I'm glad you got your mom's BC issue sorted out before her interview.  At my interview, I overheard some applicants being scolded (politely) by the consul officer for missing documents.  The ones I heard were about foreign police certificates though, not BC late registration.  On one hand, I felt sorry for the applicants.  At the same time, I agreed with the CO's point that all the requirements were spelled out in the instructions on the embassy's website and emails.

I agree with you. Either way, this process is long and tedious and overwhelming to a lot of people. How lucky are we that we have visajourney peeps to help us out, huh? :) I love this community.

Oh yeah that was another thing. That foreign police clearance. That got me worried. My mom lived in Africa for a couple of years when she was around 17-18 years old. A police clearance from where she lived requires an in person visit. There was no way she was going to go there in person. Last I read that place was not safe and peaceful at all. I suggested she just type a letter explaining it, then sign it.  I read somewhere on here someone did the same thing and NVC took it. Thank goodness they accepted hers too. Whew!

I know I should know this already but I haven’t been as thorough as I should’ve been. Mainly due to all the COVID changes. Man I am telling you I cannot keep up with COVID updates! :D What is next? I remember about CFO - I think it’s online or something now. I also read somewhere about being a certain age (60 I think?) she didn’t need this?

The document screener was just doing her job.  If your mother did not have supporting documents for her late-registered birth certificate, she likely would have received a 221g letter from the consul officer and her visa case would have been temporarily refused.

Immigrant visas typically have the annotation "IV DOCS IN CCD" now.  That means the immigrant case files will be sent to DHS electronically.  USEM's instructions for the new immigrant would be sent via email to the visa holder and their petitioner.  So the delivery package would really have only the passport with visa.

Hi Chancy, I was joking about the lady lol  The late filing of her birth certificate was never an issue for us since I had my mom take care of this years and years and years ago.

I haven’t seen her visa yet. She said it’s good until April 25th. Her medical exam expires around the same time I believe. I know she is hoping to maximize all that time before coming here. We’ll see lol

Congratulations!!!! What were the questions asked?

Hi there. They asked her where I worked and why her birth certificate was filed late. She was born right after WWII in a little town so it was possible stuff were burned or missing. Nevertheless, I knew this to be an issue a long time ago and had this taken care of. Lady at the embassy (not the consul) probably was just being nosy lol

She got her passport and visa in the mail today. Is that it? I remember my packet to be so much more than that…

Congratulations to you and your mom! You dont need to sign in on your ceac account. You just need to click this link https://ceac.state.gov/CEACStatTracker/Status.aspx and put in your petition details and it will show you if they already updated it. It will say Issued if visa is approved and It will say Ready if they havent updated on their end!

Thank you so much for the link!!  You have been so helpful.

Now to convince my nieces to let their grandma go so I can have my mother back lol

You just need to upload all updated documents. Such as recent W2s and tax transcripts (ie 2020 tax transcripts). Be sure to bring the physical copy on her interview date! Goodluck to your mom!

Thank you! She had her interview done yesterday. She said the officer basically told her the recommendation is a visa approval.

You had a post where you showed a screenshot of the visa “issued” in CEAC. Was that right when you logged in? I can still log in and I don’t know where to find that.

Hi! My mom’s IR5 case was DQ on Aug 2020 and she just got her interview date  yesterday and it will be on Nov 5.

    Hi lorisglen,

My mom’s was DQd June 2020 and her interview is on Tuesday 11/9. I got this email checklist about uploading all documents to CEAC before the interview. We have already done that before she got DQd when all docs were submitted to NVC. Does she need to do them all over again or whatever were uploaded previously are good to go?

Police clearances are now valid for TWO years for US immigration purposes - they changed this a while back, presumably partly because of situations like the OP’s during COVID.

    https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/step-5-collect-financial-evidence-and-other-supporting-documents/step-7-collect-civil-documents.html

Important: Police certificates expire after two years, unless the certificate was issued from your country of previous residence and you have not returned there since the police certificate was issued. If at the time of your interview the following three items are all true, you must bring a new police certificate to your visa interview:

    • You are more than 16 years old;
    • The police certificate submitted to NVC was obtained more than two years ago; and
    • You still live in the country that issued the certificate.

    Thank you SusieQQQ.

See Jorgedig, this is how helping looks like.

  8. No need to be a wise ###. First sentence was good enough. Nobody argued that an expired document is still valid.

I came here to seek advice not snark or to be mocked. The pandemic affected everything. You see, back in the day, the documents you bring to the interview must be the same ones you sent to NVC (refer to the screenshot). The Department of State’s website does not mention anything about expired supporting documents. No mention of needing to get a new one or not. There’s always a chance it’s there and I missed it. That’s just how government websites work. You have to actually know where to look. I know because I also work for the government but not the Department of State so I don’t know how to navigate their website. As you can see we don’t have a lot of time. Hence, seeking advice from here. I remember this forum to be a lot friendlier then.

We had the same issue too. My husband studied in China for 2 years and NVC needed a police clearance from China. However, my husband at that time had left China back to his home country when NVC made that request. We tried every means but did not yield any results. I called NVC and explained to them and I was asked to tell my husband to write a letter indicating the reasons why he couldn't get the police clearance from China and have him sign it. He did exactly that and the letter was mailed to NVC which was accepted. It took about 3 to 4 days after it was received for his case to be finalized. He is waiting for his interview date at the moment.

This is good to know. My mom is 70 years old and finished high school in Monrovia, Liberia (West Africa). Liberia requires that the police clearance certificate is requested in person. My mom hasn’t gone back there since she graduated high school. So I was searching the internet for services like DocAssist for West Africa. I am in touch with a company right now that can’t seem to explain their services in writing clearly and wants my phone number (yikes) to explain their services verbally. My spidey senses are tingling.

I am waiting to do my Oat Ceremony then start the process for my mom. I am excited to follow your journey to see what this timeline is like.

Did you do a bank check? Or was it a money order?

It is up to you. Money order normally you cannot track if it's been cashed. If bank check you will know exactly when it was cashed.

  11. Hi all,

I am about to file a petition for my mother who's in the Philippines. The issue I see right now is that on my birth certificate her place of birth (Lupao) doesn't match the place of birth on her birth certificate.

The thing is my mom was born in 1948 and she actually didn't have any birth certificate until just recently. And all this time she thought she was born in Lupao (which is what's on my birth certificate).

Do we need to provide her birth certificate at any time during the petition process or just my birth certificate?

I was going through the I-130 and it asks my mom's place of birth. I am not sure what to write down.

Any helpful assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  12. Congratulations Tokki. Hopefully you hear back soon. It will be a great New Year's present.

I am planning on petitioning my mother in the next few months. I know the I-130 is $420. How much are the fees for NVC now? If I remember correctly when I got petitioned years ago we paid NVC $88 and $400 something. Is it still the same amount? I just want to make sure to have a budget for everything.

    Thank you.

  13. Thanks JimmyHou. My friend will have to wait to file her N-400 then because her husband is 72 and does not remember where his first marriage certificate is or if it was filed or even WHERE he got married. Oh my goodness. I know you can obtain certified copies from the Vital Records office of the state you were married in. But the question is where because he does not remember. Wonderful.

  14. It is 200 plus days over 5 years. Ok so no problem for that.

I am not sure if her husband added her on the lease agreement. Hopefully, he did. I am going to see her this weekend to ask more questions and go over her paperwork.

I have another question. Both of them have been married 3x. She needs to send copies of all her marriage certificates and divorce decrees. How about her current husband? Does she need to show his marriage certificates and divorce decrees from previous marriages too?

  15. I am sure this has been asked a hundred times here but I can't seem to find the answers. I am asking because I am helping my friend. She is filing for N400 under the 5 year rule. She has been here 11 years. But she does not work. She hasn't been working for a long time. She is almost 70. She has been in and out of the US a lot in the last 5 years to visit her kids in Malaysia and Australia. Each trip did not last more than 3 months, however, the total number of days are over 200. Is this going to be an issue? I also wonder what paperwork she will need to submit along with her application? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  16. I received a call from our local USCIS last Thursday 3/26/15 and since I was at work they left a message. They told me they just sent the oath ceremony letter out that day and it was going to be on 4/3/2015 (today).

It said to report promptly at 1:15pm so we did. They let the applicants in and called us one by one to surrender our green cards and the oath letters and took our assigned seats. While this was happening the USCIS Director was telling us how and what to do after the citizenship. What our responsibilities are as citizens. He also picked on some applicants. He is a funny man. Then they allowed the guests in. Then the Director picked on them this time. He asked them questions from the 100 questions we had to study. We were told we were allowed to take pictures at any time during the ceremony. The ceremony officially began at 2:30 pm. Watched a couple videos and listened to a few speeches. And then called us one by one again to receive our certificates. We were done in less than an hour as there were only 30 applicants.

As of today, I am now an American! american.gif

  17. I had my test and interview this morning. My appointment was at 10:15 am. I arrived 20 minutes before my appointment. They called me in at exactly 10:15 am. The officer introduced herself on the way to her office. When we got there she asked me to remain standing while taking an oath. She asked me for my passport, state issued ID or license and my green card. She then made me sign the ID pictures I included in my application. Then she proceeded to go through my application. The first part of the test was the reading. She asked me to read "What is south of the United States?" and then write down the answer for the written part of the test "Mexico is south of the United States." She then asked me the following questions:

    1. How many justices are on the Supreme Court?

    2. We elect a US Senator for how many years?

    3. If both the President and the Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes the President?

    4. What does the President's Cabinet do?

    5. Name one branch or part of the government?

    6. What did the Declaration of Independence do?

She then informed me that I will get a letter in the mail when the oath ceremony is going to be then gave me the receipt or paperwork saying that I passed the test and she is recommending me for approval. The paper also states something about wearing proper attire for the ceremony.

It was a very straightforward and quick process. She did not ask me to show her proof of marital union etc. I was out of USCIS at 10:35 am.

  18. Thanks! Mine changed from "case received" on January 9th, too, but it changed to "in line for interview (scheduling)". So I was wondering if there will be an update (to "interview scheduled") before they send out the interview invites :)

Oh. Mine changed straight to Interview was scheduled. Then something like on Jan 9th yada yada... So I figured that was the "in line for interview" part. The interview letter was dated Jan 12th.

  19. Updating my info. Received interview letter today. Interview date set on 02/13/2015. There's a checklist that came with the letter and boy, they want a lot of things. Pretty much bringing almost the same documents you mailed in with the N-400 application. They want the originals.
