SouthernComfort reacted to luckytxn in This (illegal) American life
You are right that U.S. laws are restricting but the problem as I saw it when I was overseas and witnessed it was that the Asian countries have a huge racist problem. It is all and good when the child was born of Asian blood from both parents but to deny a kid being a citizen and to be part of the social system of that country because of no fault of their own they have blood of a white or black in them is bad. Most of the kids in that orphanage had a mother but she abandoned that kid so that she can at least have a life. She was being ostracized because of the kid so she abandoned the kid and moved to a town that didn't know she had a mixed blood kid.
What is the U.S. to do when every mixed blood Asian in the world says they are the kids of an American and want citizenship? Just take them at their word that the father was American and admit them? It is more complex than this. The father would need to step up to the plate and be very proactive and get a DNA test done to verify and then start the process to get them recognized and a visa and citizenship. We all know that back when I was talking about this and found out about this happening that DNA tests had not been invented yet. Over half the kids were the kids of mothers that were prostitutes. The mothers had no idea really who the father was. Many were the result of a union of a mother who thought the father was going to marry them and promised to do so. The father would tell them that he is doing the paperwork for them and may have even married them in that country. Of course many times it was a lie and she would find out that the husband was gone and rotated back. Seen that play many times.
I have tried to figure out what the U.S. could do more of but I am stymied. There is a lot of issues here that the U.S. has no business butting their noses into. Of course the mothers should be more wise and use protection and even wait to have kids until on American soil. The men need to stop playing a game where they are affecting lives so horribly. The Asian countries need to realize these kids are not at fault and bring them into the social fabric. When the kids grow up and what they have to do to survive is heart breaking.

Nope. Outright racism. It was not just clear once I said it to him and he confirmed it - but I was stunned that after knowing him for over 20 years I had no clue. So we had an extended and loud exchange about it. I found it incredible someone could actually believe the words coming out of his mouth. He didn't believe me in return. Can you believe the gall of someone telling you what your own mind is thinking? I took an inferior race because I "gave up".
He felt he didn't need to say she wasn't white. Because obviously I was a racist too and wouldn't actually choose to marry "one of them" over "one of us". You hear about racists and see the White Power loonies on TV, but this guy was off his rocker way more than I could fathom for having known him so long.
He has completely dropped his racism over asians, and he's deciding now whether to live in Thailand or the Philippines. He's big into scuba and Thailand has a better scuba scene, but that's what he was doing in Cebu. Off to Palawan next year. He called me the first day landing in Asia and said I was right, he was wrong, and thanked me. Been thanking me ever since.
I guess people build up in their minds this huge stupid house of cards in their minds with racism. All he needed to do was meet one and *poof* all that insanity evaporated.

She's never had any directed towards her in person. People say she's beautiful, so they cut her some slack. Especially the guys. But online it can be a convenient weapon for malicious people to use for an attack.
Before she came I had someone tell me I had "given up" by marrying my wife. I was baffled because he wouldn't say it directly and I didn't understand. I kept pressing him : what do you mean "giving up"? I traveled all over the world an married the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. He got me so frustrated by not saying what he meant that I got angy - and then it dawned on me. He was a racist! But too much of a coward to say it. I went from being angry to laughing my butt off at the guy for being such an idiot.
But he absolutely would not accept that I could love an Asian. I would only marry one because I "gave up". Until he met her. So he went to the Philippines himself now, just back from Cebu. I guess he gave up.

What you are describing has a name: xenophobia; and it is not an exclusivity of US people. Happens everywhere and you are bound to run into it sooner or later (not just in the US but everywhere), even in your/his own country!! Wait a few years and you will witness how he would be treated in similar terms by his own con-nationals in his own country. Has happened to me (I'm USC by naturalization) and it happens every time I visit.

Never had issues with the way I talk. On the contrary, many people in our area speak with a funny American accent and use strange words. I try to correct them all the time ("Repeat with me: Lorry. Not Truck. Lorry"), but hey, they are stubborn.
