05 CASE COMPLETED!!!!!!!

10/6/05 Case sent to consulate

10/27/05 Medical Exam ...was marked incomplete

11/10/05 New Medical Exam letter issued! YAY!

11/15/05 Interview--APPROVED BABY!

4/30/06 Activated IR-1 Visa at the Pacific Hwy Crossing in Blaine, WA

5/12/06 Dave Received the Welcome to the US letter...

5/31 Green Card arrived in the mail! Also got 2 more welcome letters!

Dave's company has transferred him 7/6!

Started his position in Bay Area, CA on 8/14!

is this true for k-1 visa peeps also? I was told I had to bring 'everything' but there was 1 box of stuff we couldnt fit in the trailer or truck for love nor money and my rocking chair is still at my mothers....it was a gift when I had my first born, dont really want to part with it, but I thought I would have to either abandon it or pay duty on whatever I had to leave behind....

I do have to go back and get my on who will be activating his visa in july, so I could always add it into his things, but do 15 yer old boys really own rocking chairs and quilt racks??? heh

11/01/2008 : Biometrics for both of us

01/??/2009 : 10 Year Green Cards!!!

you can have things shipped or go back and get them duty free up to one year after you move to the US.

Yes, you need a customs form, I believe it is form 3299. check the Customs and Border Patrol website.

If you are going to the US ahead of your things, whoever is shipping/bringing your things after will need a copy of your visa and I-94 as well as the customs document. If there is a whole lotta stuff, you may also be asked for a basic inventory of contents.
