I'm a customer service manager with Walmart and have been for 6 yrs... I have seen it all in Walmart... this week added another thing to the list... My cashier was ringing up her customer... 3 items finished and in the bag... total $7.17 the woman puts the coins on the belt THAT MOVES... and the coins fall into the conveyor belt and are unreachable... < (ignornance #1) but no big deal the cashier tells her no problem forget about the 17cents... The woman starts yelling at the cashier bcz she cant reach them into the hole... so the cashier calls me over...

The lady says this... "YOU need to put a sign up that says the belt moves!" < (ingorance #2) Im SHOCKED! and im like EXCUSE ME ??? not thinking i heard what she said correctly... she said again "YOU need to put a sign up that says the belt at the register moves..." i said NO MAM I DONT... a conveyor belt at walmart is just that.... a BELT that MOVES! then the cashier tells the woman Mam you owe me $7 just forget about the 17cents... the woman screams "WHY is my total $7 for 2 shampoos and eye makeup! I DONT WANT ANYTHING! (ignorance #3)

So, Im like ok mam no problem you go and have a nice day today...

Then she yells again... IM NEVER COMING TO WALMART AGAIN! lol... that was the BEST thing I heard from that womans mouth all day!

Ahhh... Darn Steven I am so sorry Jinky had to put up with yet another ignorant hick on the phone.

This reminds me when I worked back in the day as a loss prevention lead at a well known electronics retailer (the one with the red ball in its logo). I just loved putting jerks like these that insulted my associates based on prejudice in their rightful place... with everything short of a strip search at the door for suspicious retail theft. Nothing illegal at all! Other times I remember hurrying them out of the store into the loving arms of the police dept waiting outside (disorderly conduct and verbal assault).

Next time talk to her about how turning the other cheek at times infuriates the *bleep*-head even more... escalate their stupidity for all to hear.

Anyways, S&J...it really blows....but I think the best course of action is for J to pity these people because they're obviously completely ignorant and quite frankly, socially retarded.

Based on their ignorant behavior, they got what they themselves deserved. Then again, maybe they are incapable of learning a lesson even though in my experience I thing I saw regret in a couple of these racist hicks.

Next time I see a hick being discriminated against I'll make sure to make things right...

No need to "battle." All that is necessary is to read what is written. A hick is a hick is a hick, regardless of what state they're in. I guess racism is not confined to one particular region in this country but all you have to do is google names like Metzger. Where the ignorance is in giving a racist hick a taste of their own medicine is beyond me. You know, people do stand up for others.

I do not meddle in stereotypes- neither is it stereotypical to quote examples of actual events that take place to individuals.

hehe....see jim goad's "redneck manifesto". you're right though, it's odd that such blatant classism and these particular stereotypes are still so socially acceptable. it's just as wrong to do to them as it is anyone else. yet it's hardly recognized when it's done, let alone condemned as it should be.

What I should have stated was that they were just ignorant, racist individuals, thereby avoiding labels and the obvious case of what my associates and myself saw in behavior. Ha ha though, they still got what they deserved.

My wife's been working at Macy's in the Lingerie Dept. and she received a call from a woman looking for a specific size and brand of bra. As she tells the lady that the nearest store that carries the product is out of state, the woman asks her if she is Filipino and then asks her if she knows how to read! Jinky responded with, "I'm sorry?" And the woman then asks again, only spelling the word R-E-A-D. Jinky refered the caller to her manager and then broke down in tears.

I don't understand why people think they have a right to be insulting to people who work in service type jobs. ####### does her nationality have anything to do with the conversation?

Unfortunately, some people are just plain mean and ignorant.

I, too, experience these type of rudeness at work, not by my American co-workers, but 2 of my superiors. They long immigrated here from Pakistan (about 35 years ago, no offense meant, I am just telling my own experience) and they seem to think they are better and wiser than most people here. I work as a scientist in a research facility and sometimes they would openly embarrass me by saying things against me being a Filipina. They said that Filipinas are always scheming, always trying to do sneaky things to their advantage, and that they can't be trusted. Why the eff did they even hire me? If this goes on for too long, my tenure in this company will be cut short. I don't think money is worth all the agony. I should have listened to my gut instinct when they commented, in a panel interview, that "Most Filipinas who go to America either work as nurses or doing nails." Then one corporate lunch, a superior took me aside the parking lot and told me "See.. Years from now you'll progress and be the head of the research dep't., look at her (pointing to a Filipina, apparently an acquaintance of his, standing nearby, with a Burger King uniform and name tag), look how lucky you are. You sure don't to be like the rest of them."

After working my hours, I hurriedly went to my car to leave the company premises and I can't help but cry. I am so pissed. I don't think I can stay in a company with these kind of classless people.

ETA: I am suffering in silence too, and I am at my wits' end.. It will soon be over, I just so hope.

I hope you can find a better opportunity but I think you're right - you'll run into ignorance and bigotry in just about everywhere you go, but at least some places it isn't accepted or tolerated.

As others have posted, the best way to deal with situations and people like this is by not letting it affect you negatively. I know it's easier said than done. However, I have realized that staying polite and adding some humor to the situation takes away from the sense of superiority from the bigots.

Next time, perhaps Jinky can say politely ..."Yes Ma'am. And I can S-P-E-L-L too".

good one I've told my wife she'll probably encounter a situation like this. the best thing to do is turn it around on the person. like say when a person flips you off, smile and wave and say "have a nice day.."

if you retaliate in a situation like this, the customer will definately change the story on how it started...
