  1. Basic dictionary definition; asylee vs refugee. refugees apply at embassies, asylum seekers apply while they are already here.

Some official numbers from USCIS https://www.dhs.gov/immigration-statistics/refugees-asylees

    2016 report https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/Refugees_Asylees_2016_0.pdf

Basically US accepts significantly higher number of refugees (85K) than granting asylums (12K). Top countries for 2016: refugees came from Congo, Burma, Syria, and Iraq around 10-15K each; whereas asylums granted to El Salvador, Guatemala, and China around 1300-1400 each.

Here are some numbers from currently pending asylum cases (March 2018) https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Outreach/Notes from Previous Engagements/PED_AsylumOfficeWorkloadMarch2018.pdf

Currently over 300K asylum applications still pending. That's a lot of people to fit in the 12K green cards/year.

  2. I've been to San Francisco for four or five times since 2006. My last visit was for a conference in Feb '16 for two days. Conference venue was near Union Sq, I also stayed in downtown. I noticed a big change in number of homeless as well. We were having lunch at a small restaurant and a homeless dude came in and asked for money from each table. He definitely looked like he was on something. God knows if he was carrying a knife or anything else. I've never had an experience like that in the US. Felt very uncomfortable. I was surprised restaurant owners were indifferent, no one asked him to leave. Maybe they were also scared to say something.

I was back at the valley April '17. Didn't go to SF, stayed near Sunnyvale-Mountain View area. I didn't notice any homeless there. Maybe it's just a downtown SF problem.

  3. I don't know what other countries have it but in Turkey they have mandatory working requirements for doctors and dentists right after they finish school. I believe it is for 1.5-2 years. They usually send them to eastern part of the country where they have difficulty attracting talent. Maybe US could do a similar thing, the gov't either at state or federal level could waive some part of student loan if they decide to work in these communities for a while. They already do this for nursing, it is called NURSE Corps loan repayment program. https://bhw.hrsa.gov/loansscholarships/nursecorps/lrp

I was just reading your timeline.. I saw where you said you went for the first interview.. Did you have to do the second interview?

I am just curious... And when you say first interview, do you mean the N-400 Interview?

Yes, N400 interview. I didn't do an interview for the ROC. It was a mistake on their part that they scheduled two N400 interviews. I gave details of that story here.

  5. Rockets deserved to lose. You can't miss 27 consecutive 3-pointers at your home court and expect to win. Chris Paul's injury cost them the series. Regular season MVP once again turned out to be a G-league role player when it he was needed the most.

Cavs-Warriors 4th time in a row. Just boring. Spurs swept Lebron in 2007 and I expect the Warriors do the same this year.

  6. Houston was really lucky last night. James Harden shot 0-11 from deep. Now that Chris Paul is uncertain to play the rest of the series, Mr. Beard really needs to step up and earn those MVP chants.

As for GSW, they are shooting themselves in the foot. So many unforced turnovers, no ball movement, KD trying to be the hero with iso-plays. They are in trouble.

I hope we would see a Rockets-Celtics final.

  7. Finally a game worth watching. Reminded me of the Game 7 of the 2016 finals, dubs looked like they were going to have an easy win but they ran out of gas on 4Q. Lots of missed shots and layups.

Houston has a legit shot to beat warriors if they could win at home next game. It's time for the beard to really shine.

On my short list, just in my general area, King Soopers, Safeway, Target, Walmart, Office Max, Whole Foods, Burger King, Lowe's, Wendy's, Home Depot and Pet Smart don't ask if you are a customer when you use the restroom. I'm sure there are a lot more than that. I'm not sure adding Starbucks to the list changes anything.

Maybe it's just me, but personally I'd rather have people using restrooms than crapping on the street.

Have you seen the Tim Hortons incident?
