Do you talk/write in the accent of your SO?

Ok, I am interested in this topic although I expect I am in a minority on this one.

I don't speak like my SO. I believe that's because I was an adult at the time I came over. However, my son quickly adopted the US accent to 'fit in' at school.

If you do accidentally (or deliberately) copy your SO's accent, does it embaress you or do you like it?

Do you find yourself IMing with the same accent?

Accents are cute in my opinion but sometimes (the Madonna one has been pointed out) it seems false if it appears you are deliberately assuming an accent.

I think a lot of it has to do with the mimetic ability of the language learner. Some folks pick up accents as they go along, some remain with their usual accent for as long as they live.

I still have a Brit accent after 2yrs. I use Brit slang around my wife, tho she says there's less of it now. I use US words for clarity, but hear them gratingly in my head, as if it's false. I don't know whether I write in Brit - accept for the added 'u's - but maybe someone else will tell me if I do.

im an irish/scotish/british mexican... so i say bollocks, bloody, achhh, oi, colour, favourit, and such and such.. of course with a latino accent..

I've picked up lots of slang from Javi. I only say them around him though. I would never use them on an immigration forum or any other website. I have used some spanish words on here but mostly in jest or when talking to spanish speakers. I don't use them while IM'ing either except when I'm talking to Pedro. That's only because he understands what I'm saying. It's kinda wannabe-ish to me if you use them constantly. I also find the few times that I have slipped and said something in spanish to my closest friends they look at me like I'm crazy. So I just don't do it.

Edited to say: I have a very southern accent and Javi has picked that up. I always say it's hilarious to hear him speak in his spanish-southern accent.

No, I don't talk in his accent or he in mine.... only the ocassional phrase in an exaggerated version of AN English or American accent, realizing there are several of both. We also occasionally say those words that crack us up that each of us say....

We interchange words from each others "language"....heheh... Brit/American English.

Are some accents more 'mimicable' than others? It seems to me there are. However, I am not sure that it's just down to one's ability to mimic. I have lived in several regions that have strong accents, but I didn't pick up these accents, however, I can speak French with a French accent.

I dooooo that with Javi too. He says some words really funny. I either repeat them or ask him to repeat them. He gets aggravated at me when I ask him to repeat them because he thinks I'm making fun of him. I'm really not. I just think it's so cute how he pronounces some words.

I have lived and traveled in many countries and parts of the US and like my name('Pattu' means parrot in Nepali) I just end up mimicking the accents and speech patterns of people I am with. It's not a conscious thing, it just happens.

When I am in person or IMing with Govi or my other Nepali friends I definitely am speaking Neplish - I even have the neck wobble thing down cold...

It is a bit embarrassing since I have worked as an English teacher.

It also has to do with where you learned the language, and, important too, who taught you. My English sounds "bloody brilliant".... my French sounds south-France, my Italian sounds like bad old latin. Bren's German sounds like English, and his Spanish sounds very South American... it's all a Babel of Love.
