  1. I guess? As long as they're not going to throw an application out for blank fields. Back a few years ago when I was filling out the IR visa paperwork that WAS an issue, but there was no online filing option for that. So I guess we'll file online and put just NA where we can (skip the slash) and if we can't we'll just leave the field blank. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the heads up...That's crazy--- I am expecting a big refund too.  Was your situation similar to mine?  Where is the worksheet and how can I calculate it?  If you would have owed the IRS money anyway, it sounds like you aren't claiming the correct amount on your W4 or equivalent document, or you are purposely cutting it very close ( which some people do).

Honestly, I'm not sure. I was looking at the IRS online forms (just googled for IRS form 2555), but I missed the part about the different tax worksheet...now I'm going to pay someone to figure this out for me :)  My W4 never seems to be right, but I don't really care as it all comes out the same in the end. If I can get more money back by refiling, however, I sure will.

Yes.. I think that's why he used the 1116

Ours at least came out even..

Another accountant, who totally messed up everything , used the 2555 and the results were not pretty.. we had to refile everything.. a substantial fee to another accountant who actually did know what he was doing.. our initial IRS bill was 4000$... which we paid to get it clear, then were refunded the full amount 6 months later when our 1040x finally went through.

Thanks, we'll definitely look into refiling for 2017 with the 1116 and see how that goes. If it works, I'll redo 2016 as well!

  4. I just filed my 2017 taxes as Married Filing Jointly and filled out the 2555EZ and thought I was receiving a huge refund. Come to find out that if you fill out a 2555EZ your tax is calculated differently, using a worksheet. I ended up owing the IRS money, almost as much as had I filed Married Filing Separately. Just a heads up, you might want to run the numbers both ways and see what works better for you. I still came out about $240 ahead filing jointly but it wasn't nearly what I was expecting.

  5. Thank you pushbrk and Miss Accountant, I really appreciate your comments and the fact that you can recognize hyperbole when you see it.

We do have his social security card, although we had to go apply directly at the local social security office even though we did check the "yes" box when we filed the last round of paperwork (it's been a while now and I've blissfully forgotten, I think that part was with the DoS? I wonder now whether the letter that came really was his green card, wouldn't that be just too much... I did check with USCIS and they said it was delivered though so I'm pretty sure it's gone) - the lady at the social security office said in her experience they only submit the paperwork for the SSN about half the time! And we do have the stamp in his passport which should be good until the replacement card comes. It's still a little unnerving, given the political climate, but it isn't the end of the world. We just got the letter informing us of our biometrics appointment so at least things seem to be rolling. Thank you again for talking to me like a human being who made a mistake instead of treating me like a responsibility-shirking homicidal monster. I wish everyone the best of luck with whatever future mistakes lie in their path and I hope they encounter compassionate people to help them through when they need it.

  6. My husband received his permanent resident visa in March, and since then he's moved over here and we've left my parents' house for our own place. We didn't change the address that his card would get sent to, however, thinking that it might cause more problems than just leaving it alone. Well, it turns out that was a mistake because my father lost his card. He remembers the letter coming to the house (although he thought it was from the state we live in, I had to explain that's not what the Department of State is) but now can't find it. I'm wondering if anyone else has been through this, and how long from filing the I-90 did it take to get their card? USCIS website estimates 9-11 months but they also say it takes that long to get the card in the first place and it actually only took about 2 months... I'm hoping the process is not so long, and not very stressful! I could just kill my father. I thought we were done with these damn forms for at least a few years!

  7. I looked through the notes I have from Saylin but I didn't see anything about this, so apologies if it has already been answered or I missed it. Does anyone know what the fee for the interview is? I see the $165 for the green card, is that it? Or is the interview fee something else that varies by country? My husband was told they only accept cash so we want to know how much he needs to bring along. He is freaking out a little :)

  8. My CC data was 2/8/2017, which I got by calling, still no email from NVC. We are in Iceland and I thought we'd have our interview scheduled immediately, but we are still waiting. The only case on the spreadsheet for Iceland is from 2013 and they had their interview scheduled on their CC day. I am so tired of this. I really hope we get something in March, if we have to go into April I might go crazy.

PS - I can't update the spreadsheet with my info at work but I will do it ASAP.

  9. My husband is wondering how many past residences to list on the DS-260. While he was attending school in Sweden, he would come home to Iceland every summer to work a summer job and live at his parents' house. Should he list his parents' house as a residence each summer, or just leave his address(es) in Sweden as his residence during that time? He did this for 6 summers so it would be a lot of extra residences to list but if that's what they want we will certainly do it! I'm more worried about annoying the person who is reading our form than anything else, or them telling us we did it wrong and we have to resubmit.

  10. I think that no matter what happens, we should ALL write to our senators and let them know how long Nebraska takes and how unfair the whole process is. I see no reason why this could not be made more efficient. If their application assignment process were more evenly distributed from the very beginning I feel like that would already be a tremendous improvement. If Potomac and whoever else are only a few months behind while Nebraska is 7-9, send 2 out of every 3 applications you receive directly to the other processing centers! It seems so obvious and so easy to fix.

The squeaky wheels get the grease! And write to both your senators, I see no reason why this shouldn't have bipartisan support. If Repubs want to clean up immigration and want people to do it the legal way, they need to commit to improving the process. And I'm sure Dems would not want people to be stuck in limbo this long.

Best of luck to everyone, I'm on day 122 and going for my third visit to my husband this year. Thank god for frequent flyer miles. I am grateful I have a job that allows me to be gone so much and my heart breaks for those of you stuck apart until this process is over. But we will all make it through. And our relationships should be all the stronger for it!

  11. Hi everyone, just joined, our PD is 2/14 so we have a long road ahead of us :/

Is there any logic to how fast approvals come and the country of origin of the applicant? For example, it seems from looking at Igor's List that there are some people with PDs in December and January who already have their NOA2 (from the Nebraska service center even!) and I'm seeing Philippines come up a lot...

Trying to grasp at any straw after reading this thread :/  We have been married since August 21, 2016 but had a long, hard road to even get to that point and we just feel like we're wasting more and more time. I was hoping to have him over here by September but that looks like a pipe dream. Maybe November?

Best of luck to everyone here, nice to see people getting through this. It almost makes me want to go apply for a job at a service center so I can help other people get through this faster!
