Hello everyone from the U.S! I just arrived here yesterday to visit for Thanksgiving! His coworkers put on a big get together...mmm deep fried turkey! Can't wait! Anyways, he PROPOSED! The rings are beautiful, WAY more than I ever asked for! Which leads me to a question, I still work and reside in Canada and will be travelling back on Sunday. Do I have to declare and pay duty on the rings when I go back? He has the appraisal paperwork, and hopefully the receipt! But here's the thing the value and what he paid for the bridal set are two different numbers because the diamond was a gift from his mother. Anyways, hope someone has an answer or pleasepoint me in the right direction! Thank you! :D

In my opinion you do not have to pay any duty for your ring. It is the personal thing that was a gift. Moreover how will they know that you didn't have this ring on your finger while coming to the US? Correct me people if I am wrong, but I think this is crazy to pay duty for the engagement ring you got from your fiance. :jest:

Anyways, congratulations on your engagement!!! :D:) Happy for you!!!

Thank you!

Yes it was a gift! I don't want to pay duty, but i don't want to run into problems later on! I feel like if its a gift, plus I plan on returning to US permanently with the rings, why does one have to pay the duty.

My theory (in the same situation) was that as you are supposed to hand the engagement ring back if the relationship ends, it is never really my ring - it always belongs to my husband and he is American and it was bought in America and will end up there when I live over there. It's not as though you are importing it to another country permanently.

Exactly, ur soon to be husband now OWNS YOU!! so ur good to go!! lol I wouldn't worry about it

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

No, you do not have to declare them if they are not to be sold once you enter Canada.

Congrats......
