I have never been able to make an avocado plant grow from the pit - it just doesn't work no matter what I do.
Most of the common types of orchids (like phalaeonopsis and dendrobiums) need a temperature drop at night for 4-6 weeks to trigger setting their flower buds - days around 70-85 degrees and nights around 50-60 degrees. So for a year-round location, right next to the radiator is probably not optimum unless you can turn it down at night for a month during that crucial period in the fall or early winter.
Other than orchids (and phals are really pretty easy,) some other flowering houseplants that do well inside in bright areas are: as you mentioned African violets, also Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera,) begonias, geraniums, crown of thorns, and kalanchoe. Peace lily will take medium light.

The one plant I have that does very well is an avocado plant I grew from a pit. I am jealous of the green thumbs you ladies have. After the first of the year I am resigning from my job and I am definitely going to putt more time and effort into my indoor plants. Do you guys have any suggestions for types of flowering plants that would be good for a novice. My grandmother always had the most beautiful African violets. I'm going to buy a table to put in front of the windows that have sun, but under the windows are big radiators, my house is 102 years old and still has the original ones. I hope the heat doesn't prevent them from growing.

    Oh the anticipation......
Our weather is in yo-yo mode:
Last week: arctic cold front kept us between 30 and 45
This week: sunny and warm with highs of 80 and lows of 65
Coming tomorrow: a 50 degree plunge and another week of frigid temps
Redneck greenhouse about to be put to the acid test

Are you guys voting on getting this thread pinned? If so, that was done a few years ago... and is why it is always at the top of the forum

No one is as invested in your immigration to the US as you and your wife (I guess?). People on here have repeatedly told you that your wife should come on this site and read the guides, do her research, and ask the questions if she has any. So far as I know that advice has gone unheeded. You were also given plenty of good tips for the interview on your previous threads. So what else is there to say? I hope for your sake that your interview goes better this time around. Bring every little piece of evidence that your marriage is bonafide, do practice interview questions with your wife to make sure you know her as well as you think you do, and that's pretty much all there is. The rest is up to the CO. Inshallah all will work out in the end. Bonne chance.

Didn't realize he was one of the non-listeners. I always wonder why people ask the same questions over and over expecting different answers. His wife as the petitioner should be the one here, not him. I gave up long ago trying to help people who can't understand a word of English. SMH

So your husband arrived in 12/12 to the US and then turned right around and went back to Morocco that same month? How did he leave the first time? And not only is he not allowed to leave, but he's also had a lost in the mail permanent resident card? That is a helluva string of bad luck.

    A. and I have been to some pretty desperately poor countries in the world. Places where there is no such thing as chemotherapy, or it's only a luxury of the rich. I think if parents of dying children in said countries were to hear of parents in the US or Europe who have access to treatments proven effective but instead let their children die for religious reasons, they would rise up in bitter anger and anguish. We have no idea how lucky we are to live in a country with access to cutting edge scientific and medical advancements. The things we take for granted boggles my mind. My closest childhood friend wouldn't be alive today if not for catching his leukemia early and the very effective chemotherapy he was given.

The rights of minors in matters of their own reproductive issue not only has nothing to do with this case, it's also patently false that OTC emergency contraception can be purchased by 4th graders. It's FDA approved for 15+. Fail, and fail.

I hate kids dying, and when said death is possibly preventable, it crushes my heart like nothing much else in this world can.

I know. I'm not in any way promoting the procedure routinely, for this or any other reason. UTI rates are about 1% in boys, from birth to age 5. When they do occur, 86% are in uncircumcised males. It's a factor in diagnosing sick baby boys. Yes, there's a relationship, no, it still doesn't mean every boy should be circumcised. Two different things.

    Happy Thanksgiving all,
We had our Thanksgiving last Sunday a bit early on Mohammed's birthday. My daughter will celebrate with her dad's family so we had a early celebration but it was yummy.
Thanksgiving day, we will spend the day at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It's one of the most rewarding days of the year for me, but at the same time, I will find myself weeping in the restroom often and trying to put on a cheerful smile. Our day will consist of singing songs, reading books, dancing, making cards and holiday ornaments. Tomorrow could be the last day for many of these children, and it's so important for me to share my love and hugs with as many as I can.
That's my Thanksgiving Day, I wish you all a wonderful day too.
