I had my interview this morning and though I was successful, I would not say it was a good experience for me. First of all, it was absolutely freezing outside to the point where strangers were huddling together for warmth, and they do not open those doors until exactly 0730, so dress warmly.

My negative part of the experience was not the interview itself, but the precursor to that where you talk to a person at the counter and they arrange your documents for you. A tip: the document list on the consulate website states you should have copies of your birth certificate and passport. They DON'T mention that they want copies of basically any original document including previous divorce certificates, or documents that have been translated from French to English, for example a birth certificate from the province of Quebec. I had to pay $1 to go to a cashier and have one of my documents copied - more on that later. But just make copies of everything to be on the safe side.

I personally had a wonderful experience at this embassy. I found the officers/staff very personable, polite and friendly. I arrived early and since I had an 8:30am interview the embassy was just opening and there was a line outside. There was a sign regarding cell phones being banned inside and I freaked out a little because I had mine on me. I was prepared to leave it somewhere outside (hotel too far away) because I was NOT missing my interview but they allowed me to just use a locker in the security clearance room that you first enter which was awesome. They gave me a ticket to retrieve my phone after. Very organized, very accommodating.

I waited about 30 minutes to be called up to the initial desk. This was the part of the interview where they just wanted to ensure all your documents were with you and verified my information. I was told to have a seat and waited about another 30 minutes for my actual interview. I walked in finally and found the officer very warm and ... read complete review

For all the nerves that went into this, it was really smooth and anti-climactic (which was welcome!). We showed up at the consulate just before 7:00am for our 7:30am appointment. It was fantastically cold and our early arrival landed us with #1 for the day. It was right around 7:30am that they started letting us into the building - one at a time, but they were moving pretty quickly with this given how cold it was outside. The first person they let in was actually the small child of a couple behind us so that she could sit inside and wait where it was warm, which I thought was a genuinely nice touch. Our passports were checked at the front door and then we were ushered to security and sent through the metal detector. Our car keys were marked for pick up with the guards when we were done. We sat in the basement waiting room while enough people were accumulated to begin sending us upstairs in the elevator. We used this time to get our documents into the order listed on the laminat... read complete review

My fiances interview was scheduled for 9am, we arrived about 8:40. When we first walked in, there were 1-2 security guards and a women (I believe she was also security) sitting at a little podium. She asked to see both our passports (so make sure both of you have them if you attend with!) and too see the sheet with our appointment time on it, then she handed us a laminated sheet with #35 on it and said this is a sheet to follow to put your items in order, she let us through. The next room was security check, you have to take off your coat, empty your pockets, and put anything you are holding into the bin to go through the machine. Then you have to walk through a metal detector, the guard held onto my fiances phone (I left mine back at the place we were staying) and my fitbit, then gave us a coupon ticket with a number on it to retrieve our items afterwards.

We walked down some stairs to an empty room with some counters, we stopped at the counter to put our items in o... read complete review

These reviews always helped me while I was waiting for my own interview. So I thought I should share how the whole process went for me.
My appointment was for 7:30, my fiancé and I arrived at the consulate at 6:55, we had been staying the night at the Marriott right across the road.
It was very cold waiting as they don’t open the door until 7:30, there was one group ahead of us in line, however their appointment was for 8 and they were told to stand aside while all of us who had 7:30 appointments could come in one at a time.
You pass through security first where they took my (beneficiary) passport and applied a sticker to it, they also wanted to see my fiancé’s. Then you take off your coat and purse and go through the metal detector. From there you’re given a laminated sheet of paper with your number and the order your documents need to be in.
After that you’re led into a room with a booth to take passport photos if you ne... read complete review
