A cover letter is not necessary. I did not use one for myself or for my daughter's AOS. We were both approved without any problem. Many many others here on VJ did not use one either.

Just attach all the necessary documents to the I-485.

Good luck for a speedy approval.

I just followed the recommendation here on JV:

Cover Letter. Should include a description of what your are petitioning for (I-485), a table of contents (list everything in the packet). If you need additional room to explain your case, attach a separate sheet (list the attachment on the cover sheet). Make sure to sign and date the cover sheet.

Great example. I used a cover letter because I am paranoid and like to be organized. I think it may have helped a little.

Me too. I always use cover letters for everything and sometimes it is more for my own record, but also to ensure that I can back up my claim of sending something should it be questioned in any way.

Mine is slightly different from Jen's above... I kind of did it "all in one" and it worked ok for me.

lisakopavi,

fee increase happened July 30 '07. Both sample cover letters are dated before that, thus the difference from how much you will pay now. Unfortynate, but that's what it is now :(

JenT and I paid the same fee - only she did separate checks for each appl and I did one for all three. But as you can see it worked for both of us. I guess it comes down to what you find easier to do! Some people advise separate payment and 3 sets of photos (x2). I sent 2 photos ONLY and it was enough.

I also arranged my package in exact order I listed in cover letter. Got an RFE for I-485 (incomplete tax info, forgot to send W-2s) but check was still cashed straight away and all 3 NOA1s had the same date.

Good luck and speedy approval to you!
