  1. Hi all - I am new to this amazing forum, and this is my first post. I tried looking for similar topics, and while there are some overlaps, I could not find anything that discusses our dilemmas.

I happen to be one of the winners of the DV lottery. We are a family of 4, kids are 13 and 11. We all speak English fairly well, wife and I have bachelor degrees and I have 15+ years of experience in leading MNCs. We are originally from SE Europe, and I currently work in Nigeria, (we are all here, kids go to the American School). I have also lived in SE Asia for 6 years. My brother (US citizen) lives in upstate NY. We can also bring in 100K USD, and perhaps some 200K-250K more once we sell some properties back home.

    Our strategy is two-fold:

cost control (so moving into relatively cheaper cities, but not compromising safety and quality of education) and

revenue generation (i.e. bigger cities, i.e. more jobs available in our industries, though we wouldn't shy away from any kind of work, esp. in the early days)

    We are looking at;

    Rochester and

Syracuse, NY (brother & his family are there, and COL is (very) cheap). Economy is so-so, as is the weather. Kind of similar to where we come from.

Chicago area (big job market, solid balance between cost and potential earnings)

Charlotte (as above, perhaps slightly smaller, affordable real estate, + like the weather)

Atlanta area (again, big job market, OK weather)

Austin (Not too expensive, some good schools, apparently good QOL)

    Plano (as above)

Seattle (it looks like it's not going to work - rent / properties are just too expensive, though would love to move there).

We are combing through city-data and other sources we find useful - rent, trulia, salary.com, monster etc.

Securing a job prior to arrival would be great, one obvious issue is that I don't have my SSN yet, so potential employer would need to be open minded and willing to risk a bit (and I'd need to reassure them that it's all legit).

Our location choices are guided by

Cost of living (rent at first, then buy a house/apt)

    Safety

Quality of (public) schools (Middle and High)

Employment opportunities (I am struggling how to quantify this - I am looking at salaries, number of job openings, unemployment rates)

Relatives (only in the short run)

    Climate

    Commuting times

Overall QOL (can be very subjective)

Eliminatory factors are cost of living and safety.

Just curious what do you think of this plan, and if you are (considering) moving, what are your thoughts and what do you factor in. What else would you look at, both in terms of potential locations, as well as factors to consider.

one can excel anywhere in this country. that is the beauty of America.

  2. Hello

I wanted to ask you guys if anyone of you ever received a visit from USCIS people to check if you live together and if it's a normal procedure after you get married. We're leaving together and I'm curious about this. Thank you!

Not me personally, but i know it happened to at least two couples that i know very well. The practice is more prevalent on the West coast and the South.

  3. I had an job interview around 3 weeks ago and completed a brunch of assessment tests and I received an offer today. I am wondering If I should just take it or should wait for another opportunity.

I understand that as a new immigrant, we always start with lower salary but I didnt expect be almost 60% lower than what I used to earn. Can anyone share your view with me if you were me.

what is your skill set ? nice question to ask through the web btw.

  4. I read somewhere on here that some people are able to get an EAD really quick...how is this done? Also, my fiance hates not being able to work so is it possible she applies for her EAD after her K1 is issued and just continue to work in her native country while its being processed or must she be on US soil?

The usual time frame is 90 days. Most of the applicants gets it in between 60-90 days. i have known some applicants who have sneaked in a request for expedition of the application which was actually accepted which enabled them to get the right to work and the travel parole in first two months after the application was filed.i myself did it and got it in 60-90 days if i remember it. i now believe it was a waste of money as i became a resident after few months of getting the EAD But my circumstances might have been different than you or someone else for that matter.

  5. Our situation was identical to yours. same distance, same reason for the move. i was the beneficiary and now a proud american.our process went timely and smooth. the proofs that goes along with 751 are pretty much the same. the distance in such a situation is a non issue especially when the relationship is genuine.send new pics, new taxes,co mingled finances, assets and some more affidavits(although regarded poor piece of evidence). you guys will be okay. by the way my local office was des moines as well and that is where i was interviewed for N400. good luck to you guys.

  6. I was trying to double check my case status just to make sure evrything was ok, and I entered my n400 receipt number in a fraudulent website! I was the citizenship.info. Only later did I see that this wasn't the uscis official website. Of course I didn't get any info from them, but I think they collected the number and my email address and full name.

    My oath is tomorrow morning!

Can they do something with just this information? I am mostly worried about them selling it to a third party and identity fraud.

I looked them up and saw that people were complaining that the site was charging them for forms which they should have accessed for free but that's about it. I didn't see identity fraud.

Also, what should I do now (if anything)?

    Thanks!

come on bird. chill. congratulations to you for becoming an american.

  7. Hi,

I recently tried to log in to my USCIS account to view the progress of my n400 and it just takes me to a site that has no info whatsoever about my case, right after I log in with the one-time password. It's like a menu for an open website with general info about USCIS processes.

I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem, and/or any info on how to be able to view case status again. I tried navigating the menu but there is literally nothing where I can see that it is connected to my account.

    Thanks in advance!

    -Sal

Give it sometime man, like a couple of weeks. you shall start seeing something.

  8. Hello,

I am a US Citizen, and I would like to bring my mom to visit me here in US. She has never been to US. Can you please advise me of the correct paperwork I need to send her (or she will need from me)? Also if possible, what she needs as well to have a good chance of getting a visa.

    Thank you

The answers provided to you by the fellows here are correct. However, each one of them will send their relatives/potential B2 applicants with bunch of documents just to be on the safer side.it is rightly mentioned somewhere here that visa officer might not even look at the documents but what if ? and yes they do sometimes. it is a pure fluke for a B2 applicant to get a B2 especially when he/she comes from a high fraud country. if a country requires a visa to a visit the US,it is a high fraud country as per the Govt. sending the following will be no harm.

    1) pay stubs for the last 3 months

    2) last six bank statements or a letter from a bank with sufficient funds (10k or more) although there is no hard and fast rule

    3) write your mother a invitation letter, be specific and mention that you will take care of her medical, food and boarding.(you can find templates online)

    4) Have your employer write a letter confirming your employment, salary and job title etc. have them address the local US embassy where your mother will go for the interview.

    5) Form I-134 is not mandatory but is the only official form that you can send to your mom. it is the affidavit of support

    6) Of course your proof of US citizenship.

More suggestions/experience - A US citizen bringing a close/immediate relative on B2 is a red flag because it can be used to circumvent some clauses. people still get successful a lot of times.i hope it will work out right for you guys. Good luck to you.

  9. So im hoping this is the right place I haven't been on VJ since my wife got her GC in 2011, but this site helped then and im hoping it will help now. So the deal is my brother in law seems to have fallen hard for a girl in the states (hes German) and he was enrolled in school here and they started dating. The school thing didn't work out for him so he went home. about 6 weeks ago i think he came over to the states to talk to her about the future and they decided that they wanted to live together before applying for a k1. Which after going through that process myself its a smart idea.

So he had a 6 month tourist visa and he was going come and hang out with her to see if they could even live together, today he got denied entry upon arrival in Chicago and during their interrogation they found out he misled them because he didn't say he was coming to stay with his girlfriend (because they would of denied him for that) so he said he was visiting a friend. but then they found paper work in his luggage about the k1 and other documents that may lead a investigator to believe that his intent was to stay in the states, which it wasn't he was just trying to be prepared for his GF.

So now he's on his way home and Im trying to figure out what his options are. is there a wavier or an appeals process to help him out.

He was probably too honest about his intentions and the CBP did not like it.

  10. Hello everyone (:

My husband's visa interview is in about a week at the Mumbai consulate and we're super nervous! I think our relationship may bring up some red flags for the following reasons, and I just want to help my hubby prepare for them as best as possible. 1. We married our first time meeting. We talked for 2 years before I came to India to meet my husband in person, and we got married the next month. I've heard this may bring up a red flag. Another problem is my husband has been denied for a visa before, a student visa. He was unable at the time to prove his ties to India, so we're also worried about that. The last is he doesn't currently have a job. His family wanted him to visit them for a month in another state before he leaves for the US, so he didn't really have a choice but to quit. What's the best way we can prepare for this? What questions might they ask? Does this give us less of a chance of getting a visa?

    Thank you for your time!

i hear you, good news is that you guys going to be okay.

  11. Hello please I will like tips on how to go about inviting my mum to the US.... my wife is having our baby soon... I am a green card holder while my wife is a citizen.... we wanna know how to go about inviting my mum from Nigeria

there is no hard and fast rule for a B2 for a person from a high fraud country(as per USCIS). its purely on the VO's discretion or by fluke as far as the applicant is concerned. yes, the applicant has to prove enough ties to the native country. stable job, previous travel, property owned and siblings or parents to take care of. are some of the examples but see even if an applicant satisfies this. there is no guarantee for B2. the process is shabby.good luck to you.

  12. Hi!

  13. My b1/b2 visa was cancelled due to working in the us. I recently got engaged and would like to apply for a k1 visa. What are the chances of me getting the k1? Or is it best to apply for a b1 again? My mother in law is sick with cancer and I was her carer, is this worth mentioning? Help!

you are asking for answers that you only want to hear. i personally believe you will still be able to fulfill the american dream. go ahead with K1. it is the longer and more expensive route but yeah i am sure they will let you in.

  14. i think this can be sorted out without causing any trouble. this can be explained citing as a genuine mistake. registering for vote (by mistake) is not a big of a deal compared to if one have actually practiced it. this is a burning issue in south west where this is very prevalent. talk to the local civil administration (county clerk's office) to have this cancelled and get something in writing. should not be a big of a deal.good luck to you.

  15. Can't have a definitive answer. What if you start late from the place of origin ? some of the new immigrants gets processed faster than the others. 4 hours and 20 minutes seems enough provided everything goes smooth. Also, i have heard some of the major Airports have special kiosks for newly landing immigrants. Atlanta's is a huge one i am sure they will have a dedicated kiosks. Sorry for not being able to give you the answer you were looking for. what will be your final destination ?

  16. Two major qualifiers for DCF,

    1) The USC should either be serving in US army, navy or airforce and be stationed outside the US.

    2) The USC petitioner filing for a (spouse, parent and i am not 100% on K1) must be residing in the foreign country on a long stay(not a few days tourist visa) where he/she intends to apply.

also, not all US missions abroad allows DCF. you will have to check with the one that falls under you. most of them are pretty prompt and will send you an reply over the email or check local US embassy web.

  17. I live in abroad. I'm not immigrant in US. My question is:

It will be the same person The agent section in DS-261 form and AOS sponsor? or It can be ordinary person as me or my father?

your question is unclear. please clarify again. However, the agent can either be the petitioner, beneficiary or any representative (attorney, well wisher etc) assigned .
