Economy being bad. When US's economy drops a little, Puerto Rico's sink, since we're a colony and very dependent on US's money. Puerto Rico is the first to suffer as companies are afraid US will stop sending money to Puerto Rico, and with the economy going stale, nobody invests here.

Also, companies are moving to Panama, Dominican Republic, and countries in south america in search of cheaper work force.

Interesting. I had no idea. Thanks for sharing!

I can certainly relate to that. I am working on a project that, if successful, will allow about 200 software programming positions to be performed from any location in the world.

200 people are going to lose their jobs in the next few months and they don't even know yet.

:( I hope there will be something that Puerto Rico can do to keep its local economy afloat. I used to date a woman who's parents were both from PR and she has a lot of family there.

Not personally. But my best friend is in HR for an insurance company up in NJ and had to let a couple people go on Wednesday due to financial contraints. And Derek has a friend that works for Chevy Chase Bank who said that they were going to start doing major lay-offs (300+) before the holidays. Merry Effin' Christmas.

Insurance and banking are going to be hit hard. I'm in the insurance world myself, have been for close to a decade now. I'm eager to see how this plays out.
