  1. Hey guys, I passed my naturalization interview in NYC a week ago and it was a very pleasant experience - that day I also found out that I passed my board exams so I was pretty much on cloud 9! 🤩

So, this might be a silly question but I mentioned to the officer that I wanted to add a name that I forgot to put on the other names used part of the application. She did it for me and had me sign the changes at the end. Now I'm wondering if that's the name that will appear on my naturalization certificate (because I don't want that and I did not request for a name change). I somehow feel like I can't trust myself because I truly felt like I was floating in happiness that day. 😂

I have my oath ceremony coming up in a few weeks. Should my name on the certificate be different than what I want, can I have it corrected right then and there? Anyone with experience with this?

    Thank you so much! 😄

  2. Hello everyone, just wanted to give an update here: I successfully passed my citizenship interview on May 27, 2021 at the NY Field Office (Federal Plaza)! Here's my timeline:

    Submitted N400 - July 2020
    - nothing for 7 months -
    Biometrics Scheduled - February 2021
    Biometrics Appointment - March 2021
    Interview Scheduled - April 2021
    Interview Appointment - May 2021
    Oath Ceremony - June 2021

The interview went smoothly - I had a very pleasant and nice officer; first it was the civics test then the reading and lastly the writing test. Afterward, she asked me questions about my application (family, school, etc) as well as the Yes/No questions in Part 12 of the application. I let her know that I missed to mention an alias and she added it. I also clarified taxes and she said not to worry if you made below the threshold (I told her everything's up to date and that I do not owe any money). I brought all the documents I could think of but she only asked for my passport and my green card.

    Overall, great experience!

Good luck to everyone in this journey! I'm wishing you all the best! :)
  3. Hello guys, I have my naturalization interview coming up next month. When I submitted the form N400, in the part where it asks for all names used, I forgot to include one. Back in my home country, my name works in this fashion: 2 first names followed by my mom's maiden last name and followed by my dad's last name. I found one ID (NY State Benefits Card for Medicaid as well as the insurance card - both of which I never used) only shows my 2nd first name and last name. Aside from that, all my cards and all my records including my green card and state ID bear my full name 2 first names + mom's maiden last name, or its initial + dad's last name.

During my Biometrics appointment, I wrote down the name I forgot to include in the N400 form in the other names used on the applicant worksheet provided (which they never took and only returned to me).

I would assume that they run all the combinations of the name with the fingerprints when they do the background check prior to scheduling the interview. Must I bring this up during my naturalization interview? And if so, will it cause any delays? Anyone with this experience who can share - I'd appreciate it a lot. Thank you!

  4. Hi guys, I have a question for NYC filers who have had their interview already. Did you receive approval on the same day? Someone on Reddit said they were not approved on the spot and they received the decision the following day via email and that this seems to be a protocol now that they don't inform you of the decision and that you have to wait for it. If you have your interview coming up (mine is on May 27th), I would appreciate it if you could share your experience. I'll do the same once I'm all done. Thank you and stay safe everyone! :)

I was in the same situation as you. When I went to the interview (and in my application) due to space, I omitted to put one because it didn't fit. When you go through the interview, after the civics and reading/writing tests they go through your n400 application and look at your passport. They go from start to bottom. He mentioned my name as written on my application. I said "correct". Then he told me so what is XYZ then? (XYZ is my second first name that I never use really). He took that information from my file on the computer he was reading from. The only place he could have known of that is from my initial application more than a decade ago for the GC. And also my old passport actually shows my full name. So he changed the name from my application to add the second first name to it. At the end when we went through all the questions including the Yes No questions, he printed out the changes made to my application. In my case it was just the addition of my second first name and had me sign it to make sure that I was aware that he changed something on my application.

He said that unless I chose to have a name change, it has to be included on my form. A name change would delay things, and my intent wasn't to change my name anyway. Bottom line is, the official name that you must have on your application is the official FULL name on your birth certificate, initial GC application and supposed to be the same as what is on your old country passport. Whatever is on those official documents should be your whole full name. You can tell him that at the interview if you didn't include one on the application. It didn't delay anything in my case. I got the congratulations letter after the interview and got the oath scheduled only 3 or 4 days later. But maybe depending on the "name" and the country you are from it could cause a delay, if the FBI name checks were made with not your full name. But as I said I wouldn't worry too much, because I am sure they already know everything about an applicant based on their A-number which has all the initial information from your GC application. If all your worries is that bank documents, rent/lease... only show two names, then that isn't an issue to worry about. Just explain that if asked.

Just make sure that at the time you leave the interview they clearly know you as the person with your two first names and your last name. Otherwise once they print your certificate for the oath if you accept it, then that second first name is officially not yours anymore and you would have to go through the courts to get a name change.

I hope I was thorough enough.

    Hello there,

Thank you very much for your response! This is indeed very thorough and I appreciate it a lot. The name on my birth certificate as well as my green card match and I have provided that in the form N-400. I merely just forgot to mention that one of my documents I have from the state only printed my second first name and last name. Thank you so much again! :)

  9. Has anyone had an experience with adding a name to the other names used section of the N400 during the interview? I have 2 first names and recently learned that one of my old documents (New York State Benefit Card) only show my second first name and my last name. I know I provided them with my full name but that's what's printed. Is it ok to let the officer know during the interview and also will it cause delays? What's your experience? Thanks!

I think you would be fine. I suggest you explain the situation to the officer. I had my interview today and it turned out I didn't see and didn't answer 3 questions on the online form. The officer told me so and just asked me to answer them at the interview with the rest of the questions. At the end of the interview, at an ipad, they show you which edits they changed to your application per your new responses at the interview and ask you to sign that you accept those changes and these are correct. Good luck!

Thank you so much! I appreciate you sharing your experience! Congratulations! :)

  11. Hello, N400 Part 12, Question 7A asks if I have ever failed to file tax returns since becoming a lawful permanent resident. I answered "NO" as I understood this as failing to file when required which I never did. I came in October 2015 and did not start working until February 2016. I was claimed by my dad as a dependent on his 2015 tax returns and in 2019 I was a full-time student, not making any income. Upon doing research and learning from other's experiences, I'm afraid I might have answered the question incorrectly. In an attempt to correct this mistake, I sent my 1040 tax return forms for 2015 and 2019 to the IRS (I owe $0) as well as New York State (turns out I owe them and immediately settled it by card payment which would mean I answered Part 12, Question 6 if I owe taxes incorrectly at the time of filing) last week. When the time of my interview comes and I have the tax return transcripts for tax years 2015 and 2019 as well as a letter stating that I paid my taxes from the state, my answers on the form would be correct. Should I tell the officer that I filed my tax returns and made the corrections after filing? Will this be ok? Thank you!
