PNWUnited reacted to ToddD in How to get a temporary passport in Canada while waiting for your passport with visa (split)
Here is an update for anyone that has a visa / passport stuck at the consulate and they must travel. You can get a temporary passport. Cost is about $200 CAD.

Be prepared to spend many hours at the passport office and also be prepared for the staff there not knowing what you're talking about. You'll need to be polite but push for what is allowed to get the temp passport and when you get your original back with the visa in it to do a exchange, where the original passport with the visa in it is activated again (only one passport can be active at a time) and surrender the temp passport.
Ask for a temporary passport application, because your current passport is "Inaccessible" (official term is Inaccessible Passport) You can get a temp passport if you prove your current passport is stuck at a foreign consulate for processing AND you must travel Show proof of your passport being stuck in processing with the consulate and also proof that you have corresponded with them about the delays.  Show proof of upcoming travel Bring an original birth certificate and proof of your identity  Fill-out an application for a temporary passport (might be the same as a regular passport, but make sure they file it properly) Provide a guarantor (my wife used her adult daughter that is not living with her). The agent will call.  Provide 2 references that are friends that can vouch for you. The agent will call them.  If travel is urgent, the passport can be made within a couple of days, so show proof that you must pick it up in time for travel.  Once you pick-up the temp passport, make sure there is a stamp/sticker inside that shows that it is a temp passport (the cover won't say it).  I heard the temp passport is good for one year, not just for this specific travel date.  When you arrive at the border, bring your proof of travel, proof of needing the temp passport, and of course your temp passport. In our case, the USA agent didn't ask for anything other than the passport and didn't say anything or ask about it, but that's no guarantee.  When you finally receive your original passport with the visa, go to the passport office again Request that you need to surrender your temp passport and have the original activated again.  You cannot carry two passports (from what we were told), so you need to activate one and surrender the other.  You might need to push that you're not applying for anything new and all the agent needs to do is accept your temp passport and activate the original. My wife had to push a little about the urgency of this swap, because the initial staff wanted her to wait in the long application line all day. This wasn't necessary.  My wife stood with the agent while the original was being activated again on the screen. It takes about 30 minutes for the system to process the swap, but it will be fairly quick (not hours or days).

PNWUnited reacted to CanCal2016 in Car Lien & Importation Question
AH. Okay, so for everyone still following along with this thread...
I spoke to a CBP officer at the POE that I will be driving through and this is what he told me:
    - I CAN drive my car through the border and import at a later time.
    - No paperwork required for the vehicle at this point.
    - I have up to a year to import my vehicle, and can do so at MOST major international airports (which saves me a hassle, because LAX offers this option, and is relatively close to where I'll be living)
    - Just make an appointment with the CBP office at the closest international airport and they'll import the vehicle
    - I will be taking out a loan once I arrive at my final destination, paying off my lien on the vehicle, and will be free to import the vehicle then. I have a letter of compliance from Mitsubishi, stating that it complies with all US and Canadian standards. My insurance will cover me in the US and in Canada until the lien is paid off, then I will be registering the vehicle with California plates and the title will be in my name. Along this time I'll be getting insurance to cover my vehicle.
Sounds like a nightmare of a process, BUT I have spoken with WAY too many people about this who are supposedly "in the know", and this all seems to be correct from their end.
Here's hoping haha Thanks for all the input folks!

PNWUnited reacted to Peot in Importing Chrysler (Dodge, Jeep) from Canada to US
I saw there was another recent post here about bringing a car down, but I wanted to make this post here to be accurate and specific to cars manufactured by the FCA... basically all Chrysler brands. I had a massive run-around and wanted to give people a heads up, step-by-step for those who are currently here on VJ and those who may be finding this through search results online. Note that this was done on a newer car - older cars and imports are completely different and may require further EPA compliance such as having it brought up to standards.

I called the border. What CBP said:

Yes, I called the border. I found a number for the specific border crossing online and asked straight from the horses mouth what they look for.
When I told the CBP officer I owned a Dodge, he groaned into the phone and said "For some reason they've been giving people a hard time for the past year". In fact, I found posts on this very forum going as far back as 2008 where people were having issues. Nearly a decade of problems.

    They look for the following:
EPA standards sticker under the hood + DOT import tag on the door jamb OR EPA sticker + A letter of compliance from the manufacturer for safety standards. Compliance letter alone with both EPA and DOT safety standards.
The only way you're getting a DOT import tag is if you go through a registered importer ($1000+), or if you purchased the car specifically for sale in the US (which isn't the case if you're driving down).

To get a letter of compliance for all Chrysler vehicles, you need to call the FCA USA branch, NOT the Canadian branch! The Canadian branch is for importing vehicles INTO Canada, not OUT of Canada.

The call(s) to FCA Customer Care

I called the FCA (US branch) and told them I was importing a vehicle. At first she had no clue what I was talking about but I convinced her that it was definitely the right department (why did I need to do this??). I was eventually told I would need to show the following:

Current vehicle odometer reading. Note that most modern cars can readily switch between miles and kilometers, but you do not need to switch this. This is optional. They accept both.  Copy of your visa (NOA2 letter does not work. I tried). Basically they need proof that you're moving to the US. A job offer also would do. Current registration showing license plate number and current owner name. An address where they will send the info. TIP: Also include an email address!
I tried faxing it to the number they gave me the very next day and it rings forever. The fax does not work because of some long distance issue I assume.
After calling back I got a toll free fax number for sending this above info to the FCA:
I will not include this number here as it is subject to change! As well, you MUST reference a ticket number or they will not reply! ASK FOR THE TICKET NUMBER AND TOLL-FREE FAX NUMBER WHEN YOU CALL!

After waiting 5 business days I called back and (as stated above), learned that the NOA2 was not good enough. I was able to speak to the agent and transfer a copy of my visa over the internet, which frankly they should have done from the very beginning!! I also told her to add a note that I wanted it emailed to me rather than snail mailed! Do this too! She told me to call back in 2 days if I had not heard back. I waited 3. Sure enough the email came! I still to this day have not received the snail mail copy. If you can convince them to do all of the above via the internet before waiting 20 days, do so! They have the ability! If they say they don't, talk to a supervisor.

In all total 20+ days of waiting. 5 calls to the FCA. One one person of the 5 knew what the procedure was. I can see why the CBP officer groaned.

I have been here for a couple months, reading up on posts, looking for similar situations and for any hope. My status was changed to issued today!!!!! I thought I'd post our timeline in case it may help anyone else.

Aug 11, 2022 - interview in Montreal. Refused due to incorrect police check, given 221 g. Kept my passport. Officer said it would take about a week to send my Visa back once they receive the correct police check.
Sept 13, 2022 - Canada Post Tracking confirmed police check was delivered to the Consulate address
Sept 14, 2022 - Case was updated  but still refused (unsure if because they received the check or because of replying to an email)
I sent two emails requesting confirmation of receipt of documents. They said they cannot confirm, the mail first goes to a sorting facility, then is given to an officer at the Consulate. Thanked me for my patience.
Oct 20, 2022 - status switched to Issued, may take up to 10 business days to receive the Visa.

Wanted to post our journey in case it gives anyone else some idea of what the timelines are looking like. Best of luck to everyone on here waiting. It is not for the faint of heart.
