My husband is a 10 year green card holder but his citizenship is for Thailand. If we are traveling to Vienna and Slovakia, what do we need to do?

Edit: Does he really need travel insurance? Can you only get visas from the consulate?

Currently.... they have issued Ice the incorrect GC and we have tried 4 times to fix it. First time they had us send it to the incorrect address. Second time they said we used an expired form, which was the form they gave us. Third time was "oh sorry we lost the last page, can you send it again?." Fourth time is the gov is shut down. Will this ever be corrected in time for Ice to get the permanent GC? Stay tuned to find out. T_T

He needs a Schengen tourist visa, which will allow him to travel to any Schengen country.

Yes of course you need travel insurance. That's usually part of the requirement of the tourist visa.

He needs to apply to Schengen visa at the closest Austrian Consulate if that's your first destination, or the closest Slovakian consulate if that's the first destination. Most likely NYC or DC consulates for you guys. Your current health insurance would work "if and only if" it specifically covers repatriation. believe they pick on this thing. If you don't see this coverage, then purchase a travel insurance online. I had to do this myself in 2006 for a French Schengen despite having health insurance in United States. Not expensive at all, typically $15-20 for a 10-15 day visit but if you go to consulate without this thing, they would tell you go purchase insurance and bring a copy. Last I had Schengen visa was 2014 and I used insuremytrip.com, 10 day trip to Italy cost $17.30 (good thing I don't delete emails, still have a record). Read other items they request on consulate's webpage but they would require airlines and hotel reservations, paystubs, employment verification, bank statements, etc that shows his ties in the United States and if he can cover himself financially while he is traveling.

After the application, they will have his visa ready hopefully same day but no guarantee. Make sure to ask if they could mail it back or if your husband needs to pick it up personally. Italian consulate had my visa ready in a week an I had to personally pick it up. Luckily they have a consulate in Boston, otherwise I would have to made another trip.
