It is silly, and more so when it appear to be being used for petty point-scoring. I don't see the need to change the way I choose to post especially when its wrapped around a condescending attitude and silly dictionary definitions of "big" words (a polite request for clarification would be another matter).

Obfuscation? What's wrong with "confusing".

Sorry for my vocabulary ... the word is posted ... please feel free to google.

Googling to find the meaning of a word is much easier than searching though pages of posts ... oh btw ... open a new window before googling

I think that's called a significant minority. It is interesting although I wonder if some people are thinking in terms of 'suspected woman beater'? Although, even then. Dev provided me a very interesting link pertaining to the origins of the U visa, and it's very much part of a concerted effort to protect immigrant women who are victims of violence.

Edited to add immigrant.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

It certainly could be - I dare say there's more to the opinions of the people who responded that way than can be assumed merely from that vote response. The poll is deliberately polarised after all.

I must admit I'm not all that familiar with the "U" Visa, but I thought there was something in the guides or the visa forums somewhere about how to deal with abusive spouses. I think there have actually been cases of that on VJ, where an abused spouse breaks up from the SO before the 2 year conditional status is up, and is still able to get the 10 year LPR status from an immigration judge, even though the relationship which provided the grounds for the original application is over.

Totally O/T I had one lecturer at uni who insisted on filling her lectures with archaic words that weren't in common circulation. She confused an entire class in a seminar by repeatedly using the word "Parsimonious". Her words might have made her sound more credible, but they sure got in the way of learning the material. We all had a good laugh in the student bar when someone actually looked up what it mean't...

Ok, sorry to hijack the thread, but this made me laugh. I was team teaching one time and teasing my colleague and used the word "behoove." Now I can't stop using that damn word. There are hordes of teenagers out there using that word now because of me. Oops.

It seems that we, as a country, have many problems that could use this kind of attention. I know that illegal immigrants are breaking the law, but I suppose I don't see that as awful as, say murder.

I guess I just don't understand why everyone gets so up in arms about this. I mean we seem to disintegrate into name calling and not-very-thinly-veiled barbs.

It isn't as bad as murder. One at a time it isn't bad for anyone. But when multiplied by 20 million then it becomes a real big problem that must be addressed. Just giving up and letting them stay isn't dealing with it either, it's surrendering. It also will just encorage more to come in just like the 86 amnesty did. I am all for immigration, just do it legally and don't throw your arms up and say "Oh well, there here. Might as well let them stay". Thats just taking the easy way out.

I totally understand this view and I don't disagree, necessarily. I just wonder that we (as a country) don't put more energy into the other areas that need fixing too. Of course, this is a family immigration site, so I understand the heightened feelings here.

My objection isn't about the issue, rather about the fact that some people get so angry and begin to act like savages over this issue. It's insane sometimes.

Considering it was the basis of the other thread (that you participated in) I find that disturbing, altho amusing.

Cliff Note version: The U visa is for illegals. ;)

so because someone prefers to live their life then to be worried about illegal immigration , they are selfish and self-serving??

and turn a blind eye.

So ... is it selfish or self serving ?

selfish to turn a blind eye to law breakers. Sometimes I hear they call it abetting, dontcha know?! ;)
