Disclosure: I learnt nothing about the Civil War at my UK school.

Nothing at all about the civil war that occured around 1776? :)

At my school? No. We were taught English history from Henry VII to Charles I, and European history.

Apparently then no important British history since 1625 then....

Wasn't in the curriculum. What can I say. I can give you the address of my school if you really want to tell them off... ;)

Perhaps you should then look up the Civil War and get an idea.

At some point I probably will. If only to help with my kid's homework.

Is it some kind of secret?

Not a secret at all. It is the history of a war sparked by the very thing you are contemplating in your statements.....the splitting of the US.

YMMV

Jesus, I hated being picked on by the teacher for these types of questions too.

Totally unfamiliar: no. Detailed analysis of said events would be lacking tho, sir. I will rectify this beofre my citizenship exam, tho.

Yes, they have centuries worth of faggoty little kings wearing dresses talking in high pitched feminine voices.

That's pretty much what I got from History classes.

But the war that I am referring to involved the country of your current citizenship.... Or are you missing a very important piece of information?

No, I don't think so. But the UK won't ask me questions about it when I reapply for my passport.

It's entirely possible that the 'United States' will split into different nations. Some may welcome this, some may not. The US is an extraordinarily large area to attempt to unify, and to continue to do so for some feeling of tradition may seem quaint and old-fashioned in the future.

Have we then learned nothing from the Civil War?

If certain areas of the country decided that they wanted to become independent, for whatever reason, what would be the arguments against it?

Sovereignty and independence are becoming more concept than reality in the global scheme of things. Just with California, for example - I believe close to a third of all agriculture in the world is produced in the state of California! CA also sells a lot of it's electricity to other states. There is great interdependency, not just among the states, but across the globe. Some people, like Pat, fear the inevitable.
