spareows reacted to gwenstar in Getting Welfare Benefits While an Immigrant-Not a Public Charge
That is really interesting. I know that different federal/state programs are funded differently - for instance welfare is completely different than section 8 housing. I work with public and low income housing. I know that It is not an issue for immigrants to receive housing benefits - as long as the protocol is followed. However, defrauding the housing program would be something reported in regards to immigrant status.
I am not familiar with the different circumstances with a status of refugee immigrant, but I know that they can be eligible to receive housing benefits, SSI, TANF, and Public Assistance (welfare) without any problem.
Anyhow - thanks for this post! It makes me want to do some more research - I might find some info that could useful to some of the tenants I work with. I would be interested to hear more of your story.... if you want to share just send me a message.

Filed mid January. Got moved to TSC on 6/21. Making progress slowly but surely. Be prepared for a long and frustrating wait.
Haha. It's sad but we just have to laugh and take it in. We decided to blow the $600 on a plane ticket and visit each other this weekend to celebrate. Life's too short and I'm getting sick of being away from him.
Fingers crossed yours comes through soon. I'm sure it'll be here soon!! Why isn't this easier!?!?!

If you're happy to wait a year then by all means go for it. I find that if you've waited that long without contacting someone then it's really your own fault nothing got done sooner. Still, I don't feel bad about contacting people elected to help me and represent me. I'm an American citizen, I vote, I get to bug them. That's their job, it's what they're there for. Calling to check on why there is a huge backlog isn't something that is going to put a stand still on their day. Like I said before, I wasn't asking for any type of special treatment, I was calling to figure out if they had any idea why the VSC files were being so delayed. Just because people have waited that long doesn't make it right. Just because this is the system doesn't mean it's not broken. I'd rather be proactive then wait a year with nothing to show for it.

Spareows, welcome to the waiting game of USCIS and US Gov't. Everytime I would call USCIS and speak to a Tier 2 agent regarding my AOS application it was a different answer from the that I got before. I learned that I had to develop a really thick skin when dealing with these people. Some where rude and some were not. Just luck of the draw of who I spoke to on the phone.

This is the heart of the matter. Complicating the situation is that the USCIS has long had the reputation of being "our very worst Federal agency" -- this from a Congressional staffer (2008).
Here's an assumption that's just as valid as others of above: Sen. Cruz's staffer might have contacted USCIS multiple times already during the day or week and been blown off, either rudely or by having hit a brick wall herself.
When I met Sen.-to-be Cruz before his election, I told him my story, in brief: On the advice of a huge law firm "with connections," I called then-Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's chief staffer to try to discuss our immigration challenges. After no luck all day, I finally reached the woman, who cut me off with "The Senator has far more important things to do than to concern herself with one person's K-1 application." I was shocked enough that I could say nothing before I was hung up on.
I asked Sen.-to-be Cruz, "Will you please ensure that your constituent services' representatives tackle issues like tigers on meat?" He soberly looked me in the eye and said "That goes without saying."
I too have an active immigration-related request (sent earlier this month) in with his office. I'll follow up on it and publicize the reaction, to show whether it's (dis)similar to what the OP reports.

You're right it is very emotional. The process is a long and draining one. But I disagree that emotion is a bad thing in this process. Things aren't going to change until people get emotional enough to demand something change. To sit back and just take what they hand you when you're dealing with an inefficient system isn't something I'm capable of doing. I am active with local immigration groups; I will continue to write my representatives regarding the faults with the current system.
As far as processing times, I don't expect anything to be done until it's past them. I really am not looking for someone to push me to the front of the line. But they aim for a 5 month turn around and right now if we're going from October it's over 7 months. That's a bit ridiculous. There has to be a better solution to this broken system, but until enough people speak up about their experiences with it, it won't change.
I don't think you're attacking me at all. And even if my pursuits are fruitless I feel better utilizing my rights as a citizen to be active in my government and push for change.
Thanks for your insight, it's much appreciated!

I also understand your frustration and yes I agree with you they could have handled your call in a better way.
Its just like some operators are better at customer service over other and unfortunately the operator you got was not that great at customer service.
You are almost there hope your case would be approved soon.
