OF SPONSORS AND FINANCIAL AIDS

Hi guys, my fiance works part-time, and has only 2 semesters left. He used to have a college grant which he was able to get because he maintained grades that are no less than 3. Unfortunately, they stopped that program already. However he still has his financial aid.

So my question is... 1) Would it be a plus if I showed proof that my fiance gets his college tuition paid by financial aid?

ADVANTAGE: They'll know that his college is paid for and wont get in the way of our expenses.

DISADVANTAGE: The financial aid is usually given to those with low income so if he has one, they might think that he has low income (they'll find out anyway because of the forms)

We'll get his mom as our co-sponsor though. And my second question is... 2) Up to how many sponsors is allowed for a k1 visa in Manila, Philippines?

I need your help guys!

Just found out that US EMbassy in Manila DOES NOT allow co-sponsors for k1 applicants. what to do??

They will consider a co-sponsor on an individual basis. Considering your fiance is a student might be a plus in that regard.

Thank you. Do you think I should mention that my fiance's college education is being paid for by financial aid?

As Kevin said, that will not help you in any way. The ability to support is what the CO is looking for, get your co-sponsor lined up.

This is one of those cases that is known to be an exception to the general prohibition against using joint sponsors for K visas at the consulate in Manila. The way they describe it is that they'll make an exception if the primary sponsor has a sound reason for not having sufficient current income (being a full-time student is a sound reason), and if the primary sponsor has good prospects for improved income in the near future (graduating from college usually greatly improves your prospects for future income). By contrast, they usually won't accept a joint sponsor if the primary sponsor has fixed income and little chance of improving their income in the future (someone on retirement or disability, for example).

His financial aid will not be considered as qualifying income for an affidavit of support, so there's no point in him listing it. They may ask at the interview how he pays for his college tuition. Just be honest.

There are other couples here in the same situation as you are. Their husbands to be were recent college graduates and therefore no income history yet.

They got their immediate relatives to co-sponsor and they were approved! How his tuition expenses are paid for will have little or no bearing on approval.

What is most important is the co-sponsor you are going to use. Will the co-sponsor meet or exceed the poverty guidelines?

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys. His mom exceeds 125%, yes. Just a question though, up to how many co-sponsors am I allowed to have? We're planning on getting his mom as one. Because she's part of the household. But then his uncle gets paid really good salary. We wanna get him too, except he's not living with them.

I am not sure if there is a limit to how many co-sponsors you can use, but why not just get the uncle to co-sponsor if he is well off?

Our only worry is that his uncle is not an immediate relative (he is his mom's brother), and that he is not part of the household.

You are allowed one joint sponsor.

I agree with JimVaPhuong's post.

However, I have yet to see a K-1 applicant approved in Manila if their petitioner has no income.

If you can't get a K-1 visa (even with a joint sponsor), you could always get married in the Philippines and file for a CR-1 spousal visa. The NVC accepts joint sponsors.

My fiance has a job but he just recently started and only works part-time. I hope they consider that.

I hope it helps too. He'll need to document his earnings with paycheck stubs, and he should provide an employer's letter too.

If I were in your fiancé's shoes, I definitely would attend your interview, and I would make the best financial case possible. I think you'll have a better chance if he can explain to the consular officer how he's going to support you so that you don't become a public charge when you are in the U.S.
