Asterisk in NOA Receipt Application Number?

We just received my wife's NOA Receipt for her Naturalization application and the application number starts out with ESC but then has an asterisk (*)immediately following and then the rest of her numbers after that. I found this odd so i went online to check her case status using that number and it gives me an error message saying the case cannot be found and to recheck that the correct number was entered. Does anyone else have an asterisk in their application number? What does it mean (if anything)?

K1 Process

6-28-2004 Submitted I-129F Petition for Alien Fiancee

7-9-2004 Received NOA1 (receipt notice)

7-28-2004 Received NOA2 (approval notice)

8-2-2004 Received NVC notice saying my petition was being processed and would be delivered to the US Embassy in Manila within a week.

8-16-2004 Called US Embassy in Manila to verify they had received my petition for my fiancee and inquire as to approx how long before she receives her K1 packet. Nice lady informed me they received my petition on July 30th and that my fiancee would be receiving her packet in about 1 week and that her K1 interview date at the embassy was October 22nd.

8-27-2004 My fiancee Ann received her K1 packet

9-16-2004 Sent my I-134 Affadavit of Support (and supporting documents/evidence) via FedEx to my fiancee. Was delayed 1 day because Mail Boxes Etc. didn't tell me I needed to declare a value for the photos I was sending as additional evidence.

9-28-2004 Ann's medical exam at St. Luke's (Day 1)

9-29-2004 Ann's medical exam at St. Luke's (Day 2)

10-19-2004 I fly back to the Philippines to attend Ann's K1 interview with her.

10-20-2004 I arrive in the Philippines

10-22-2004 Ann's K1 interview at the US Embassy...she's APPROVED!!!

10-30-2004 We arrive back in Vermont, USA to begin our new life together.

11-20-2004 We got MARRIED (reception on January 8th)!!!

AOS and EAD process

11-12-2004 Applied for Ann's SSN

11-22-2004 Received Ann's SSN

11-24-2004 Applied to change Ann's name on her SS card to her new married name.

11-30-2004 Sent Ann's completed Adjustment of Status and Employment Authorization documents to the Vermont Service Center via UPS (they received it on 12-01-2004).

12-04-2004 Received Ann's new SS card with her new married name on it.

12-09-2004 Ann's AOS and EAD packet was returned to us because we submitted it to the wrong place (Vermont Service Center).

12-13-2004 Resubmitted Ann's AOS and EAD packet to the correct place (the address of the Vermont Sub Office per the letter we received explaining why it had been returned the first time).

12-27-2004 Received NOA receipt forms for Ann's AOS and EAD.

12-30-2004 Got Ann's Biometrics and Fingerprinting done at the local sub office.

2-1-2005 Received Ann's EAD (Employment Authorization).

2-14-2005 Received NOA telling us Ann's interview for adjustment of status is scheduled for March 14th.

3-14-2005 Ann's Adjustment of Status interview at Vermont Sub-Office...she's APPROVED!!! Her Conditional Permanent Resident (green) card will arrive in 5 - 8 days.

3-21-2005 Received Ann's Conditional Permanent Resident (green) card and NOA welcoming her to the United States of America.

01/02/2008 - Fingerprinting Done

02/11/2008 - NOA3 Interview Notice Received - April 10th, 2008

04/10/2008 - Interview Done - APPROVED

08/15/2008 - Oath Letter Received

Were you ever told as to why your number has an asterisk? Did you also get a message saying that your case cannot be retrieved and to check to make sure you entered the correct case number?

Mine has one too but I didn't have any problems checking the status in the USCIS site. Maybe yours was not entered in the system or is delayed. I am sure you will be able to check on it soon.

11.13.07: Infopass Appt to inquire about I-751 status - Letter to Ombudsman sent.

12.08.07: Letter from Ombudsman received. Formal inquiry initiated. I should hear back from USCIS within 45 days.

01.05.08: Response from USCIS received: Required Review still in process. Contacted Congresswoman office.

Approved per Congresswoman's office response given in March 08.

Same here. It's probably just some delays from their part (go figure...) to enter or update your case status online.

U.S. CITIZEN SINCE MAY 8TH 2008

NATURALIZATION

28th july 2007 - N-400 mailed to VSC

(exactly on the 90th day mark...applications NOT returned although some scared me into thinking they could have!)

30th july 2007 - N-400 delivered to VSC

11th august 2007 - Delivery Confirmation receipt received

17th september 2007 - Money Order (FINALLY!) cashed

9th november 2007 - NOA! (notification period given 180 days)

21th november 2007 - Biometrics appointment letter

18th december 2007 - Biometrics appointment in Baltimore, MD completed

29th march 2008 - FINALLY received letter with interview date!

8th may 2008 H 8:40 AM - Interview in Baltimore-APPROVED!

8th may 2008 H 3:00 pm (yes same day, crazy!) Oath Ceremony in Baltimore

24th may 2008 - US Passport application mailed off

6th june 2008 - US Passport received in the mail!!!

No worries about *. When you use USCIS Case Status Search web page: https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/caseStatusSearchDisplay.do just put in whole number, together with asterix.

Even web page says you need to use it:

To view the status of a case, please enter the corresponding application receipt number. The 13-character application receipt number can be found on application notices you have received from the USCIS. It begins with three letters such as (EAC, WAC, LIN, or SRC). Dashes ("-") should be omitted when entering a receipt number. However, all other characters, including asterisks ("*"), can be included if listed on your notice as part of the receipt number. See the FAQs for additional information on this system.

I put mine is as LIN*xxxxxxxxx . If you don't use * you will get error message that your case can't be found.

I called USCIS this morning and the lady I spoke with said that all naturalization application numbers have an asterisk. As for not being able to check the case status online she said that because of the deluge of applications that they have fallen behind as far as updating the web sites database and to give it a week and check again and if we still don't have any luck to call back.

K1 Process

09/17/09 - email AOS bill received and paid online, ds3032 received and returned

09/21/09 - AOS bill status "PAID", FedExed out AOS, 09/24/09 delivered to NVC

09/28/09 - AVR:AOS acknowledged

10/02/09 - 3032 was acknol. by NVC, paid IV Bill online

10/05/09 - emails: 1 pm -RFE for 3032, 3 pm - IV bill, 5 pm - status PAID

10/09/09 - ds230 delivered to NVC at 9am

10/14/09 - AVR: Checklist response was received

10/20/09 - login failed! - between 5 pm and 9 pm PST, at 5 pm it was still working

10/21/09 - case complete! (AVR updated after 10 pm) = total NVC 37 days

10/28/09 - interview date email came at 6.30 pm, no AVR changes yet

10/30/09 - AVR: "Case sent to embassy on Oct 29" = total 4 months from delivery of i130 to USCIS

11/02/09 - Medical

11/20/09 - Interview - PASSED!!!

Hi, I just received my NOA today as well and I also have an asterisk *. It also didn't find a case number on the USCIS website when I checked. Like TruLoveFound said (cute nickname btw :) ) let's hope it's just because of them not updating fast enough.. I will keep on checking every few days.

By the way, did you receive a notification for biometrics appointment? Mine only talks about a $0.00 balance and that I should expect notification about the date and place of the interview within 365 (!?) days!

Congrats on your speedy interview letter...I see you have a lot of post, but what was your processing time listed on your letter? less than 90 days??

No, it was 180 days so you may hear from them even sooner! Who knows with USCIS.
