  1. I think the reading level would be critical to your choice of books. If english is a 2cnd language the vocabulary is going to be an issue.

This is why I got my girl a Kindle ebook reader for valentines day. She is fluent in English but there are still words she does not know. It has a built in electronic dictionary. If she is reading and comes across a word she doesn't know, she just needs to press next to the word and a little dictionary will pop up on the top or bottom of the book page. Before, she always had to look it up on her dictionary or mobile.

She can also save any words or sentences and look at them later. Plus the digital ebooks are cheaper and a lot of classics are free. That was the reason I bought myself one also

    Of Mice and Men

by John Steinbeck. This is a must read. All the kids in school read this also.

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

by Laura Hillenbrand. Great book about WW2 in the Pacific. Also explains why we call old people from that era "Greatest Generation".

  2. It's like my wife told me when I told her I had a $10,000 insurance policy. "I not will be kill you for $10,000... you can work for 30 more years and make for me million dollars."

I haven't told any of my family that I have $400k worth of life insurance. I pay under $12/month so why not, company picks up the rest. I can only imagine what would cross their minds if I were late for a family gathering, didn't have my phone on myself when they're trying to call multiple times, etc...

  3. Mu wife is funny that way. Leonid and I will grab her some cheap bunch of flowers for the table but she will just fall head over heels if I bring her home a bag of gladiola and iris bulbs. She'll even go out and dig the holes and plant them.....

"This way we can grow our own flowers and don't have to cut them and have them die at the table."

This is where the Aerogarden units comes in handy. Fresh flowers year round. You harvest them and they keep on growing.

I've got two of the larger ones. In one I grow fresh herbs for soups and the basil for pizza. Other one has lettuce.

  4. Aren't you the one always dropping the Chi-comm threat?

Well, the people aren't commies, their govt are.

He's already been scammed by a filipina, he's going to get eaten alive by a FSU chick. Maybe a Chinese MOB might be better. They won't have any siblings back home calling for $$$. 1 child policy n all

  5. All laptops have built in converters in their power brick. All you need to do is buy the travel heads or buy the detachable cable by itself.

Almost all desktop computers are ready for 110v or 220v also. Just look on the back you and will see a switch for 110v or 220v.

  6. Truth be told, our military is relatively small and we'd stuggle fighting Russia alone. If you added another few MILLION men, scattered through the desert and/or mountains, well, that's just too many for us to fight. Add in alliances with Venezuela, Columbia, etc., and we'd be fighting an uphill battle, both ways, through the snow, carrying our little brother on our back, with no shoes on.

Dude, how many times did you watch Red Dawn

China is the real country we all should be worried about. I'm sure they got a kick out of watching our war on 2 fronts still going on. Exactly how not to do things

Popular Mechanics mag had a cool video of the Russian military. Flying tanks n all.

  7. This is the bus situation in the general area.....

RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) -- AC Transit bus drivers in the East Bay are so concerned about gun violence on one of their routes they want armed security. They say it is so dangerous, they and their passengers worry about making it home alive.

The drivers are relieved Contra Costa sheriff's deputies will be shadowing the 376 during nighttime hours, but wonder if it will last.

"These little kids at night, they're crazy; they get on the bus, they look, they're trying to figure out who's got money or something," AC Transit rider Robert Jones said.

AC Transit acknowledges some of the troublesome passengers are armed.

  8. In the category of "interesting" it would be my nominee for "city most like the FSU"

No, this is not in Africa....

This is across the bridge from SF but close enough...

    7906 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland, CA

It sits on MacArthur Blvd, named after General MacArthur of all people :hehe:

  9. Alla hates public transport now. One difference here is that there are a lot more "undesireables" on public transport here than in Ukraine and Russia. At least as a percentage. because everyone there uses public transport whereas here is is only people that cannot afford a car or cannot drive for other reasons

I wouldn't even step foot on an S.F. bus for $100. We got all sorts of lowlifes on them. Maybe with an Uzi though B-)

  10. $480 Nice..guess he has to chip in for the illegals living in cali

Don't forget about those $200k-$300k/year public worker salaries.

Also, they're not illegals, they're just un-documented  The media here does not use the term "illegal". They don't want to be insensitive

Fun times living in Cali, my brother just returned from a weeklong cruise and I had to check up on his shop after my job and be there on the weekend while he was gone. During this time, I saw someone getting chased down the street with a hammer and had the hammer thrown at him. Then he picks up the hammer, turns around and clocks the guy who threw it at him on the head with the hammer :bonk:

Next day, the toilet drain was clogged. The kitchen area in the next room was ok. Pulled up the toilet and we snaked up a flushed diaper

Sat night, 3 hoodrat teen girls loitered in the store and wouldn't leave when asked. Then they made a scene and called us racist. Its not a store that does any business to kids or teens. They really had no business being in there except to kill time waiting for their mama to pick them up.

I don't even want to know what goes on regularly, I keep my distance for a reason  ...

  11. The entire system in America is corrupt. In Russia, you pay the cops when you mess up. Here, you have to pay an entire industry. Meanwhile the taxpayers are also paying for it.

Over there, your DUI costs $50. Here, it costs several hundred bucks each to: get out of jail, pay an attorney, go to court, pay fees, take remedial classes, pay your DL reinstatement fees, increased insurance premiums and whatever else you have to pay to get from point A to B in the meantime.

My brother's employee was nabbed by a red light camera a few weeks ago. This was his result

  12. I bet it would look like Madison, Wisconsin

Taxes are one of the reasons you pay so much for a plumber. 15% of what you pay him is gone immediately in self employment tax. If he is charging $75 per hour...

I doubt the plumber is really going to report that he scammed charged a customer $300 for the clogged toilet to the govt  Most likely he's going to under reporting his income and pocketing that difference

  13. I suppose if you really want to see corruption in San Jose drop city workers salaries in half and then see how things are.

With high salaries, they're still corupt. Not like its going to make a difference. Check out this news that broke here this week:

Prosecutors say the commander of a state narcotics task force in Contra Costa County has acknowledged stealing and selling drugs that were seized during raids.

Forty-nine-year-old Norman Wielsch, the head of the Central Contra Costa Narcotics Enforcement Team, was arraigned Friday on 28 felony counts, including drug possession. He did not enter a plea.

  14. Corruption in America? I don't think so...

Anyone call a plumber lately? Tow service? Legalize robbery....

Whats with all the taxes we pay?

    property tax

    sales and use tax

    income tax

    alcoholic beverage tax

    cigarette and tobacco tax

    car registration tax

    gift tax

    e-waste

    parcel tax

    airport tax

    etc

Check out the salary info for city workers around these parts...

    Northern California:

Livermore City Manager Linda Barton $302,472

San Ramon manager Herb Moniz's $359,669

Dublin's city manager Joni Pattillo $205,000

San Jose retired police chief yearly pension estimated at more than $200,000

The average San Jose city worker who retired in the 2009-10 fiscal year after at least 26 years of service earned a starting pension of $93,200. For retiring police and firefighters, that number was $119,000
