Mayweather Vs. Hatten

The whole booing during National Anthems is very distasteful IMO....it is very different from booing rival teams etc. I remember going to watch the England Wales rugby match in our local pub and all the English booing while the Welsh anthem played....and I was pissed off. Maybe it's to do with lack of national pride in one's own country when they do something like that.

Is it true that the Brits were booing during the Star Spangled Banner?

Wouldn't be surprising.

Europeans are pro-American only when America isn't confident and assertive. IOW when America is as pusillanimous as Europe is.

 Heavy on the "pusi".

I guess I was making two sort of related but admittedly muddled comments.

I think that U.S. competitors--teams or individuals (regardless of how competent they may be)--are often perceived as the giant to be knocked to its knees, much like the big teams of domestic and international sports. Besides, it's been "cool" to be anti-U.S. for a few years now. I don't imagine that the people booing during the U.S. national anthem or those who chanted "Osama!" during the U.S.-Mexico soccer game have a deep-seated hatred for all things American. For some, it's the thing to do; they consider deliberately shocking behavior, like making references to political figures, wars, or atrocities, as part of the experience. Not terribly sophisticated, but there you go.

It seems a shame that people's allegiances would shift so quickly from Hatton to Mayweather because of a bunch of yobs at the match. That's mindless in itself, but I understand the tendency to do so. This is sort of a tangent, but I went to a couple of Red Sox-Diamondbacks interleague games in Phoenix this past summer. I'm a Boston-area native and lifelong Sox fan, but I found myself rooting for the home team because there were so many obnoxious Sox fans who needed a knuckle sandwich.

Ah, sports fanaticism--it brings out the irrational animal in all of us! :)

I thought Hatten was getting the shaft from Joe Cortez
