Yesterday (May 17, 2018) I had my interview in Omaha for the N-400 and adjudication of my I-751 at 9:20 am.

 

* N400 Interview *

The immigration officer was very friendly and pleasant and I felt at ease. We started by taking an oath certifying that I was going to give truthful answers to the questions asked. I also e-signed two statements certifying that the information I submitted was accurate and truthful. Next, I was asked some basic biographical data: name, address, details of when I got married, where I currently live, and my son's date of birth. Then, I was asked the N-400 questions again and double-checking the answers on the form. 

 

We then did the tests. I read one of three sentences printed on a form. I was then asked to write a sentence which he read out on a second form. 

We then moved on to the civics and history test. 

 

I was asked 6 questions: 

- Who is the Vice President?

- Who makes Laws in the United States?

- What territory did the United States Purchase from France in 1803?

- Why did the colonists revolt against Great Britain?

- How many amendments are there in the US Constitution?

- What is the Highest Court in the Land?

 

Once I answered these he congratulated me and said he was going to approve the application. He did not mention the I-751 so once the N-400 part was done I asked about it.

He said he was satisfied with the evidence I sent in so did not even need to call my wife in! I sent in quite a bit of stuff:

-  joint bank statements

-  birth cert for our son

- beneficiary documents for life insurance showing each other as beneficiaries

- 6-7 photos of us together with the dates varying from 2014 - 2018

- 4 years of tax transcripts from the IRS

- recent utility bills with our names and address

 

So it worked out pretty well and I was approved. He then offered me a slot in the administrative naturalization oath ceremony that was taking place that day.

I decided to go ahead and do that. I thanked him and he gave me an oath appointment letter pre-printed and added my name and a-number in pen. He said the questions on the back needed to be filled in before I went in to take the oath.

 

* Oath Ceremony *

The ceremony was scheduled for 2 pm the same day and I was to be there at 1:45 pm. I arrived with time to spare with my wife and son. My shoes set off the security scanner(!) so they had to do secondary screening but they were real nice about it. I had the form filled out - I was amused by being asked if I had gotten married, divorced, joined the communists or been arrested since the interview... (since 9 that morning?).

 

The lady who was organizing the ceremony asked us to get our Green Card and oath form out and she checked to make sure we had the cards and the form completed properly.

I had two green cards (I changed my legal name in 2016) and an employment authorization card and she commented on how many I had. I explained that I changed my name and she was fine about it.

 

Note: You do have to bring your most recent green card as well as the letter with the questions answered and signed. If you have more than one document issued by USCIS, you need to bring everything they have issued to you as they will take the cards from you before you go in to take the oath.

 

Once she had checked everyone in we were called up in groups of 4 or 5 and given a number. At that point we handed over the green cards. There were 25 in our group.

The participants in the ceremony  were then called into a back room with a projector and seats with a number on the back. We took our seats and the lady spoke to us about what was going to happen and how we would conduct the ceremony.

Then, family and friends were allowed in. They were allowed to take photos but asked to silence the phones.

 

They had a little IT trouble with getting the ceremony videos loaded but they got the issue fixed. 

Once they began the ceremony we stood and the national anthem was played. A few people hummed or sang it quietly.

 

There was a brief speech about what we were about to do. They had us stand a second time and take the oath together, a few words at a time. We were then congratulated on becoming US Citizens.

Two videos were played. The first was a message from President Trump to congratulate us on becoming citizens in which he talked about civic duty and how America's history and culture was now ours, regardless of where we came from.

The second was a video of 'God Bless the USA' by Lee Greenwood. 

 

We were then called up by name and presented with our Certificate of Naturalization by the Director of the Omaha centre. I went up and got my certificate.

I also received a packet with information on registering to vote and some booklets on being a US Citizen, as well as a small US flag.

 

Note: Once you get your naturalization certificate you need to sign it. The lady organizing the ceremony stated that the full legal name needs to be on the certificate - we needed to check it and make sure it is correct. When it is signed it needs to be in BLACK INK using a pen - No markers. The signature needs to be the full legal name in cursive script so it can be read. If the name was incorrect they can fix it before you leave - otherwise you have to file with USCIS to get it replaced and it takes a while.

 

We were offered the chance to take photos, and to get forms for registering to vote - and N-600 forms were also made available to apply for citizenship for any children who derived citizenship from the participants in the ceremony.

We were then congratulated and told we were free to go. All in all, it took about an hour. 

 

I am thrilled to have finally completed the process and to have become a US Citizen.

During my I-485 time they requested an affidavit from my Father stating the relationship and my full name. Now for n400 to pass I need to provide birth certificate with my name on it.. or a document saying it doesnt exist. I was born in 1975 in a village in India, no name was given to me until a month later (Indian tradition). Not sure how i am going to get the document needed. Anybody had issues like this?

 

I passed the civics test and everything else without any issue.

The only thing that comes to my mind its opening a topic asking for suggestions,  maybe somebody went through the same situation and can help you.

Thanks! Honestly, I mostly feel relief and some leftover anxiety. Hasn't really sank in yet, I guess. I got to hold my naturalization certificate for all of 20 minutes until I handed it to the passport agency on site, I'll fully exhale once I have a passport in hand.

Just came back from the oath ceremony. A total of 150 new citizens plus a few hundred relatives and friends - very chaotic. Spent over an hour and a half of waiting in the sun before they began checking people in in earnest. Nevertheless, everyone was happy and cheerful.

 

Applied for a passport on the spot, no line there - most people didn't have photos ready.

No reason, was just told she needs to review my file. I haven't even gone outside the U.S. in 18 years, which is when I came to the U.S. 

No criminal history, for the traffic ticket in 08/2016, it was initially filed under reckless driving which is a misdemeanor in VA but was dropped to regular traffic fine due to me never having any other ticket on my record. Absolutely no other criminal record for me.  

I am so sorry for your denial. 

My question is, why you were not able to apply through the 5 year rule if you said you have been in the US for 18 years? So what was your status during the first 13 years of living in the US? That may be a factor.

Also, I don't think you would be deny over applying under the wrong categorie, because the IO can perfectly fix that on the computer. 

I have been here over 6 years, but I applied under the 3 years rule, trough marriage, I thought that was the way to do it since that was the way I became to be a Resident in the first place... the day of my interview the IO told me I applied under the wrong category and then she fixed my application over the computer.

From my heart I wish you an easy and smooth process the next round.

I spent the night in Jacksonville - the interview was at 10:15 a.m. and I did not want to deal with traffic, (possibly) deer, construction or the stress of trying to get there on time.

 

I wore a navy blue suit (blazer and pants) with a white shirt, and a pair of ankle boots. I nixed the belt - did not want to take one off during the security check.

 

After breakfast, I made my way to the USCIS Office and was at the parking lot a little after 9:00 a.m.  I sat in my car and went over the civics questions one more time and then I went in a little after 9:30.  There was a line already, and the couple in front of me had a bunch of items that they were not allowed to bring inside - for example, they had three small children with them and at least two needed to be bottle fed - so they were not allowed to bring in the infant formula in powder form - they could mix it with the water and bring in the bottles with the formula ready for the kids to drink, otherwise it all had to be returned to the car.  The guy had one of those fancy backpacks that allow you to charge your device inside it - the security folks told him he needed to take it back to the car.

 

Once they were finally let through, the security guard stopped me for a second to address the folks behind me and remind them that if they had anything sharp, or anything with cables (like earbuds), or spray bottles (other than an inhaler for folks with asthma), then they have to take those items back to their car.

 

I went in without a hitch.  Had my phone this time, which I put on silent - phones and tablets were allowed in the building as long as they were on silent and/or vibrate.

 

I went to the front desk to check in - was asked for my appointment letter and a form of ID.  Showed him my passport.  After looking at the screen, he told me that since my appointment was for 10:15 I needed to check in around 10:00 a.m.  Sat in the waiting room, shared updates with my husband and my co-workers.  As 10 was starting to roll around, folks were lining up at the desk.  So I made my way up there again.  The man did not ask for my ID anymore, he just printed out my ticket and asked me to take a seat and wait for my number to be called.

 

I sat in the waiting room again - some folks ahead of me were called in - and some folks who were behind me were called in.  I didn't really mind, I figured the officer was in another appointment.

 

A gentleman walked to the door and called my last name but my first name did not sound correct lol  I walked up anyhow, and as we were walking to the door that led to his office, I clarified what my first name was.  He asked how I was, I said I was great - and he mentioned that he was kind of surprised to hear that - most people say they are nervous or something.  We chatted for a bit, I mentioned I had spent the night in Jacksonville for the reasons I mentioned above.  He asked me to take a seat and said he needed to take my picture and scan my left and right index fingers.

 

He introduced himself - the last name is heard was Molinaro.

 

He had asked me for my green card and I explained that it was stolen with my purse a while back, so I had applied for a new one, showed him the I-90 NOA.  There was no declaration on my file, so he had to pull out a paper form, which he filled out with my information (name and A-number) and he explained to me that I must understand if I ever found the green card that it had to be returned to USCIS.  I said yes and he had me sign the form. (I did make an offhand remark that I doubt I would ever see it again lol)

 

He started looking at the screen and then he asked me about my speeding ticket, and if I had documentation to show it was adjudicated - I mentioned the fine was less than $300 and I had opted to go for Basic Driver Improvement school.  I had the paperwork anyhow and showed it to him - he said I could keep it after he read through it.

 

He asked me if I had made any trips outside the US in the last 5 years - I said no, the last time I was out of the country was 2012, and it was only for 6 days.  I showed him both my old and new passports - which showed the stamps and my old visa (K3).

 

Then it was on to the tests.  He gave me the English test first.  I was handed a piece of paper with 3 sentences in it and he asked me to read the first one: Who elects Congress?

 

Then he marked that as correct, and gave me another sheet with blank lines and asked me to write: The people elect Congress.

 

He marked that correct, and asked me if I knew about the history test, I said yes.  So he asked me the following questions:

• Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? My answer: Thomas Jefferson
• Name one state that borders Mexico. My answer: California
• There were 13 original states. Name three. My answers: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia
• Who is the Commander in Chief of the military? My answer: The President
• What is the political party of the President now? My answer: Republican Party
• What are the two major political parties in the United States? My answer: Democratic and Republican

 

From there we went over my application.  In our chat earlier, I had mentioned I just started a new job so we jumped to that portion and he updated my employment information - I gave the start date, name, address and job title of my new (full time) job, and the end date of my last full time job.  I mentioned I had a typo on my previous employers phone number - I had put in the first three digits of my part time job and the last four of my full time job - and told him if they ever called that it would have been bogus.

 

He then proceeded to say that there were some strange questions he needed to ask me.  Basically all the questions from page 11 to 16 on the application form.  I said no where applicable - and because I had said yes to being cited, we went back to the speeding ticket.

 

After a few more minutes, he asked me to look at the tablet in front of me and asked me to check if the information was complete and correct.  I went and signed it.

 

Another screen appeared and it was items 45 to 50 on the form - I signed that as well.

 

Next he handed me the N-652 and I saw where it was marked that I had passed the English and Civics test - and that I was recommended for approval!

 

So he told me to wait for a letter about the oath taking ceremony - and I mentioned I knew there was going to be one in town next week - he looked at me and said that ceremony is fully booked.  

My heart kind of skipped a beat...that meant I could possibly be on the roster for the 4th of July ceremony, which is a big to-do here where I live.  Could not have been happier about the timing!  

 

He congratulated me and as we were walking out the door, he mentioned he was happy that I decided to wear a suit for the interview.  I asked why.  He said a lot of people have been coming in for their interview dressed down, like they were getting ready to go to the beach and he was in the way of their beach time.  The only other things (and I cannot remember when he said this) were: 1) he mentioned that he could see I had a serious side and a great sense of humor, and that I had a positive demeanor; and 2) he mentioned that you (I) should feel good about this accomplishment, you have worked hard (he looked at the screen), and I see you are still working two jobs.  I told him that someday my goal was to have just one job.

 

Now I suppose it is not quite the end of my journey yet...looking forward to the ceremony!

When I went to my interview I also saw people in shorts, tshirts and flip flop sandals and girls with short short dresses and spaghetti strap shirts, wow.

It was a pleasant experience.

I dont know if there is anybody interested in knowing details about my interview, I will let you know. 

I just checked my status online and my oath letter was mailed already! I can't wait to know the day.

I know! I am surprised myself on how fast my case is moving!

I was eligible to file about 3 years ago, I am married to an American Citizen and I arrived to the US almost 7 years ago as a conditional resident, I lifted conditions in 2013.

For my citizenship I applied under the 3 year rule because I thought that if you obtained your green card through marriage, you have to apply through the 3 year rule no matter how many years you've been here.

So I dont know if that is the reason why its moving so fast, or its because my case is very simple, I am married to the same US Citizen, this is my first and only marriage, we have 3 kids together, I am still living in the same address since I moved to the US and I have never been arrested or stopped by the police,  I dont even have traffic tickets. 

Or maybe there is not too many people filing in my area so my local office have early openings.

They probably scheduled your interview. That's what happened to me today! 😄

Yes your daughter can apply for U.S. Passport using your citizenship. I just apply one last Friday for my son. He was able to claim citizenship through my citizenship. However I had to fill up a form stating I have no contact of his dad whereabout since 2 parents has to be present when applying for passport. Yes, her biological father's name is in her birth certificate but I have documentation of her full legal custody... I haven't had contact with him in 10 years, I will just have to get it translated to English.

Right now I am applying for citizenship and I have an 11 year old daughter, she is a green card holder since 2013.

I am planning to send her N-600 right after I become a citizen... So can she apply for a US Passport before having a citizenship certificate? What?

Initially my Estimated Completion Date was October/18 (7 months). But now I had my biometrics done yerterday and it is showing December/18 (9 months)

Hello to all.

I had my biometrics done yesterday, it was super fast... My appointment was at 2pm, I got there by 2:04 and I was out by 2:15.

I went with my husband and my boys (4 years old and 7 months old) the people there were very nice and pleasant with my kids  I was worried about that because I don't have a babysitter.

I am updating the list. 

Also... can somebody tell me what ECD in the list stands for?
