  1. Thank you all for the warm wishes, and congratulations to everyone in return who is nearing the end of this process!! I still can't believe how short it's been for so many of us - I had come to expect anything involving USCIS should take a year.

Also, apologies for being so late in posting my experiences. We literally had the citizenship ceremony from 8.30-10.30 last Thursday and then came home, got our bags and went to the airport (it was a pretty stressful day!) to go visit family in Colorado.

I fully agree with your experience @Going through, I was so incredibly disappointed by the oath ceremony in Brooklyn. I'm glad my husband and baby were at least allowed in the room towards the end (and didn't have to stay in the cafeteria the whole time, as we were expecting), so I could share the occasion with them. I won't go over everything that happened as @Going through gave a great account of our ceremony. All I'll add is that I couldn't believe how silent it was in the room. The atmosphere was like that of a funeral, or like we were going to be punished for something?!! I felt like a tentative schoolgirl even asking a staff member if I could go to the bathroom because it seemed like we couldn't leave the room - and actually, at one point towards the end of the ceremony we were basically told, "Yes, you can leave the room but if you're not here when the judge arrives, you won't get your citizenship, and we don't know when the judge will come." It honesty felt like we had been rounded up to be reprimanded for something.

I understand that the Queens/Brooklyn center does A LOT of these ceremonies - more than one a day I think - but that's no excuse for not even welcoming us at the beginning and explaining what will happen. And I had really been looking forward to hearing everyone's countries read out, but as @Going throughmentioned, it seems they forgot the list that day. The staff basically couldn't wait to get the ceremony over with, and didn't try to add any symbolism, joy, or acknowledgement of our journeys to the event. I was pretty surprised actually, as I feel like the US normally loves to go over the top with any patriotic occasion. How weird that there's more USA pride at sporting events than at some of the naturalization ceremonies! Heck, even when I went to Sea World and saw the orca show we all sang the national anthem and stood up to salute veterans!! So would it have been so difficult for the Brooklyn courthouse to have put on a CD with some patriotic tunes? Or for one person there to have something significant prepared to say? The judge literally said "I found out I was doing this this morning, so I Googled if anything important happened in history today." :o

Anyway, rant over. I'm happy I'm done with USCIS. I was excited to see @Going through and congratulate her. And I'm going to have a little party with friends in a couple of weeks, because at least it's important to them that I'm a citizen, even if the Brooklyn courthouse doesn't care. I'm also really thankful for this forum community - not just for the invaluable info, but because we all understand how hard this process is, and the support from everyone here over the last few years from K1 visa to Naturalization has kept me going when it's been tough. (L)

It seems more of a "hurry up and get through everyone" kind of thing in Brooklyn from what I've been reading.  I'm really hoping it's much more different than the info I can find/what the clerk said...my husband and daughter are still coming anyway, whether they have to wait in the cafeteria or not....just in case.  Maybe it all depends on the wishes of the presiding judge?

Ugh, this is so depressing. But thank you for the info. I saw one review where the person said it seemed like they only allowed guests in if it was a day where they weren't at capacity with participants. I guess there's just so many people to process that they can't fit the guests in normally...

Well, my family will come with me and we'll see if we can get more info when we're there. They can always come home without me if there's no point them waiting around. I'm going to bring a book to read! And hope to run into you again so we can at least congratulate each other!

Was told by the clerk that guests must remain in the cafeteria during the entire ceremony and are not allowed to enter the room to witness the ceremony itself.

Are you serious??! I can't believe this. I was expecting guests could be in the oath-taking room, but maybe seated in a different part. This is ridiculous.

I guess I should just tell my husband to stay home with the baby then... :( Seems silly for them to get up super early and travel all the way to the place just to sit in the cafeteria and *maybe* watch the proceedings on a screen...

My ceremony is on the same day as yours, too, btw.

Great! Maybe we'll bump into each other again!

Delta were really understanding about our flights and have allowed us to move it back 24 hours. I'm hoping that will be enough time? The oath ceremony is at 8.30am in Brooklyn and my flight is at 6pm out of La Guardia...

  6. 8 minutes ago, Going through said:

It can take a few months to get rescheduled for the Oath, but I've also heard of cases where the person was rescheduled a couple of weeks later.  If you can delay travel by even a few days and then do a same-day passport (which is available in NY if you have proof of travel), I would highly recommend it.

You went through everything smoothly and quickly----if you can, get it over and done with immigration-wise, imo.

Okay, I'm going to call the airline and see what the options are... This is making me so stressed!

Do I have to travel domestically on a US passport? Or could I use my UK one as I have been doing up until this point?

  7. 15 hours ago, Going through said:

Received my Oath Ceremony Letter in the mail yesterday :)

    Will take place in Brooklyn.

@vkhutchings did you get yours yet?

Yes, I received my letter, and I saw the date posted online prior to that too. I've kind of been in denial because they've scheduled it for October 19th, and I already have flights booked for the 18th-23rd to visit family in Colorado. Agh! (I honestly thought the N400 would take close to a year to complete and never dreamt this trip could interfere with the process!!)

I guess I have to send the letter back and re-schedule my ceremony, but it makes me super anxious for some reason. I'm wondering if I should change our trip plans instead... I have this fear that they won't re-schedule me for months if I say I can't attend. Have you seen any stories on here about this?

  8. Thanks everyone for your support. :D

I’ve finally had time to collect myself and write something! It’s really interesting to note the differences here—I was at the same office on the same day as @Going through but I filed under the 3 year rule instead of 5 years, and I had a different officer.

We arrived half an hour early for my 12pm appointment. Got through security easily, navigated the building, everything was signed really clearly. I thought it was a little odd that when we checked into the waiting area the guy there took my appointment letter? But it didn’t seem to matter. Then I sat in the waiting room with my husband and baby for a little while. I asked a man waiting if it seemed like the IO’s were behind with the interviews today—I had no idea at the time that the man I asked was actually goingthrough’s husband, ha ha.

Anyway, we were lucky, the IOs had been behind but they seemed to have caught up and I went in at 12.40—not long after goingthrough came out.

I had a pleasant Asian guy as my IO, and he acted like the whole thing was really perfunctory. We went into his office (cramped and cluttered and not anywhere near as fancy as I was imagining it would be). I swore to tell the truth and then sat down. He asked to see my green card and then he didn’t ask to see a single document after that. I brought every piece of evidence I could possibly imagine I needed, and he wasn’t interested in any of it!

He started by going through my application, but very swiftly. Wanted to know I still lived at the same address, and basically just wanted me to say yes to the information being accurate for each question. No questions about my relationship with my husband, no asking for evidence of the marriage or my many trips out of the States (only asked to verify that none of them was over 6 months, which they weren’t). We had some brief small talk about my son turning 9 months (he had seen him with me in the waiting room, which I kind of feel worked in my favour). Then he took the time to go through every single one of the Yes/No questions, and that was probably the longest part of the interview.

Then we did the English test, which took about 2 minutes. I wrote out an easy sentence (he didn’t seem to care that I wrote in cursive), then read an easy sentence, he marked the sheets with a big red check mark and we moved on to civics. I told him that I was nervous, and he joked that he wanted it to be over quickly too. He read them out from his computer and they were worded exactly like in the study booklet. Luckily I got all 6 questions right, phew. Then he told me we were almost done, I just needed to electronically sign a couple of things. And then we were finished—the whole thing took about 20 minutes. He handed me a sheet saying I had passed and he was recommending me for approval, and that it would take 30-60 days for my letter to arrive.

As he was escorting me out I was like— “But I brought all these documents!” I kind of wanted him to take a look at some of it because it had taken so long to gather. He smiled and said something like “What were you expecting? You don’t need all of that.” And I replied that I thought I was going to get a grilling, and he said that at this stage they’d already done all of that. It was kind of nice that he acknowledged that by now we’ve been through years of proving our relationship and loyalty to the country and so we didn’t need to again, but he also said something along the lines of, “But it’s on a case by case basis”. So I assume our case was pretty straightforward and that’s why they didn’t really need to see anything new to make their decision.

In short, I went in there expecting a really strict experience with an IO who was trying to catch me out (I thought it would be someone like the border enforcement people you get at the airport who are often so serious!). But the reality, for me at least, was it was just some friendly guy who wanted to get another interview over with.

I felt like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders when we left, and I couldn’t belief it was over so quickly. When I got home I had an email saying I had a case update, and although I can't see anything new yet on this site (https://my.uscis.gov/account/applicant), I have a message on My Case Status (https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/mycasestatus.do) saying "Oath Ceremony Notice Was Mailed". So happy and relieved, but also emotionally exhausted by the whole thing!!

Thanks! I looked over my whole application at the weekend and the last couple of tests of all the questions I got 100% so I don't know how else I can prepare! I'm going to be nervous as hell Wednesday morning though.

By the way, I was getting really hung up on the wording of the civics answers and found these Test Scoring Guidelines online which suggests they might be nice about it: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Office of Citizenship/Citizenship Resource Center Site/Publications/PDFs/Test_Scoring_Guidelines.pdf I'm still trying to learn the answers verbatim but it gave me peace of mind!

All the very best to @Going through and @vkhutchings for their interview next week!

Thank you!! Like @Going through the nerves have definitely set in here! I'm most worried about them being nit-picky about the wording of the civics answers, so I'm trying to learn them verbatim. I feel like I have every document possibly related to my entire life, so hopefully I'm prepared on that front...

Simple rule of thumb.... Bring a copy/original (if available) of EVERYTHING you submitted in the N400 packet PLUS anything they list on the interview letter PLUS anything else you can think of that will strengthen your case. Chances are nothing more than what's on the letter will be requested at the interview, but it's better ot be over-prepared than to be missing something.

Thanks! Yes, I've decided to take vastly more than I probably need, just to be on the safe side. I've just got done photocopying every page of my current and last passport so that I can show all of my entry and exit stamps for the past 5 years - overkill??! I'll obviously take the original passports too. I would assume they could make photocopies there of things if they need to? But, again, playing it safe!

Didn't you get a letter saying what to bring to the interview? I took a folder with those few items (originals of a few things submitted) and my interviewer said "nope, don't need to see any of that". It could be way easier than you are thinking.

Yes, the letter says to bring originals of every document submitted with the application.

Here's a photo, in case it's helpful for people getting their docs together:

Seriously....VJ should start little in-person support group meetings....lol

We'd all be able to compare notes.

Ha! Right? I don't know how anyone goes through this process without VJ. I feel like USCIS turns you into a crazy person over the years, and VJ is the only way I've retained any sanity.

  14. Thanks, @Going through! That's all reassuring. I'm sitting here in the midst of a sprawl of documents trying to get my folder ready and feel super paranoid that I'm going to miss some detail that will cause me to fail the interview.

Also, I've travelled overseas quite a bit, but never for more than a month at a time, and my total number of days is okay (I *think*... because they don't separate out 3 year and 5 year filers online, they included my 2 years of days in the UK before I moved to the US as part of my time overseas, which seems silly). Do I need to make photocopies of all of the entry and exit stamps in my passport, or will showing them my passport pages on the day be enough?

  15. Hi guys, a couple of questions relating to docs and evidence to take to the interview.

Firstly, I'm a bit panicked because despite checking my application thoroughly before submitting online, I've just been getting all of the documents together in a file and double-checking they match up with the answers I gave on the N400, and I have a rental agreement showing I moved to my current apartment on 2/11/2016, but for some bizarre reason I put 2/15/2016 on the form. Is that terrible? Should I try and find a way of correcting it now, or should I just wait until the interview when I go through the N400 with the officer? I feel so stupid, I don't even know how I managed to put the wrong date...

Also, I have my rental agreements since I moved to the States as evidence of where I've lived, what dates, and that I've been cohabiting with my husband (I applied under the 3 year rule). Should I have any evidence to back up the addresses I lived at overseas prior to moving over here? I'm guessing they won't be too interested in evidence for that as it's kind of irrelevant to my citizenship, but of course I had to add it to the form because online they ask for 5 years of addresses.

    Thank you!

@vkhutchings since we are so close in timeline since biometrics---I wonder if we will end up getting the same oath ceremony date too.  If we do, I would love to actually meet you.

Absolutely! I wonder how many people's timelines on here have ever matched up like this? I would imagine that if we both get approved on the interview day they probably would schedule us for the same ceremony.

How common is it, by the way, to have to wait until after the interview to receive approval? (If more docs are needed or if another officer has to look over the evidence, for example.) I'm wondering whether I should be expecting approval on the day, or whether it's actually more normal to have to wait.

  17. Received my letter today! Updating the tracker:
