Traveling on AP BEFORE green card interview?

Hi, guys. I was broaching on this topic on a separate thread so I wanted to specifically dedicate a thread to it. Angel012110 had some very helpful suggestions on that other one, and I'd just like to get a little more feedback.

My wife just received the EAD / AP "combo card" today. She wants to return to China to meet with her thesis advisor, submit her thesis and graduate university. We do NOT have any updates on the green card (the I-485), nor have we had a green card interview.

I've been told that if we were to, say, get the green card notification tomorrow for an appointment, the appointment itself might be a month later. So we were wondering, would it be a dangerous risk to have her leave for China this coming week with a return date of four to five weeks (and no more) later?

Even if the green card interview date were to overlap with her stay in China, she can always pay the fee to have her ticket date changed to an earlier time and come back in time.

I've seen many threads asking about traveling on AP *after* the green card interview but haven't found any information on traveling on AP *before* it.

For the record, we do not under any circumstances intend to even consider of rescheduling the green card interview when it comes.
