When does one file for a ssn? When Does it have to be done?.. b4 we get married? I believe they need it for the marriage license. Lil confused on that..haha I'm head of myself but i want to be prepared for it when we get to that step..

Before or after you get married usually works. Some states only require an SSN if you can provide one. You do have to apply for your SSN before the expiration of the I-94, otherwise you will have to wait until you have an EAD or GC to apply for an SSN.

Check out the marriage license requirements for your State. Some require them, some do not. You'll need to wait about two weeks before applying for the SSN. That's about how long it takes to get the beneficiary's information into the SAVE system. I got mine after we were married. But most get theirs before marriage because a lot of the SSA offices don't quite know what to do with K-1 visa holders. For your marriage license call and ask if you can get a waiver for the SSN. In Louisiana, we got a waiver for the SSN and the 72hr wait period, it took an extra 5-10 minutes and we were married the same day. My hubby applied for his SSN about a week later, and recieved in in the mail within the next week or 2.

In FL you don't need a SSN - you can use your passport number.

Marriage license Laws in the state of Iowa, here is what you need to bring with you, and what you need to know about the Iowa marriage laws before filling out the Iowa marriage license form.

In order to get married, you need to apply and receive a marriage license. This is the document in your state that allows you to officially tie the knot under the law. The rules for acquiring your marriage license varies from state to state, so you should check with your city's marriage bureau at your clerk of court's office to find out what your local rules are.

You'll typically need to apply for your marriage license at least one month before your wedding ceremony. You'll traditionally need to send in your birth certificates, tax information, and other official documents. You don't, however, want to apply for your marriage license too early. In some states, the licenses do expire, if you don't get married within a few months.

When you apply for your license, you'll not only need a proof of identification and age, will need to provide any information about previous marriages, and will need to pay a nominal fee. You will also need to have a witness when you sign the application, so plan on bringing your maid of honor or best man with you. The bride will need to know what her married name will be before she signs the marriage certificate. You'll have to write that name on the application.

And, believe it or not, just because you have your marriage license sent to you in the mail does not mean you are officially married. You need to have a justice of the peace or a religious clergyman sign the document. On your wedding day, you'll give your chaplain your marriage license, then after the ceremony, he'll sign it and send it to the proper government agency for validation.

I would get it about 2 weeks after you enter the US and before you get married. A lot of people in the AOS forum have experienced problems trying to get one after they were married as the SSA doesn't always seem to understand the policy. Especially if you are a woman and planning on changing your name - get it before you get married in your maiden name and then go back after marriage to change it to new name.
