  1. Hi guys we just applied for SSN again today in different branch and we got it. Yay thank God! They just put my maiden name since it's on my I-94 even I put my married name on the application sheet. I guess its just depends on the officers if they know what theyre doing and know the rules. Lol

My question is when can I change my married name? After we submit the AOS? Or after they approved our AOS?

  2. The SSN officer is wrong. Yes the K-1 is invalid once you clear immigration at your POE. The I-94, which is created during processing through immigration, allows you 90 days to fulfill your obligation to get married. Then, you are in "limbo basically" till your GC is approved. But, by the activity of submitting your AOS package covers you for immigration till your GC arrives.

The SSN officer is wrong on the next point. You are eligible to receive a SSN before your GC/EAD arrives. Read what you need at my website here.

You do have to wait one or two weeks to make sure that your name is already on the SAVE database as the SS will use that to verify your status.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Greenbaum,

We actually brought all the documents we need to apply for a SSN but they insisted that they wont give me unless I'll get the authorization card from the immigration.

The officer told me that my K-1 Visa expired already since I already got married. They didnt even care about my I-94.

My question is do we need to submit our AOS first before we can get SSN?

  3. Hey guys, just checking in quickly - about the SSN. Issam and I arrived in the states on the 17th of June, married the morning of the 26th and got the SSN that afternoon. He received his card about 10 days later. The only pain in the neck was the hour wait at the SS administration, lol.

    nancyandissam,

I got a question, did you show them or tell them that you guys just got married? Did you show any marriage certificate? Or did you tell them it is still a fiancée? even you guys got married that morning?

  4. Edit: I just read this site you provided me. it discussed how to get ss card when you're already married...

    thespoons,

Actually, the SSN officer told me that your K-1 is not valid anymore because we already got married. They said we should have applied before we got married. They didn't even use the I-94 even our marriage certificate. I guess we just have to file for the AOS and once we get our EAD then we will reapply for the SSN.

  5. Hi guys,

I have some questions regarding SSN and AOS

My husband and I went to SSN today to apply for a number, but they didn't give me, even I showed them my passport, I-94 and marriage certificate. They told us to go to immigration to report our marriage first and get the authorization card and come back to apply for SSN. So that means we have to file for AOS first and we have to wait for the Employment Authorization Document before we apply for SSN?

The Authorization Card they were talking about is the Employment Authorization Document?

We went to the bank today to put my name for a joint account with my husband and they were asking for an ID with my US address on it, but I didn't have anything to show since I don't have any US Id's yet. They just put me as the beneficiary of my husband.

We're thinking, what if the bank cant put me to joint account with my husband and only as beneficiary. Can we just still use it as one of our evidences?

I hope somebody can help us about this.. Thanks in advance.

  6. Here's the link. Very important to know. I shouldve known last june...

    Thespoons,

Thank you so much, even though we can't get the ID before the AOS it's ok with us. What more important is we will have all the proper documentation regarding the AOS. By the way I just read about this regarding our concern about the medical. This might help.

    http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/101202-faqs-forms-i-693-and-ds-3025/

We already had the vaccination from St Lukes and every corner (Mrs Presson, Greenbaum and that link) specifies that we only need the DS-3025 to include It in the I-485 when applying for the AOS. As long as they said that the St Luke's medical is still within a year up to filing of AOS is valid. So please please also read about it and let me know about your thoughts.

  7. Oh good! How long did it take again?

As for the state id / dmv id you need to do it asap as they require at least 60 days validity on the visa (i read this somewhere here on vj).

You're almost done with the aos packet yay! :)

My F and i are just doing research for now since the wedding is going to happen next week. Were planning on submitting the marraige certificate ourselves at the county office if they will let us so we dont need to wait long for the certified copies. :)

    Thespoons,

I just went there in the courthouse and get it myself. It is $15 per copy of marriage certificate. If I will wait for the mail I don't know how long will it take. After the wedding, I am required to apply for a marriage certificate after 10 working days. But even before the 10th day try asking them If you can get a copy right away. Just go in person so there is no delay. I don't know about the 50 day validity of the DMV but can you send the link where you read it?

  8. Box 7 of Part 3 should be the number of new family members the USC is sponsoring. So if it's just the foreign-born new spouse, the answer is 1. Yes, if it's just the two of you, the household size is two. However, in Part 5, box 1 should have "1" and box 3 should be blank. The boxes 2 through 8 are people that are NOT being sponsored on this form.

    No, K-1 applicant's don't complete the Form DS-260. We do the DS-160.

I think as long as you send them the official name change documents from the court, you don't need to change your passport before AOS. Your passport will need to be updated for foreign travel, but doesn't ever need to be changed if you won't use it again for it's official purpose. I haven't come across anything that says you need to have a foreign passport updated during the immigration process. I know we will update my fiance's passport when he gets here because he doesn't have a last name at this time. When we send in his AOS, he will have a changed name, so I've looked into this scenario. But let me know if you find something different!

    Hello Amhara,

Oh ok I get it now because on Part 3 no 1 is also counted as 1 so on number 7 total is 1. Ok this form was so confusing for me earlier. Thank you for enlighten me.

  9. Thespoons,

Hello, I had my wedding in July 17. after 10 days it require me in CA to apply for the marriage certificate. I downloaded the form online and filled it up. Mailed it to them on 7/29/15. They said it takes 3 to 5 days to process so hopefully I can get it by next week. At the same time I am starting to fill up all the forms for AOS application while waiting for the marriage cert. What are you confused of the documents for filing the AOS? I think the one more confusing is the I-864 application which is the Affidafit of support. I have a question on Part 3. Information on immigrants you are petitioning. Question no 1. I am sponsoring the principal immigrant named in part 2 so my answer is YES. after that Family Member from 1 to 5 are all N/A. then question no 7. Enter the total number of immigrants you are sponsoring on this form from Items 1 through 6 so my answer is 0 right? Then on Part 5. Sponsor's household size. I put a 1 on Question no. 2 which is myself and 1 on no Question no 3 which is "If you are currently married, enter "1" for your spouse" so on Question no 8. "Add together lines 1-7 and enter the number here. Household size: " I put 2 right? I don't know if you are already on that part.
