At what stage of the CR-1 do we file for the DS-230 to get the SSN

We are waiting for the first thing from the NVC after our I-130 approved. When do we get to file for the DS-230 to get the SSN. Thank you

there is no more ds230, they changed it years ago to the ds260, you will mark that you want to receive your ss card at the address you will list once you enter the country, you won't receive the number while you're in your country, but after you have arrived to the US

I have been told by a fellow filer that half of those applications for SSN on the DS-260 don't actually make it to whoever matters, so you will probably need to apply in the US anyway

Maybe.  After a month or so, you will know.

 

I'm more concerned that the OP is following very old instructions or information.

I see. So when do we get to mark the DS-260? After the NVC?

During the NVC stage.  You will find out if marking it correctly actually gets you an SS card about a month after you enter the US.
