#######? Because of the car v. man speed issue, it seems there's more to the story (i.e. these guys know the firefighter and beat him up for something other than being white but said hateful things while doing so?). This just doesn't add up, although obviously these guys are pretty nasty people.

Isn't a given that anyone who is reasonably sane would consider stabbing someone terrible? It just seems silly if we all respond to these stories like lab rats, "Oh my God! Those sick bastards!" Of course what they did was bad...of course we all find it outrageous, but what's the whole story....at least that's what arouses my curiosity.

There's a fire station right in the same neighborhood as where that restaurant is.

Me too. I find this kind of journalism, which doesn't provide the whole story and chooses publishing something sensational, to be a) despicable and b ) a sign of the decaying state of the newspaper.

How do we know this unidentified firefighter is telling the truth other than he got stabbed? I find this story highly suspicious.

I don't think its all that suspicious - considering that we're basing these judgements on a second hand account. The guy involved isn't quoted at all.

Also, if the police aren't classifying it as "racially fueled" there's got to be more to the story. Because if they think these guys stabbed the firefighter just for coming into their restaurant, that would obviously be a hate crime.

Hmmm... now let's see how long for this one to flare up [the thread].

Hmmm, sounds to me like a mild response to the Hispanics label being floated around town that they are the

brown boogie man, illegals and criminals. Ummm sure sounds like it. I might be wrong.

come again?

Not to be rude, or anything like that....but like I said I might be wrong. What is your opinion? I see that you seem to

misunderstand what I wrote.

Or perhaps this calls for the thought police to come in.

I'm asking you to clarify what you said.

Just clarify what you do not understand. If you can tell me that you have not heard the terms that i wrote above with

respect to the usual suspects "illegals, bla bla bla", then I will clarify specially for you.

I didn't understand what you wrote either.

I am fu**ng overwhelmed with the lack of knowledge to what goes on against the immigration bullsh***t. I myself am

mystifiied and surprised to see that incident occur. The first thought that came to mind was payback time. It could have

been you. That fireman was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time when some latinos were probably stoned and the

presence of a white man just snapped them into rage from so much bullsh**t they hear daily from Dobbs, and the

Republican Bush Junta. But like I said earlier, I might be wrong....This is the last statement from me to this thread. FIRE

AWAY!!!

Yes. As a reader, I'm frustrated because they leave out information that I should know...there's a lot of journalistic presumption placed on the readers...it's like, just trust me with what I'm about to tell you. I hate that.

Well, I don't know if there is anymore information to be known at this point. Just because they're saying that the incident wasn't racially motivated at this point doesn't mean that they won't determine that to be true in the future.

I am anti-illegal, and from the discussions I've had both on the boards and off, the only people who ever use those terms are ones who don't agree with me, and are using them as accusations when I've never said them.

I don't understand your whole original post, so if you could just explain what you meant, that'd be great.

But the story paints a certain picture of the events, especially if you look at the lede (first paragraph) you can see a certain tone is being set. It's a pat-sounding story.

Without reading it closely again, it seemed that it was written to say that 6 Hispanics attacked the fireman. If he is the only witness, then it should be stated that the victim claims that 6 men stabbed him and he believed them to be Hispanic.

I guess I just don't find his account of the events to be suspicious. And it doesn't read differently to me than any other news story. They did put the word "allegedly" in there. ;)

I seriously still don't understand what you're getting at here...but at the same time, I think you're stereotyping wayyyy too much.

'payback time' = reading that makes me sick

It's probably just from working in journalism, and now the degree in it which forces us to really analyze these things. School has warped my brain!

What's suspicious to me is that the story doesn't leave room for other motivations or a more complex motive for the men who committed the crime. There are a lot of ways to write taht better.

eta: what bothers Steven doesn't actually really bother me.
