SSN can take a few months to arrive nowadays. I'd definitely wait. Applying for an SSN could result in major headaches down the road if the applications happen to cross.
When we applied for my stepdaughter's SSN (11 months after her arrival she never got one), they only asked for photocopies of passport/green card to be mailed. A few weeks later they mailed us an interview notice, and we brought original docs to that appointment. They only checked her passport and we were out in <60 seconds.
I HIGHLY recommend against sending in your original passport until you have your green card in hand, and you're willing to take a trip to your home country's consulate to apply for a replacement.
What could be the major headache if applications cross? In an ideal scenario I agree with you but waiting months for USCIS to wake up is not an option for most people who need to work etc.
On a side note I got notified by the USCIS today that they have issued the green card so it should be arriving in the mail in a few days hopefully. But I dont think there's a way to see if they have done anything on the SSN.
Thanks for the responses guys!

Due to the pandemic, there will be longer waiting time. call the nearest social security office and set up a one to one appointment, submit the form along with your original passport and MRIV and birth certificate.
this method will save you alot of time than waiting to be verfied by dhs.
I have sent them one with a copy of my passport. Lets see what they say, nobody answers the phone.

Hey, I arrived in Portland last week and am looking to get my SSN, drivers license etc. sorted.
The problem with the SSN is they ask you to fill out a form and mail it to the office with the supporting documents. I don't want to risk mailing my passport (my visa is the main document I have till the green card arrives) as it is the only real form of ID I have right now.
Also I seem to remember that on the DS260 I checked a box which authorized them to process a SSN which should reach the person in around 3 week after arriving in the US.
So basically what are people doing on arriving in the US nowadays, with regards to getting a SSN?

Where do you get the A-number and DOS Case ID? Is the DOS Case ID the same as NVC ID?
It will be on your visa once it is issued.

How much were the fees paid at the embassy?
There is no fee that needs to be paid at the embassy. Once you are issued the visa, you have to go to USCIS site and pay immigration fee of $220.

Wait for them to come back to you and then send your passport via Empost. I was instructed at the interview to submit my passport at Empost, hence I did it at the same time. You should wait, i believe, until asked by the embassy.
I did send a follow up email to the embassy email address asking for an update. I guess it’ll be good that you send a follow up email as well asking when can you submit your passport.
submitting passport at Empost is straightforward. The empost guy helped us out in this. We have to print a document from the link https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ae/iv. Follow steps. You will click on submit additional documents, print and give it to Empost along with your passport.
Ah I see. I got the email to send it in today along with the birth certificate. I'll have a look at the link.
Thanks a lot!

Okay
Do you have any information about its expiry date. Even though my DS 260 expiration date is mentioned till 2022 in ceac form but I’m confused since my DS 260 got approved in 2019 so its been almost 2 years now.
Will they ask me to update it or anything?
Umm I'm sorry I really dont know much about this, maybe ask in one of the main forums Im sure other people would have gone through similar circumstances.

Right , I got you.
And did they ask you for your DS 260 confirmation?
Yup its important, they check it at the entrance. The consular officer did not ask again for it specifically.

But wasn’t your original birth certificate uploaded already?
Yeah but it was one issued by the embassy of Pakistan, they wanted one issued by the Department of Health.

I had my interview at the Abu Dhabi embassy. It was quick and pretty straightforward. Basic questions asked was how we met, where does my spouse work, have I travelled before to the US and what was the purpose of my visit.
The VO said everything looks good. However, he could not see on CEAC my birth certificate and marriage certificate. Also, I went in with my new passport since the older had a validity of less than 6 months. So he wanted me to upload to CEAC the new passport copy. I informed that the other two documents (minus the new passport) are already on CEAC. He advised that in order to speed things up I can email the Embassy the requested documents.
He then asked me to upload the AOS and IRS 2019 transcript. I showed him these documents as I was carrying hard copies of each. He said that this is good and he made a note on the system.
I was then given a 221g blue form and asked to upload/email all the requested documents. He asked me to submit my passport as well to Empost. I did all this on the same day. After 5 days the status on CEAC shows issued. Waiting for my passport now.
Hope this review helps people out there!!
Congratulations!
I was asked to upload my original birth certificate too. But they returned my passport. I uploaded the BC last night. Do I wait for them to come back to me and ask me to mail the passport? (hopefully)
And when you do that do you just go to EMPOST and mail to the embassy?

USCIS status says they have ordered the card to be produced, but I believe this is the green card. Im not sure if this impacts the SSN in any way.
