The employer CAN NOT ask specifically for her green card. That is up to your wife what document she wants to provide as long as it complies with options in I-9 form. I NEVER showed my GC, always just SSN card and DL and that was enough.
Read the form I-9 - instructions are in the front and stand your ground - HR sometimes needs to be told what is legal and what not.

You never naturalized as a U.S. citizen. You never had to take the Oath of Allegiance, swearing off any and all loyalty to your former country of citizenship. For that reason you don't have a Certificate of Naturalization, and for that reason you are proud to be a Pakistani, instead of being proud to be an American. I'm just curious why you want you mom to come to America, instead of you moving back to the country you love so much?

I don't believe that 50% of responsibility for the situation translates into 50% of the financial costs. In my opinion, legally, the inviting party should not be liable for anything. MORALLY, I completely agree that the inviting party should at very least assist the "visiting" party to return to their country of origin.
