  1. Ah, Dublin pre-clearance. It wasn't a thin man with ginger hair, by any chance? I had him once there and he was awful to me. He let me through without going to secondary but I felt he was very unprofessional in his approach. I used the machines but it wouldn't read my finger prints so I had to queue up for a desk. When I got to the desk he commented that my fingerprints couldn't be read by the machine and asked me to do them on the machine in front of him. As I lifted my hand he commented on the fact that I had 'multiple layers of clothing on' (I had a jacket, sweatshirt and t-shirt on but he would only have been able to see the jacket and sweatshirt). I explained I was going to Colorado (it was mid-December!). Seriously, not every Brit going to the US is headed to Orlando! He quizzed me why I was going to Colorado alone and I told him I was going to see my husband. He said 'So that explains why you're so nervous and clammy and your fingerprints won't read. Are you planning to stay there and not return?'. I was taken aback by this. I understand they have to question people and treat people with suspicion but I have a very good record of over 40 entries and exits - I used to work for American Airlines. I have always returned when I said I would. I'm 42 years old with a university degree and a career, not a teenager who thinks it would fun to run away to America. It was the assumption that I was lying that took me aback. At that time we were in the process of filing for a settlement visa for my husband for the UK and I showed him all the paperwork related to that. I told him I had no intention of staying, on the contrary - we were planning to have my husband move to the UK. He seemed to be offended by that and could not for the life of him imagine why anyone would want to leave the US for the UK. Very arrogant man.

Officer DIMATTINA (I will never forget his name and stupid face) at preclearance in Dublin made me miss my flight to New York when we had just filed the petition and I was travelling under ESTA.

I had to pay for my own hotel room in Dublin and had to get on another flight the next day, that MY AIRLINE was nice enough to gift to me. But when I got back to the UK from my New York trip I sent a long complaint to preclearance and they refunded my flight as the staff was being unprofessional and they saw other people before me, even tho I was the one with the most urgent flight. They kept me in secondary for no reason whatsoever only to ask me if I was bringing food to New York and why was I staying only for a week instead of 3 months.... CAUSE I HAVE A JOB???????

Seriously the worst experience ever, never ever flying into Dublin ever again.

  2. Don't worry! I have a full sleeve on my left arm, one on my rib cage, one on my ankle and 2 on my lower stomach. The lady just pointed out they were nice and colorful and we chatted about it, but in a very casual way. She obviously didn't think anything of it, and we got approved yesterday... so chill, tattoos are definitely not a problem, as long as they are not "violent" or anything like that....

  3. Little update from me! Flew in May 13th, settling in well with a few bumps along the way and have had some great support from other VJ-ers. We applied for AOS end of July, NOA was August 5th and our AOS was approved exactly three months later on November 5th with no interview ? To those going through the process it is worth it, it may get a little rough with adjusting to a new life in the US but it's totally worth it ? Now on to collating evidence for ROC in a couple years time. Wishing you all well on this crazy but worth it journey!

    First of all, CONGRATS!

Secondly... did I read that right?? It only took 3 months for your AOS to be approved?

  4. That's correct. They may also want to see an ID in the form of your passport/visa. The instruction sheet for the I-693 will describe how a K1 should fill it out. It will only be some of the pages that you and the CS will fill out. Our CS gave us a copy of what was placed in the sealed envelope.

    Thank you Yuna!

  5. Hi guys,

I went for the medical exam today, it was very straight forward and quick and the staff was nice (as they should, considering how much money I had to pay :/).

I have decided to get my vaccinations (the 10 years boost for Tetanus and the flu jab) with my GP, but unfortunately they weren't able to fit me in before the medical and I will get them done next week, the nurse at Knightsbridge gave me a copy of my vaccination record that she said I should take with me to the US, also I know that given that I will get my vaccines done after the medical, I will have to get the documentation to a civil surgeon to get it transcripted along the form I-693.

Now, my question is, what paperwork do I take with me when I go see the civil surgeon?

As per my understanding, it would be the following:

    - FULL form I-693

    - vaccination record released from Knightsbridge doctors

    - vaccination record released from my GP certifying that I did indeed get my shots done after the medical.

Could you please let me know if this is correct?

    Thank you

  6. None of them are waived for the K1, however having an incomplete vaccination record will not prevent the visa being issued (unlike the CR1/IR1 where the vaccinations have to be complete at medical)

K1 visa holders have to adjust their status once in the USA and married, it is during this process the vaccination records are required - all that said I would strongly recommend getting them all done before the medical, getting it completed in the USA can be both costly and time consuming :)

Okay, so for the AOS what are the required vaccines?

  7. Why do some people always assume we are just lazy and haven't read the guides? Most of us DO, but each case is different and things change.

You cannot ask someone who is asking about something to change the guides, because they don't know for sure. That's why they're asking. haha.

    :goofy:

I wanted to say that, but I thought it wasn't worth it because people might take it the wrong way and I'm not trying to start an argument.

But I 100% agree with you, this is a forum where we are free to open topics if we have inquiries, if the admins don't think they're relevant they can let us know and delete or close them. I said that some information are dated, as you can see that the topic's date and replies are from 5-6 even 10 years ago and even if I don't know if those rules have changed, I WANT and HAVE to make sure because this is a complicated process and we should be here to help each other, not to point out silly things like reading the guides, which I'm sure everyone does (considering the guides are the reason I found out about this forum).

Please do try to be helpful and understanding because we're all on the same boat and we are all entitled to ask clarification where needed without other users stating the obvious and making us feel like we're asking stupid or obvious questions.

Also, not everyone is in their 30s-40s and this might be their first experience with this amount of bureaucracy and paperwork (like myself, given I'm 24 and I never had to deal with this much hassle) so it can definitely be an overwhelming experience and support is always appreciated, regardless of where is coming from.

    Have a lovely day everyone!

  8. You were asking about the sequence of events after POE, the sequence noted in the Flowchart is still valid. Hence the rationale for my recommendation.

BTW, If it is dated, please be a good forum member, and mention it in a post in the Site Discussion, Updates Forum. The forum administrator would like to know and correct it. Help keep the site current, this is a DIY forum.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

As you can see, out of four of my questions only one could've been answered by the flowchart, and even still, I wanted clarification.

Thank you for your help and wishes

  9. :guides: easily accessible at the top of the forum page. You will be just about done with the K1 stuff, take a look at the K1 Flowchart: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow

With all due respect, I have read that and as it turns out, there have been changes.

This is a great place to gather infos, but some of them are not up to date. Trust me, I HAVE READ ALL THE GUIDES, I only create a topic if I need more clarification.

  10. My then fiance applied for his social security number 2 weeks fter arriving in the USA and prior to our wedding.

He took his original birth certificate (make sure you bring one with you, as you will not get the one you gave the embassy back), his passport with visa in it, and his I-94. We obtained the forms at the SS office to fill out. They called us up to the window and the process took about 5 minutes. He received his card a week later.

This topic has been covered many times here on VJ. You can use the search tool to see those other threads.

    Thank you

  11. No US state requires you to have an SSN before you can obtain a marriage licence, but if you have an SSN you are obligated by federal law to provide it at the time you make the application.

You can and should apply for an SSN immediately after entering. You used to have to wait a short period to be properly entered into the system, but now that I-94s are electronic you no longer have to do so.

Take your passport, a certified copy of your birth certificate, a printout of your I-94, and a completed SS-5 (application for an SSN) to your nearest SSA office, and you should receive your SSN in the mail within 10-14 days.

You will be able to print out your I-94 from this site following PoE: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/recent-search

Thank you SO SO SO SO much. This clarifies everything for me :)

  12. Hi guys,

I hope you can help me as I just need some clarifications on how to proceed once I get to the US. I am the beneficiary, my fiance is the american citizen.

I will be entering the US on 3rd February and I'm slightly confused with the chronological order of some of the things we have to file for, I'm trying to make a list of everything we need and mostly WHEN does everything have to be filed.

    So below are my questions:

    - When arriving to New York, do I need to apply for an SSN number before applying for a marriage licence or I can apply for an SSN after we get married?

    - How long after I enter the US should I apply for an SSN? I read somewhere that it isn't advised to do so straight away, but wait a couple of weeks.

    - Do I just need my passport and my i-94 form to get an SSN?

    - Where do I get my i-94? Is it given to me at the POE or do I have to download from the DHS website?

These questions might be stupid to some, but I just need some help to understand this fully so I hope you can take the time to give me some answers.

    Thank you

  13. I second what everyone up there ^^^^ is saying - Get them done before, or at the medical in Knightsbridge. I too made the mistake of going to my GP for the outstanding one that could be waived for K1, but was required for AOS, AFTER my medical, and brought an updated vaccination record from my GP with me to the US when I moved thinking that I'd been really clever and saved myself the 35GBP Knightsbridge were charging.

It wasn't until I came on here to check through the contents of my AOS packet that I was about to post, that I realised that that wasn't good enough. D:

I ended up paying $300 for 2 appointments with a Civil Surgeon here in the US to transcribe my vaccination records and insist i had a blood test for syphallis and a skin test for TB...

    Save yourself the hassle.

Which are the Vaccines required by AOS but waiver for K1?
