Hi Guys, I have a question. It's really for my stepson. My wife, has been a citizen for 3 years, at the time she became citizen he was 17 years old. He has had his GC for atleast 5 years before that. Does that mean he is automatically a citizen?

Note: His father is not a U.S. Citizen or have ever even visited the US.

Thanks in advance.

Basically, apply ! Send off the paperwork with payment, and yer done !

No need to chase down any N400 stuff.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Your choice, just a US passport, or can pay the USCIS 600 bucks for the N-600 where he also gets a certificate, just like his mom. Latter also closes the books with the USCIS.

Why? Passport is sufficient for proving up USCitizenShip.

Good question. We got a US passport for my son a few years ago and felt like that's all the proof that would ever be needed, and maybe it is. But then on the uscis website under frequently asked questions about the n600/coc it talks about how important the n600/coc is for future stuff, so we applied for the n600/coc 3 months ago and have not heard anything at all except for just the receipt letter notice. Frustrating.

Had to petition for the kid during the AOS with the same set of forms for the parent, kid had to show up at the AOS interview and was frightened to death with all those armed guard running around. Was only asked is she was happy to be here, just nodded her head. Then all the proof of who she was with documentation, related to her mom, and permission from her defunct father that didn't give a damn about her to come here.

ROC wasn't that bad, automatically received her ten year card with her mom, didn't ask for anything about her, but did toss in her grade transcripts. If under 18, they automatically become US citizens with their parent, but with out any proof. If your office manager was on the ball, should have told you are to deal with your kid. They already have a complete folder on that kid, but like your ROC, and citizenship, want the same proof again.

If the kid is over 16 years of age, but under 18, a very narrow margin, do not longer require permission from that missing other biological parent for permission to come here. But do if the kid is under 16. Just go to the DOS site for applying for a US passport and read all the instructions and fill out the form. You may have more than one DOS agent in town, we do, one doesn't know anything, other has been doing it for twenty years. But still want the original certificate of citizenship from the parent plus all the paper work that that kid is indeed his/hers.

Not a logical reason in the world they couldn't give that kid a certificate of citizenship at the same time as the parent, but they don't do it that way, charge you another 600 bucks, have to go in with that kid for another interview after waiting at least six months.

May have extra problems if that kid was caught swiping a candy bar, but its okay if they legally charge us hundreds or even thousands of dollars more, because its the law.

Here we go again . . .

an N-600 is needed if a passport cannot be obtained any other way because it's not documented that the applicant applying for a US passport is a US citizen. Only in such a case need the applicant spend $600 on an N-600.

If somebody became a US citizen by act of law, then there's nothing arbitrary about this. Apply for a passport, and the passport is all the proof of citizenship ever needed until the minor joins a black-op operation where he steps behind a foreign dignitary and blows his brains out in the name of the US government who knows nothing about him or the organization.

Good example for an N-600 case: Vietnamese girl gets raped by a G.I. during the Vietnam war and the good soldier then disappears. Twenty years later he is found and brought to justice and his love child now claims US citizenship, and rightfully so. There is no way around an N-600 or N-600K in such a case where double DNA testing will be part of the process.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
