So I don't need to wait to apply for AOS to get insurance? Do I need to wait until we are married? I plan to get her social security card first, then get married about a month after her arrival. Could I just apply as soon as she has a I-94 or do I need to wait for another event? Thank you for sharing your experience.

I would be willing to be for routine medical care, but even one trip to an emergency room can be extremely expensive. Any long term illness would also be very expensive, which is why I wanted to get a plan.

If a subsidy is received, could that impact the Adjustment of Status process? I wanted to just purchase insurance outright to avoid her showing as receiving government assistance.

I receive medical care through the Veteran's Administration, so I don't have a health insurance policy. They wouldn't cover a spouse unless she was a veteran as well. Thank you for the suggestion though.

My fiance is arriving next week on a K-1 visa. I have been trying to purchase health insurance for her. I am self employed and use the VA for my medical needs, so I don't have a policy I can add her to. This last week, I have contacted several health insurance companies to get quotes and see if I can purchase a policy for my fiance. All companies have turned me down. They have stated that they can only do policies for citizens or permanent residents. They have all referred me to the government exchange for more information. I am not trying to purchase anything through an exchange, I would simply like to purchase a private health care plan, but it seems all the companies I have interacted with only go through the exchange. The agents I spoke with also stated thye wouldn't be able to sell insurance even if she were a citizen because of the enrollment period. They stated to qualify for an exception, she must already have valid insurance. Given the length of time until a green card would be received, I think there must be a better option. I have not been able to find anything that would forbid someone arriving on a K-1 visa from buying health insurance from the searches I have done. Is there anyone who can provide anymore information on this topic? I'm sure we're not the first people in this situation and there must be some company or health plan for those in our situation.

I saw the embassy website posted that there is no requirement anymore to have a negative covid test to come to the US. This should apply to travel from any country. Thank you! I ended up mostly sending documents directly from the brokerage. 1099's, some monthly statements, and a tax return. I think they wanted to see something more directly from the brokerage, rather than the IRS transcripts that were brought to the interview.

I wanted to give a big thank you to everyone who responded to this post. I used the community advice in deciding which papers to send the embassy. I just saw that our case status is showing as "Issued" so I believe the visa has been approved and is hopefully on the way. For the last couple of years that we've been stuck in the visa process, this community has been immensely helpful and we are grateful for anyone who takes the time to help others get through this process.

I sent the last 3 years of IRS transcripts. I appreciate the advice, I will definitely consider the joint sponsor. I had family members offer this, but I didn't think it would be necessary at the time. I didn't want to bring anyone else into this unless absolutely necessary because even though I'm confident I can support my future wife, there are always unforeseen events that can happen. If that is what it takes to bring her here, I'm willing to give it a try.

Thank you for the input. My adjusted gross income and total income on my taxes are the same, which are well above the poverty guidelines. As far as using a joint sponsor, I may consider that. I felt that since I met the income requirements and also had assets, it wouldn't be necessary. It may be simpler if I have a joint sponsor with a regular job.

I haven't applied with the IRS to be a qualified trader. I can look into that, but I'm not sure it would help right now. I have provided as many documents as I can to support what was provided at the interview to show more details. Hopefully, if it isn't enough, they can be more specific with what they would like. Thank you for the information, it is good to hear from someone with experience in trading.

Thank you for the suggestions. The only way I could find to contact the embassy regarding a visa question was through the online inquiry form. I used that and received a response, but the answer was vague. They asked for "original documents." I'm not sure what they are referring to. As far as asking for a different official, I'm not sure I get that luxury. I appreciate the letter and hopefully the documents we send may attest to my ability to earn income as a self-employed person.

Thank you for the support. I felt pretty crushed when I first heard the news, but I'm hopeful now that a little more paperwork will help us get past this hurdle.

It says, "Proof of your fiance's income in his current job." It isn't any more specific than that. I'll use the suggestions I got here and hopefully that works.

With this wide latitude in mind, I guess it is best to just try to appease the officer. I hope they accept what I send them and provide more specifics if it isn't enough. This seems to be true. I think I sufficiently proved the assets, but they aren't going to consider that in this case. I think they are focusing more on the income. Since I provided IRS transcripts, they didn't see much detail in the income, just final results. I will submit more documents directly from the brokerage with extra details and hopefully it will be sufficient. I really wish though I could just talk to the consular officer to see what exactly they are looking for. I don't want to spend months waiting just to find out there was something else they wanted after I submit the 221g.

Yes, I had multiple accounts that more than met the asset threshold, so I thought I was double covered by meeting both the income requirement and the asset requirement. I would prefer not to have to get a lawyer when I'm confident I can prove I have sufficient income and assets. I think it is more of an issue of proving this to the embassy and submitting the correct paperwork. As far as calling the embassy, I couldn't find a number for issues like this. There is an online inquiry form, however, the response time is several weeks. I did submit an inquiry, but I don't expect a quick answer.
