N-400 with a DUI on record

So I've searched high and low for more information about naturalization cases with a DUI but did not have much luck. I debated for 2 months whether I should apply or wait until the 5 year period passes. I took a chance to not wait and go ahead with the application because I thought a DUI would not necessarily make someone a person without good moral character. Everyone makes mistakes, what's important is what you learnt and have changed for the better from these.

My application was approved in Nov 2015. Now that my journey is over, I think I'd like to share my experience with folks going through the same situation with me, with a hope that you guys can get more information for your own benefits.

A little about my DUI: it happened at the begining of 2013, first and only offense, no accidents, no children involved. My state took this very seriously so I got a DUI charge, license revoked, had to take classes and all. It was def not worth it so please, do not drink and drive! It is dangerous for others around you and it is pricey! Taxi or uber would cost a fraction of the price and fees you'll ever have to pay for attorneys and court in case of a DUI.

My interview experience: I applied in June 2015, got approved in Nov 2015. I got all questions right. The young officer who interviewed me did ask about my DUI but he also showed sympathy as it was my first offense. I came to the interview prepared with a certified court report, 2 affidavits of good moral character from my friend and company colleague who knew me well (one went to the same church with me, the other knew me as a member of RedCross. I also volunteered for blood donation, took part in a drive sober awareness group and registered as an organ donor in my state). I did hand the officer my ssr for his record. It was recommended for approval. He could not approve it right away due to my DUI so his supervisor approved it 3 weeks later.

Myths:

You need an attorney: not necessarily true but you should also consider consulting with one because each state has different regulations.

You need to wait for 5 years: not true

Your probation period has to be over: yes, the officer checked carefully that mine was over.

My advice:

-Be honest, be polite, and definitely make sure you completed your probation before your application.

A hope it helps!

Thank you very much for sharing your story. So many times people seek help here, and then never follow up, causing everyone to assume the worst. Good luck on your passport application, if you haven't already received it.

hi congratulations. was the rest of your application clean, for example 6month or longer trips outside of US and TAX filing?

Were you heavily questioned on your DUI case?

What do you think, how did your affidavits from friend and a colleague helped you support your case?

was the interviewing officer male or female?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! That was very helpful and now I am assembling my documents to apply next month. Did you need to mail certified arrest report as well or only the certified court disposition was enough?
