2nd Ebola case confirmed in U.S.

(CNN) -- A healthcare worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital has tested positive for Ebola after a preliminary test, the state's health agency said.

Confirmatory testing will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

If confirmed by the CDC, the healthcare worker's case would mark the second diagnosis of Ebola ever in the United States.

A health care worker at a Dallas hospital tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test, the Texas Department of State Health Services said in a statement early Sunday.

The health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, who was not identified in the statement, provided care for Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient in the United States, who died last week.

The worker reported a "low grade fever" Friday night and was isolated and referred for testing. The preliminary result was received late Saturday.

"We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, said in the statement. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

Health officials have interviewed the patient and are identifying any contacts or potential exposures.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital has come under scruntiny for its handling of Duncan, who first showed up at the hospital's emergency room late on the evening of Sept. 25, complaining of a fever and severe pain. Although documents show that a nurse recorded early in Duncan's first hospital visit that he recently came to the U.S. from Africa and his temperature reached 103 degrees, he was prescribed antibiotics and told to take Tylenol, then returned to the apartment where he was staying with a Dallas woman and three other people.

Preliminary testing has confirmed that a health-care worker who came in contact with the United States' first Ebola patient has become infected with the virus, the Texas Department of State Health Services has said.

Further testing to confirm the disease will be conducted at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, according to a written statement from the state.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has announced that there will be a news conference at 7:30 a.m. Sunday to discuss the results of testing at the state laboratory in Austin that has confirmed that the worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital has been infected.

"We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

The health-care worker was placed in isolation after reporting a low-grade fever Friday night, and the preliminary test result was received late Saturday.

Health officials are working to identify anyone who has been in contact with the patient. Those people will be monitored for symptoms according to the nature of their exposure to the patient.

Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to contaminated objects. People are not contagious before symptoms develop.

This is just one of what will be many cases of "collateral damage" due to this administration's " Open Borders " policy! It is totally pathetic when you are willing to sacrifice a nation's health just to advance your agenda. There is no way possible our hospital system can cope with this virus if it gets a foothold in the USA. We might have the facilities to treat these cases but we do not have enough of these facilities to treat large numbers of infected patients. It is really stupid to think that we are immune to third world diseases just because we have a good health care system, anyone with a speck of common sense knows that even a race-horse can be run to death! We do not allow rabid animals to be brought into this country, even though we have a rabies vaccine and require pets to be vaccinated, in the fear of causing a rabies outbreak, so why would we allow people with viruses for which NO proven and widely available vaccine exists to enter freely into our country? It is sad state of affairs when more medical information is required to bring a pet into this country from any western country than a visitor from a disease-ridden third world country.

Dr. Aileen Marty tells Fusion what she saw fighting Ebola in Nigeria

The Ebola outbreak continues to spiral out of control. Near the epicenter of the epidemic in West Africa, more than 3,400 people have died and more than 7,000 people have been infected with the virus. Officials are scrambling to contain the outbreak at its source and keep it from spreading.

The World Health Organization is sending doctors to countries where the virus is most prevalent — Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Fusion’s Jorge Ramos spoke to one of the doctors, Dr. Aileen Marty, who recently returned home to Miami after spending 31 days in Nigeria. She says she was surprised what happened when she arrived at Miami International Airport.

“I get to the kiosk…mark the fact that I’ve been in Nigeria and nobody cares, nobody stopped me,” Marty said.

“Not a single test?” Ramos asked her, surprised.

“Nothing,” Marty answered.

Newark Customs Agent: We're Not Prepared for Ebola

A federal U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent who works on the front lines at Newark International Airport says customs officers at the tri-state hub lack appropriate training and equipment to handle potential Ebola cases.

"They are assuring the public everything is being done, but it is not," the agent told NBC 4 New York, adding there are currently no doctors or CDC personnel assigned to the airport for when flights with passengers from West Africa arrive.

The agent's statements come as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new screening and security measures would be implemented this weekend at the five airports, including Newark, that account for 95 percent of travelers from Ebola-ridden countries.

The agent expressed concern such measures had yet to be implemented. The agent says confusion reigned there Saturday when a passenger believed to be Liberian on an arriving flight was vomiting.

NYC Airports Prepare for New Ebola Screening Process

The plane went to the gate and most passengers were allowed to enter the customs hall, the agent said. Federal officials took the sick passenger and a companion to a hospital, where they were evaluated. It was determined the sick passenger showed symptoms consistent with a minor, treatable condition, not Ebola. The companion was asymptomatic.

The scare was real, however, the agent said.

"A panic ensued," according to the agent. Airport managers went on the public address system and asked the passengers to separate themselves because they were mixed in with passengers from other flights who had not been exposed to the vomiting passenger, the agent said.

In cases of a low-level bomb scare, the plane is parked away from the terminal, the agent said. That wasn't the case with the sick passenger's flight, which landed amid intensifying global fears over Ebola.

On Wednesday, the first patient diagnosed with Ebola in the United States died at a hospital in Dallas, Texas. Another patient from the U.S. was transported to a Dallas hospital the same day.

Sen. Chuck Schumer has said it is past time better protocols be implemented at the five airports -- Newark and John F. Kennedy International Airport among them -- that account for 95 percent of travelers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and New Guinea to the United States.

Shortly after NBC 4 New York spoke with Schumer, the CDC announced new measures would be implemented at Newark, JFK and the other three airports, which include, Dulles International Airport in Virginia, Chicago O'Hare International Airport in Illinois and Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.

About 150 passengers from the three infected countries arrive at those airports each day, according to the CDC. The new measures call for enhanced screening with targeted questions, temperature-taking and getting contact information from travelers in the event the CDC needs to reach them. Passengers who have fevers or report contact with Ebola patients in West Africa will be further interviewed and additional action will be taken when appropriate, the agency said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more personnel will be in place at airports, but it will still be the custom border agents on the front line looking for sick passengers. On-site CDC public health officers will then further interview potentially sick passengers.

The new measures will be implemented this weekend.

The customs agent who spoke with NBC 4 New York said such measures should have been in place sooner. Passengers from West Africa should also be screened for symptoms at the gateways, well before entering terminals, the agent added.

"It's a simple thing where we just need to focus and take extra precautions," the agent said. "I am speaking out because I care. It's just a matter of doing it."

A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection said agents and officers are trained to look for overt signs of illness, and protocols are in place to try to prevent the spread of Ebola. The spokesman said customs officials are working closely with the CDC to improve screening at the five major hubs for people from West Africa traveling to the U.S.
