My parents are flying from Dublin to Chicago to DFW next Wednesday. What are the very last minute things that they need to be doing that we may have forgotten about?

Also they are bringing their 2 cats and I can't get a straight answer about where the cats will go in Chicago. They will fly cargo of course but has anyone ever flown animals through Chicago recently? did you claim them in the airport or in the cargo building? They have a few hours in between flights but didn't want to hang out at the airport and waste time waiting if the cats were just going to be sent directly to cargo which is where they need to go to regardless to get on the DFW flight. One person said they will go to cargo directly and another said that they will come out as excess baggage and that my parents had to get a cab to the cargo building and check them in for the DFW flight.

The logistics of this are crazy planning from both their side and my side!

They are handing over their house keys today and are staying in a cottage until next week and their container was shipped two weeks ago, so all that was taken care of at least.

Date of entry for my parents will be October 1st 2014. Good luck to everyone who is going through this process. If you think submitting the documents was a nightmare, just wait until you get to the logistics of actually making the move!

up to 6 months? Geeze! Things have changed since I came to the US. I think mine took maybe 3 weeks at the most.

What sort of time frame is it taking for the green card to arrive after the POE? My parents are paying in advance of course this week and will be making the move in September.

Update: Passports were ready for pick up on june 26th, so from their date of interview, that was 15 days. I would definitely advise to plan accordingly to anyone who is booking flights!

This is a great thread, thanks for mentioning the British Emporium in Dallas, TX. I just happen to be going there for work at the end of this week and shall definitely be making a stop there, and Ikea (i'm half Swedish).

I have been living in Arkansas 16 months now. I have to say that overall I prefer living here than in England. The weather is so good and I can spend so much time outdoors hiking, swimming, biking, I feel much healthier because of it. I also got really lucky and found a great job the day my employment authorization arrived in the mail and they are like family to me which has helped a lot.

I really miss Sky news here. The quality of the news is pretty bad so I keep up to date with whats going on in the world on the sky news website. I will try that live streaming thing for sure.

I'm lucky that my family come and visit about every 3 months. They usually bring orange squash, M & S tea, M & S chocolate biscuits, neurofen plus (its the only thing that works on headaches for me) so I make out a list for each visit.

There are some specialty stores that carry British products around here. I also go to Aldi regularly and get decent chocolate and cheese from there for much cheaper than the specialty stores. Its a shame they don't have marks and spencers here though. It was such a great place to get prepared food that you just pop in the oven after a long day at work. I find myself cooking from scratch a lot now because I gained about 15 pounds the first year eating out so much!

The British Emporium is actually in Grapevine, Texas It is good for buying those things that you really just can't live without, but be aware that it is very pricey. They are extremely proud of their products! As a side note, watch the expiration dates on some of the shelved products too (speaking from experience, out of date monster munch are really gross )

I believe it is counted by working days. So 10 working days/2 weeks is going into what I would call overdue compared to most. Have you checked the CEAC search to see if the status says "issued" yet?

Yes - it has shown issued since 1 day post interview. I am wondering if they should call the courier service?

My parents interview in London was 2 weeks ago and they still haven't got their passports back - is this a normal time frame? I was under the impression that it would be 7-10 days?

She should accept the promotion and look after number "one" - that would be herself. The visa process is on average a year start to finish. Even if she has to give notice, she will likely be able to negotiate on a good faith basis until she immigrates to the US. Most bosses do not want he employee at the job to work the full notice, unless they will be really struggling for a replacement in the interim.

In a nutshell until she has that piece of paper in her hand, she should not do anything irrational.

Hi collie one question when u got your case completed, did u call NVC ? or did u receive an mail on april 24th saying that your case was completed? And what day did u receive the email for you appointment?

I had called regarding another matter and was told the case was complete. All details are in my signature/timeline for interview etc.

Approved!!! My husband was approved this morning. He said he has too much paperwork. They didn't take our 2013 tax info and it was easier than he expected!

They asked him how we met and when we got married.

I have to admit that I am now unsure as to the steps after the interview has been completed, so I have questions . My parents had their interview yesterday in London and were approved, but when will they be notified when their passport is ready to pick up? When do they actually pay the Green-card fee? Will they get the sealed envelope back with the passport or how does that work? Their CEAC status shows Administrative processing, which I know from reading

other posts is normal, but how long on average does it take to change to "issued" or whatever it is supposed to say?

I was able to predict the next steps when everything was state-side but now that its in the UK, I know nothing! One last question and I should know this but I'm uncertain, but do they get a 2 year or a 10 year green card?

I am a UKC by birth and gained US citizenship in September 2013 after 3 years in the US (got married then moved to the USA)

My parents in the UK will be retiring soon and miss their only grandchildren greatly.

I know there are lots of things to consider and tax implications but is the process really as simple as filing I-130 in London, going through the appropriate checks and process, moving to the USA, satisfying residency requirement and then applying for us citizenship?

^^^I know I have generalized and made it sound like a breeze (which it is not) but the mere fact that I am now a US Citizen really can enable them to receive it as long as they meet the requirements?

Its not quite as easy as just that, but if you are willing to file all the paperwork and pay the fees then it is possible. My parents were in the same situation as yours and wanted to be close to their grandchildren, so we filed and completed the process. From start to finish, it took 15 months, but it could take less or more time depending on what backlog gets created at which center.

Yes, they took their passports and the CEAC status shows that they are in administrative processing as of today, so it will probably be a week or so before they have their passports mailed back to them with the visa in them.

My Mum was also asked a trick question asking if she had been to Colorado before as there was someone there with her maiden name. Weird question to ask but she answered no and told the immigration person that you can't catch me out, lol!
