Arrived in GZ the day before the interview, the appointment was at 8:30am. Booked a hotel about 700 meters away from the consulate. In the morning we took Didi (Uber) to the consulate.
They only allow the beneficiary to go in, remember that because when we arrived, there was this couple arguing with security. The guy (citizen) assumed that he would accompany his wife and child inside, but they denied his access. So the wife was crying her heart out complaining about how she didn't know anything about the documents her husband prepared, nor the process and she had a child with her. So definitely have your spouse prepared beforehand.
You can't bring any electronic or bag inside either. Basically, the only items you're allowed to bring are documents and your passport. I recommend depositing your phone and bag outside in many of the stores that offer such service.
After passing security, you are handed queue slips. There are two waiting areas, ... read complete review

They did not ask much questions and did not check additional documents.
some questions they were asking:
Did you get married in Ukraine?
You do not have kids?
How did you meet?
What will you husband do in the US when both of you return?
Why are you applying for IR1 visa only now (!!!we have been married for 10 years) ?
Ok. Your visa is granted.
later I had two issues:
1. they wanted me to mail them my original birth certificate because the translation was made from a photocopy.
2. they put visa in the new passport but I have put data for old passport (all documents were done with the old passport) . I had problem getting my passport back as I had to register for the delivery using the new passport because visa was there, and I did not remember the passport data. Took a while to finally get it.

Path to the Consulate:
My wife and I were both amazed at how quickly and, dare I say, easily, this went for her. We arrived into Guangzhou the day before and stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, which is an easy 10-minute walk across the Flower City square, down Zhu Jiangxi 6th Street, across Huaxia Road, at right to the North Entrance of the Consulate.
Arrival at the Consulate:
The appointment was at 0930 and the instructions said to arrive at that time AT the Consulate. However, there was a long line and we chose to arrive about an hour early. The guard at the gate looked at our appointment letter and allowed my wife entry. I walked back across the street to the R&F Building (with all the life-sized bronze statues of plus-sized women) to the NE corner and sat down in the Starbucks to wait.
After about an hour of waiting in line and once inside the Consulate, there was an inner security scan similar to that in an airport. ... read complete review
